FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. WaLL STRERT, } SATURDAY, Oct. 21—6 ?, M. On *Onange to-day wheat was lower, but the de- line made business and the market was active. Cotsen quietly submitted to a decline of 4c. a 4c THE COTTON MOVEMENT, ‘The receipts of cotton at all the ports for the past week were $2,538 bales, against 64,097 bales the pre- vious Week. The total receipts since Septemver 1, 1871, are 268,874 bales, against 351,090 bales for the sorresponding period of the previous year, showing ® decrease of 82,216 bales in the present crop. The exports from ali the ports for the week were 33,892 bales, against 39,974 bales for the same week last year. The total exports for the expired portion of tue cotton year are 114,075 pales, against 113,477 bales for the same time last year, The stock at all Lhe ports 1s 184,487 bales, against 204,911 bales for the same tme in 1870, THE BANK STATEMENT. The weekly statement of the associated banks proves Javorable, thanks to the policy of conserva- ism which has been at length adopted by those institutions under the significant warnings of the Past few weeks. The first feature of importance Is @ contraction of nearly ten million; in loans—a result really not expressive of all that they have been doing in this direction, so far as Wall street 18 concerned; for, with an extension of perhaps five mullionsin the way of accommodation to the mercan- tile interest, they must bave withdrawn fifteen mil- lions from Wail strect, with the effect of sending the speculative terest to the foreign bankers for loans of sterling on pledge of stock collaterals, as was veferred to in this column early in the week. Other- ‘wise the statement is not so susceptible of explana- tion, unless on the theory that the bank accounts of seme of the larger pools in the stock market have been adjusted toproduce the discrepancy. Thus the @ecrease in legal tenders is only $827,000, when the shipments of currency to Chicago were several mil- hhons and the reflow during the past few days less than half a million. Furthermore, tnere is an in- crease in specie when a decrease was ex- pected, the Treasury. receipts for customs and the foreign exports of specie being largely 2m excess of the two millions government gold sold on Thursday. In partial explanation it is said that the banks bave receipted to the extent of about a million dollars for the November registered inter- ext, and nave counted the Treasury checks which are payable on and after Wednesday next asso much specie on hand, Tne deposits have fallen off ever eleven miluons, representing chiefly the con- traction in loans, So far as their surplus is con- cerned, and the calculation 1s made for all the banks on the Clearing touse sheet—the Twenty. ve Per vent law, if a good one, being as applicable, so tar as the interests of te public are concerned, to the state banks as well as to the national banks—a gain nas been achieved, and. they now hoid reserve enough to show a surplus of about one and a half millions— &n amount sinall enough to have excited consider- abie remark did tt not furnish a favorable contrast to the deficit of last week, and little enough to mect the ordinary exigencies of the banking movement at this season, regardless of the financtal commotion occasioned by the Chicago fire. The statement compares with its predecessor of last week as follows: — Oct, 14. Oct, 21. + $203,511.00 283, 580, 100 9, 10, 101,400 30,294,300 203,791,000 50,014, 700 Deposits, y Legal venders. ‘The changes are in detail as follows:: Decrease in loans. Increase in specie. - $9,990,000 823, 100 89, 11,391, ion 827,200 An analysis of the above figures shows that the Bcival logs in legal reserve has been $3,500, But she liabilities being reduced $11,430,800 they could Bfford £0 lose $2,854,200 more. Last week they Were $1,259,425 behind their reserve. Now they are $1,594,775 anead. MONEY EASY. The money market was easy, and the highest rate paid, even on stock collaterals, was seven, gold.
