Gossip anuge—What Cashier Hill Says— Tue Ninth National Holds Only $30,000 of It. ‘The particulars given exclusively in yesterday's HERALD Of the discovery in tie Ninth National Bapk of a large amount of forged commercial paper | were in the main correct, Yesterday a visit was paid to Mr. John T. Hill, the cashier of the institution, who stated that the bank had received but $30,000 of it, instead of $40,000, as reported on the street, From his statement it appears that the paper is a part of that forged some weeks ago by a man named Saroni, of the firm of Saroni & Lindeman. ‘This firm, Mr. Hill sags, dave been doing business with the Ninth National for about aix years, and in the course of business deposited these forged notes in Mr, Hill’s bank, Mr. Saroni has since taken os departure from tle city; but the forgeries were not detected nor known to his partner, Mr, Lindeman, until some days after. Mr. Hill asserts that the baak will lose nothing py the transaction, as the firm from which the vog notes were received are responsible to the Ninti Natlonal for the money advanced. While they hav! $30,000 of these notes, the cashier believes that all of them ate not forgeries; but he is unable to say how many are 00d, a8 @ large portion of them have not yet matured. The subject of the Torgeries was fully canvassed | on ’Change yesierday, and it is ee dd that rnleh banks hold some of the paper. ‘ory, whic! could not be traced to an uncial-s source, put the amount in which the Ninth National Bank ts a loser as high as $140,000; but Mr. Hill's statement sets this at reat. A STEAMSHIP IN THE MUD, The Cunard steamship Cuba, Captain Moodie, left this port on Wednesday for Liverpool with a large complement of passengers. While passing out near Sandy Hook, in the afternoon, she grounded on the shoals known as the Knolls and came to a atop. The news reached the city, and, being some- what magnified in transmission, the Coast Wreck- ing Company despatched a steamer to tle assist- ance of the Cunarder, the captain of which, how- ever, declined assistance, preferring to wait for the friendly offices of the tide. Yesterday morning she floated off and immediavely proceeded to sea, as she had sustained no damage. The oficers of the company attripate the accident to the prevalence of a strong easterly wind that shifted the buoys from their proper position. The Coast Wrecking Com- pany and its agent, Captain Merritt, who not only sent down the steamer but followed up assistance in the form of four steamtugs, feel very indignant at the refusal of assistance so timely rendered, Jt 4s said that the captain of the Cuba uctually refased Captain Merritt the empty courtesy of a line to make fast tothe steamship. In consequence the Wrecking Company express a determination to hereatter tender no assistance to vesscls of the line unleas called upon to do so. On board the vessel when she stranded there was quite a commotion among the passengers; but the assurances of the officers that no danger need be apprehended quieted their fears, and they retired to rest, anxious atthe delay, but confident of the ability of the vessel to weather any storm that might be gotten up on the waters of the bay to rock them to slumber.
