No Changes in the Sitsatio — Motion fer Re- duction of Bail to be Made To-Day. “Nothing new to-day” .tas become the stereo- typed answer to parties inquiring at Ludlow Strect Jail sor information in regard to the progress of the prisoner of State—ex-Comptrojier Connolly. Day follows day, crowds of friends and sympathisers ¢all on the Jate financier of the county, and there, seated In the Foom watching every movement and listea- im to every word, sits a special deputy from the Sherif’s office. Mr. Connelly looks quite cheerful, and bears the imprisonment with all possible ease and sang Jfroid—even the pres- ence of a Sheriffs officer in the room. This ac- tion Is entireiy unprecedented, and, whatever may be 118 latent, itis certamly adding insult to injury to treat him as A CONDEMNED CRIMINAT. The only cases in which deputies of the Sheriff remain in strict charge of their prisoner’s body by day and night, is when they have been sentenced to capita! punishment. But why there should be regu- lar changes of watches by extra deputies in the case of Mr. Connolly 18 certainiy rather curious, Itis more than ordinarily curious, inasmuch as there 1s a competent Warden, with a fall force of aseistauts und all the necessary rapherralia of bars and bolts and iron doors and eavy gratings on the windows which bave been considered bitherto safe enough to keep confined most desperate murderers, pirates, counterfeiters and criminals of all sorts. During the day Mr. Logan, of 12th of July fame, Was on duty, and was relieved by Mr. Keyes. The latter gen-leman secins to know his place as 3 man, ind while performing his duty dues not intrude on the privacy of the prisoner. Yesterday afternoon the counsel of Mr. Connolly— Messrs. McKeon, Beach, Andrews Courtenay— were closeted With lum several hours, and started last night lor aluany, where a motion for reduction of bail will be made to-day. No new names were received yesterday on the bond, but should tne mo- ton for a reduction of bail be dented the counsel, it 4s said, will advise the acceptance of boudsmen' in Bums Of from $10,000 to $50,000, BEDFORD'S BOMSSHELLS, The Manicipal Frauds ‘Agate the Subject of Jadicial Comment—Juige Bedford Dire charges the Graud Jury Summoned for the December Te Ammediately on the opening of the General Ses- sions yesterday Judge Bediord took mis sent on tne bench, when the Grand Jury sum- moned for the December term were called and answered to their names. For a short time past there bas been floating abont in Liv- erpool commercial circles a rumored intention ot amalgama- tion between an extevsive Liverpool steam shipping com- pany and one located in Glasgow. Recently this rumor re- ceived additional currency and some credence by the more pointed assertion that terms of amalgamation bave been ar- ranged for cunjoiping the Montreal Ovean Steamship Com- pany with the Anchor line of Glasgow North American steamabips. It is further stated that a meeting of the neads of the two firms named took place in Glasgow on the 16tb ult for arranging terms of the proposed amalgamation. This arrangement, it is said, is with @ view to get rid of tbreatened opposition of a steam lino from Barrow-tn-Fur- ness, Marine Disasters.
