12 ~ CALVARY CEMETERY. Camplaints Still the Order of the Day, and No Denial of the Charges from the Cemetery Managers—What Catholics Have to Say About the Matter. Tt would seem, Judging from the compiaints that @oatinue to be made as to tie misinanagement of Cemetery, that those who have it in their season ob the abuses complained of have Bot as yet seen Mit ro do their duty, There are many ‘who contend that to expose the abuses wiil only serve to make the parties at fauli all the more per- mstent in thelr mismanagement, tf for uo other rea. | son than to show that they cannot be “iorced’? to | do what is right and proper they should do, | But it is hardly possibile’ that this stubborn spirit | exists to such an extent, if it exists at) all, as to presume to piace itself in direct opposition | to the will and wishes of the great majority of tne Catholics of this city and neigibvorhood; for, deny % who may, the Catholics are thoroughly aroused on the subject of a change in the way the Cemetery te managed. It may do very well for well-ineaning peng acertain ciassto say that the Caiolics are “indignant” that THE EXPOSURES should have been made, and that they feel that a Diew has been struck at them as Catholics by what has veen published concerning the Cemetery; but the argument isa very fimsy one. The good Catholics of New York are anxtous that the cemetery’s sflaira should be conducted in @ manner that will not Jeave the managemsnt open to assauit, and no amount of quibbliag about “how bad the thing will look” if the charges agalaat the cemetery peopie are pressed home can prevent them tron feeling “indignant”? that anybody should attempt to screen the wrong-doers. They know that there ts more disgrace in allowing the cemetery to be a by-word in everybody’s moutn than, for the sake of peace ana gaiet, in allowing things to go on aa they Rave been going on during the past few years. True, there are catholics who would Father not have the talk about the cemetery made public; but in compartson with those who care nothing for quiobie and expe- @ienctes, and who want the cemetery managed Properly, they are au insignificant minority. The exposures asto the negiect of duty on the part of those who have the affairs of the cemetery in charge were made with the sole aim of correcting the abuses which exist, and Catholics who have eyes to see for themselves how the cemetery is Beglected and its best interests overlooked by its | managers understand this thoroughly. Corby Agnin—Ne Mukrs a Bold Chaltenze. | ‘The following letter will, no doubt, attract atren+ H don trom the quarters most concerned:— New Yor« Nov. 20, 1871. New York, Nov. 17, 1871. To THB Epivor OF THE HERALD:— Having recently read a card in your Journal from the Rev, Thomas Joyce, the chaplain of Catvary Cemetery, aenying the charge of indifference tn the religious rites periormed over the tead in the Mor- tuary Onapel, | beg leave to say that, having visited the cemetery on last Sunday, | found things there as staied in your paper. In the chapel the people are exposed to the draft of cold air by reason there being no vestibule to it, and are interrapted in their devotions by the pounding away at the door to bave it opened tor tne admission of another corpse. A young man, with @ flashy green neckile, et of by & Naming red head, makes the responses ly ov moving his lips, while his eves watider around the chapel in every direction all the time. He uses a rusty iron spade for putting clay over the cofin daring the ceremony, instead of something more portapie and ornamental—say a silver trowel or a large spoon. Could not a boy do the work at winch he ts employed, as ts done at the altars ot the charches, and let nim earn a living at some more congenial employment—a big strong man as he is? Why 18 not the attendant of the priest havited in surphice and cas<ock, as be ought to be? And why does the priest mumbie and sur over the prayers, with 9 parenthetical tone of voice only by which w break ihe ~omsent of bis ut he says to the people—*"Do oor Our Father priest has oniy one sualifegtion r his position, and that te a lugabrious countenance, with a weird gray eye.
