The sun rose eclipsed on the east coast of Africa. At the chief station of the British expeditionary observers at Ceylon there will proba- bly be @ time of totality of about 2 min. 25 sec., the duration of the total phase varying at places aiong the central line from 1 min. 55 sec. to 4 min. 22 sec. The expedition is under Mr. J. Norman Lockyer, With whom 1s associated Mr. R. Abbay, of Wadham College, Oxford; Captain Maclear, of the Royal Naval Coneee, at Portsmouth; Mr. H. N. Moseley, of the College of Chemistry, and four or five other observers. Professor Respighi, of Rome, ac- companies it, and vr. Jansen wil! join at the observ- ing station. it leit England on the z6th of October, the Peninsular and Oriental Company's steamer irzapore, taking out cluefly spectroscopic appara- tus of unusual power and perfection. The principal instrument to be used in observing will be a stlverea glass refecting telescope, nine and @ bali inches in diameter, by Browning, lent lor the purpos’ committee of the Royal Astronomical Sucie' most novel and important insiruments special occasion are two spectrose @ large framework of gua meial, for tus 3 attached to which revolves by means of rings on the body of the above telescope. One oi these has a very low dispersive power with @ large field; the other a very high dispersive power produced by several prisms. Either of these spectioscopes may at will be brought to vear on the sun’s umage, which 1s formed at the side of the telescope tune. Tne plan of operations will provably be somewhat as fol- lows:—A map Of the svlar prominences will be made by means of the highly dispersive spectro- scope previous to the total pnase. Tuese observa. tions will be continued until a few minutes previous 1 wotality. Just before the commencement of the total } denen the low power dispersive spectroscope will be rought to bear upon the corona, the chiel interest centring in the results which we hope will be thas | obtained, the purport of these observations being to determine the physical constitution of the coron& Working by the method of coincidences the ihines in the spectra will ve noted and compared with the lines 1m spectra artificially produced from tubes contain- hydrogen gas at various low pressures or degrees of attenuation. The spectrum ol the corona observed during previous eclipses appears to con- sist of a single green line, apparently coinciding with @ well-known line in the spectrum of iron. us green kine has also been observed in the spectra of the Aurora, of the Zodiacal light, and also in thatof lightnigg. Polariscopic observations wiil also be taken, but unfortunately are not likely to prove of much service, as such results have hitherto been always capable of various interpretations. In all solar eclipses Which have occurred during the past twenty years such observations have been Made, but 1n lo case have any indisputable conclu- sions been arrived at. The government have con- tributed £2,000, at the request of tne British Assocta- tion, towards the expenses of the expedition; all the apparatus having had to be conveyed to its destina: jon on ve ordinary means of transit. y, Who has lent the government ex- pation: numerous valuatiie instruments, nas also seut, at his own expense, an observer to take photographs of the eclipse, and it 1s considered that these May prove the most interesting Of all the data obtained in the present researches. There whl also be an Australian party at the Gulf of Carpen- een the promo'ion of whose Observations 1s due Russell, the Government Astronomer at Bpane; intel ice Of & brief and rudimentary character may be telegraphed to this country in the course of a few days; but itis not likely any important ad. ditions to our present state of knowledge will be made until the return of the observers themselves; and, indeed, it is questionable if any real scientific conclusions can be drawn without long and caretul discussions of the data obtained, Detailed Accounts of Observers, The following telegram has been received from the Governor of Ceylon to the Earl of Kimberley, dated Colombo, December 12, 10:45 A. M. A telegram from Jaffna states splendid weather during eclipse. Most satisfactory and interesting observations have been made. The Astronomer Royal has sent the following copy of a telegram receivea from Mr. Pogson, Gov- ernment Astronomer at Madras, giving the results of his observations of the eciinse:— From Mr.N. R. Pogton, at Avenasny, to the Astronomer Royal, Royal Observatory, Greenwich :— Weatler fine. Teiescopic and camera photographs succeas- fal; ditto polarisation. Goodakeiches. POISONED BY ACONITE, ‘An inquest was held at Morrisania, Westchester county, yesterday by Coroner Bathgate touching the somewhat mysterious death of a German woman named Anna Epert, the particniars of which ap- peared in the H#RALD of yesterday. A post-mortem examination of) the remains tended to show that deceased had died from the effects of some violent vegetable poisok. The empty vial found in the dead woman’s apartment was fully recognized by tne cee who had sold it to her husband some months previouily; the witness also tesrifying that 1t had containel’ one ounce of tincture of aconite, zoe Prescription was intended to ve vsed externally invcases of rhebmatism. The Defunct Brooklyn Market—Deciston by Judge Benedict—Sale of Encambered Pro- perty by an Assignee in Mankruptcy. AnD application was made on behalf of tne assignee in bankruptcy of Ernest Sacchi for an order author- izing the sale of the Brooklyn market property, aub- ject only to @ first mortgage. Yesterday Judge Benedict rendered the following decision in the UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT—IN BANKRUPTCY. Copartnership Liabilities—Adjudication of Bankruptcy Denied, Before Judge Blatchiord, In the Matter of the Petition of James H. Warner and Others, £Yesterday Judge Blacchford rendered ms decision in this case, His Honor says it is very clear on the evidence that there ought not to be any adjudication against Anuerson, Willets or Abrams, Jor the following reasons:— First—That the peuiioning creditor was never a creditor to Anderson, Wiilets and Abrams, other- Wise than rr such lability on their part as could arise out of the checks given him, which were signed in the name of Warner, McKirath & Co, by Anuerson. Second—These checks, in view of the evidence, do not establish that there was any copartuership called Warner, Dickson, McElrath & Co., of which Anderson, Willets and ‘Abrams were members, or either of them was a member, They were merely drawn agatust moneys which, if on deposit to meet them, would have been so on deposit as the specific proceeds of sales of peaches, and would bave been Geposited to the credit of an account which had been opened in the name of Warner, Dickson, McElrath & Co., a8 representing such proceeds, to keep them separate from moneys on deposit in the same bank to the credit of an account which had been opened in the name of Warner, Dickson, McElrath & Co. Third—Then the written sqreomeas between the two firms, Warner, Dickson & McElrath, and Ander- son & Co,, in their firm name, did not’ constitute a lng agen > between the six members of the two rms in respect to the peaca business, so as to make the members of the firm of Anderson & Co. liable to the petitioning creditor on any of the indepted- ness set forth in the petition. Fourth—Itis not established Anat any: such part- nership, created in any manner, exis ‘The petition is dismissed, with costs, UNITED STATES COMMISSIONERS’ COURT. Charge of Counterfeiting. Before Commissioner Shields, The United States vs. Pacrick Kelly.—The defend- anthas been in prison for some time back on @ charge of naving carried on the sale of counterfeit money. He was yesterday admitted to bail in the sum Of $10,000, to take lis trial in the ensuing term of tne Circuit Court on the accusation in question, It wil be remembered that shortly after Kelly was arrested a statement was put in circulation to the effect that he had atiempted to cut his throat with a knife or razor, ana that he bad lost @ considerable case:— Tam of the opinion that under the Mrs: section of the Bankruptcy act the Bankrupt Court acquires jurisdiction to order a sale of encumbered property of the bankrupt free from the encumbrances, which encumbrances will be thereby transferred to the Proceeds of the sale. 1 am further or the opinion that upon the facts, so far as they have been made to appear in support of this petition, it will be for the interest of the estate to sell the real estate referred to, subject to the first mortgage, and iree from all other itens or encumbrances. Whether the relief in question can be granted on a petition in the Bankruptcy Court or should be prayed for by @ bill in equity it is not necessary now to decide. SUPREME COURT—SPECIAL TERM.
