FINANCIAL AND COMERCIAL, Watt Street, } Sunpay, Oct. 22, 1871. The general trade of the city has naturally suf fered some depression by the calamitous events in Chicazo, a8 much, however, by the excessive can- tion of dealers as by liquidation to get money for sudden wants. The wheat market continued to disappoint the speculative mterest and was lower. ‘The cotton market was weak through the scepticism: of the trade as to the reliability of the prognostica- ttons of a short crop, and underwent a considerable dveline for the week. IN WALL STREET the chief interest has centred in the course of the @tock “market, which, after half a week of continued depression and semt-panic, occcu- pled the remaining three days with. an active business, at a sharp advance in prices. The changed situation of the money market and the relaxation of rules on-call to less than legal interest ‘Was & startling surprise tothe ‘‘bears,’”’ who, Ouding the ease of the market maintained to Saturday, closed their contracts and. made the final business of the week on the Stock Exchange the scene of a “bear” panic. Were 1t another season of the year, Or were not the indications of artificial mantpula- Uon go plentiful, the sudden recovery of the market Would. be @ very natural reaction after the previous heavy ‘decline, But it is hardly probable that money could be worth only 4 per cent on Saturday, when the rate on Tuesday ana Wednesday ranged from 7 per cent to ® per cent. fhe reaction was more Probably a smart and brilliant coup of the lave “bear cliques, who covered their speculative sales “when. the crowd began to sell, and by taking in “long” stock, twisted the host of smaller “bears,” As compared with the lowest prices of the recent panic the'best figures of the rise show an advance ranging {rom 4 to 9 per cent, ‘The gold market was weak under the offer of the government to prepay the November mterest, with the usual rebate, and as @ consequence of the stringency in money which placed gold to the same category as stocks, the price on Monday was 114 and on Friday 112. Here the “bvears’’ covered, and as the Gold Room had generally concluded that the price was going to 111, a new short interest has been formed as an offset to tne bull plans of the larger voperators. ‘The prices left of Saturday evening 112% @ 11234, THE BANK STATEMENT. ‘whe weekly statement of the associated banks ‘proves favorable, thanks 10 the policy of conserva- fism which has been at length adopted by those Anstitations under the significant warnings of the past few weeks, The first feature of importance is. ® contraction of nearly ten millions in loans—a Fesult really not expressive of ali that they have een doing in this direction, so far as Wall street is poncerned; for, with an extension of perliaps five inillions in the way of accommodation to the mercan- Aile interest, they must nave withdrawn fifteen mll- dions from Wall street, with the effect of sending the ‘Wpeculalive interest to the foreign bankers for loans of sterling on pledge of stock collaterals, as was referred to in this column early in the week. ‘Otherwise the statement is not so susceptible of explanation, unless on the theory that the bank sccounts of some of the larger pools in the stock market have been adjusted to produce the discre- pancy. Thus the decrease-in legal tenders is only $827,000, when the shipments of currency to Chicago ‘Were several millions and the refow during the past few days less than half a million. Furthermore, there ts an increase in specie when a decrease ‘was expected, the Treasury receipts for customs @ad the foreign exports of specie being largely in ©xceas of the two millions of government gold sold on Thursday. In partial explanation it is said that ‘the banks have recetpted to the extent of about a Million dollars for the November registered inter- est, and have counted the Treasury checks which are payable on and after Wednesday next as 50 ‘auch specie on hand. The deposits have fallen off leven millions, representing chiefly tne con- oat ‘Toans. So far aa thélr surplus is con- werned, and the calculation ts made for all the Danks on the Clearing House sheet—the Twenty-five Wer Cent law, It & good one, being applicable, so far 4 the interests of the public are concerned, to the tate banks as well as to the national banks—a gain has been acbieved, and they now hold reserve enougn to show a@ surplus of about one and @ half mitions—an amount small enough to have excited considerable remark did it not “faraish a favorable contrast to the deficit of last week, and little enough to meet the ordinary ext- \gencies of the banking movement at tbis season, re- gardless of the financial commotion occasioned by the Chicago fire, The statement compares with ita predecessor of last week ek v Oct. Oct, 21, +4 $283, 511,000 $283,530, 100 specie 9, Pid 10, 101,400 io eed 20,334 80,294,300 nOsits.... ais 12100 203,791,000 tenders. 60,841,900 50,014,700 ‘The changes are In detail as follow: rease in loans. $9,930,990 Increase in 8] 828,700 Decrease tn circulation. 39,700 Ese ‘11,301,100 ecrease in legal tenders 827,200 An analysis of the above figures shows that the actual loss in legal reserve has been $3,500. But the Uabilities being reduced $11,430,800 the banks Could afford to lose $2,854,200 more. Last week fhey were » $1,260,425 behind their reserve. Now $hey are $1,504,775 anead, GOVERNMENT BONDS foilowed the course of the gold market and were tower, but steadily improved toward the close, and pn Saturday sympathized directly with tne buoy- pacy on the Stock Exchange, the ease in money and the strength of the gold market.
