The Essex Statesman’s Early Explanation. Boston, Nov. 22, 1871. Tbat little story whfch came frum Washington the other day, teiling all about the organized oppo- | sition of leading republicans against General Grant’s | Tenomiuation; how they were to meet and consult at Marrisburg on the day set apart for a national thanksgiving, and how they were to setatrap for | disaectoa or progressive democrats, was zeally | laughable in every feature. According to the ludicrous despatches the second nomination of Geueral Grant would have acemed to have becn an impossibility; but when the matter is really penetrated he Is found to be the Javorite in the race, even among those who have been churged with taking a lively interest among the whole tield of Popular competitors who are willing to be entered against him. The story, as it has been published here and there, has been to the effect that on the 30th of the present month, four days before the re- assembling of Congress, a secret council Was to be held in Philadelphia, Saitimore or Harrisburg—most probably in the latter place—which would be composed of General Benja- min F. Butier, of Macsacuusetts; Senator Carl Scaurz, Of Missourl; Jacov Lb. Cox, of Ohio; Senator Spencer, of Alabama; W. M, Evarts, Thurlow Weed, Horace Greeley, ©. A. Dana and George Wiikes, of New York; Scnator Trumvail, of Illinois, and some half dozen or more others of the anti-Grant repub- can managers; that Senators Sumacr, and Wils on, Of Massachusetts, would also each have a finger in the pie, but would not be present on the momen- wus occasion; and that ihe object of this extraordt- nary assemblage would be to arrange a programme for tne coming Congress to head off Gencral Grant and to unite the republicans opposed to his nomina- tou upon some general pian of operation. Such a startling announcement tngpired one of the HgnaLp correspondents to ascertain something of tts truth; and tm the pursuit of toformation ho sought ap luteryiew with General Butier, the seem- ingly alleged ctuef in this organized conspiracy against the prolonging of the present executive branch of we natioual governweul, I weut to the Gencral’s cfice, and ascertaimed that he was en- gazed on the government side in the important government swindling cases lately exposed in bos- ton, To await bis return from protessional duties ‘was te only alternative, and when he at length arrived the HERALD correspondent made kuown the | object of his visit, “} have called, General,” said the Hrrann rep- rescutative, after the usual preliminaries, “to find out something of the details of thts conspiracy | agaist Geacral Grants renominatiun, which, it ts said, you are at ihe head of.
