GLOUCESTER, Mass., Oct. 17, 1871. The Uulted States steamer Fortune cruise in the bay lust might and spoke about twenty-five fishing vessels. It heard nothing of the Britizh crutsers or | of the schooner Horton, The report of the presence ot a Canadian cutter in our waters ts not confirmed by our pilots or by any vessel arriving from the fisting grounds, and the | only foundation tor the report arises from the fact tha! a vessel was seen from the snore answering to the description of a@ blockade runner. The excite- ment in Gloucester 1s toning down, although the arrival of the schooner Horton 1s looked for with feverish anxiety NO BRITISH GUNBOATS NEAR. The general sentiment is that no Brilisi armed vessel has been seeu of the Cape, although the reyenue officers are still contident ihut the rumors were well founded, Ii such a vessel pretends to have seen her since Monday morntug. Many believed the reported cruiser to have been a United States sicamer with a supply of oil for the light stations, which would account for her being in localities where such a eraft was reported to have deen seen, PRIVATRERS TO THE RESCUE. ‘Three or four armed tngboats are cruising to tnd the Horton and provect ber if necessary.
