FINANUIAL AND COMMERCTL. WALL STRRER, } Moxpay, ¢ et 16—6 ?. M. On Change to-ay wheat was unsettled and lower. The cotton market was heavy and quiet. MONEY ACTIVE, The money market coniinued acuve, and the best class of borrowers had to pay seven per cent even upon pledge of government securities, The stock brokers generally paid seven gold, and some ot the amalier houses liad to allow smal! commissions for the carrying of stocks. The dearest rate this way was not over 2 per cent, but 1-32 and 1-16 were quite common. Commercial paper has no reguiar quotation out- side of bank, where there is a full line of appiicae tions at the legal rate, FORBIGN EXCHANGE LOWEB. The foreign exchange market was weak, owing to the competition of large amounis of bilia drawn agaist the shipment ot government bonds, dut the decline frow this influence would not have been 80 marked had not the stock brokers soid a quantily of prime bills borrowed against the pledge of stock collaterals, ‘Ihe nominal rates were lowered omy one-cighth per cent, but sales on the sirect were made at 4 a % per cent below fle ures at the desk, T'be foliowing were the quota- Uons at the close :—steriing, sixty days, com: mercial, 1074, 8105; good to prime bankers’, 10814 4 108% 5 short sight, 10944 a 10934; Paris, sixty days, 5.40 & 6.334; Short sight, 6,30 a 6.28%; Antwerp, 5.3136 & 6.25; Swilzeriand, 5.28% a 6.23%; Hamburg, 25) a 35%; Amsterdam, 40); a 40%{; Frankfort, 40% Bremen, 7724 a 7835; Prussian thalers, 7124 GOLD LOWER—U14 A 11334. The goid market interally broke down under heavy sales during most oO! the day by the foreign bankers, who were at the sume tine baying government bonds forexport to the European marxet, wh for some reason not as yet explained by cable, our securities underweit a sudden improvement of % a1 percent, as compared with prices toward the close of last week. A recent writer in the London News has been at considerable pains to ex- Plain tne mdiiference of the public to and the Jetuargy of ihe market for British consol or three per ceuts, which he attributes to the less clagnish spirit of English capital nowa- days aad its willingness to invest in securities which are not exciusively the stock of the “tight jitde island.’ A slow transfer of the moneys of old estates from conso!s to debentures has been arststed even by the juages of the Provate Court. The cost of living has been so much enhanced that the three per cenis no longer furnish a competent income to many Who have no other and seek no other means of getting money, Hence necessity has driven them to buy securitics paying higher rates of iiterest, We refer to this article of the News as suggesting the reason why our securities have beea so frm throughout the perturbations of — the London money market durmg the past six weeks. These sales of gold occastoned a decline trom 114 to 11834, ab Which latter point there was no further profit in shipments and the murket became steady, and eventually reacted a fraction, the price of goid during The course of the day is shown tn the 2PM... 2:20 P.M 3PM... 4P. a 6:30 P, M In the gold toan market the rates ranged from 3 to 7 per cent for carrying. ‘The operaticns of the Gold Exchange Bank were as follows:— Gold cleared, Gold balances Currency balances: THE NEW YORK GOLD PXCHANGE. The goveriment lst became quite active, and suddenly advaneed, under purchases by the foreiga bankers, until it got to figures which checked the | export of bonds, when a reaction ensued and prices left off about as they had commenced. STOCKS FEVRRISH AND LOWER, The stock market opened with a pressure to sell at the advanced figures of Saturday evening, aud before the board had fully convened a large decline bad taken place. As the second ooara was getting together there was some disposition to accept a re- action, sad prices did improve, bat without becoming strong the market turned dull Finally a feeling ol disappointment at the continued activity of money led to @ renewal of sales, and the joarket broke down again, the closing prices being generally the lowest of the day. It seems that the banks are taxed to their utmost to meet the demand for money required for remittance to Chicago, The banks there intend resuming next Wednesday, and, while the suggestion is made that they should temporary make thelr clearances with bills on New York, they fina themselves under vne necessity of drawing on New York for currency to supply the wanis of a pepuar vehicle of bnsiness, Aguin, te foreign insurance companies are seiling their draits on London aud shipping cur- reney. Although the losses are really paid from London capttal the money ts just now taken from the limited supply of this city. Moreover, there are numerous speculative capitalists going to Chicago to buy for “cash” such bargains as they may find in real estate and business sites, Under these circumstances the banks are giving the cold shoulder to borrowers on stocks, and tho cliqae holders of the latter have been ransacking Exchange place to-day for loans of steriing bills, which they have thrown on the market for gold, and eventually for the currency to repiace the loans withdrawn by the banks. These facts have again disheartened those who deemed the worst gone by and beileved the market capable of a smart rally. Arrangements were also made at the meetlog on Sunday for the grand Polish fair, which 18 to be held inthis city on the 20th of November Next the proceeds of which are to be devoted in Jur. The HERALD reporter was informed that prominent Polanders in this city = had no reason | whatever to antielpate any trouble from any acts of i their countrymen, Polanders im this ctiy were | all united in regard to their own conntry, but that ih Unity so far from Legetting such an uuseemly dis- | play of imagined patriotisia prevented the exist- | elice of feelings that would prompr to such conduct, In juct, the Polapders im this y had not an ate | kind thought toward the Grand Duke and were leo | manly to insult a youth who could not pos. | 5 be held responsible fur tne fate of Poland. ‘They fel) certain that the young Russian, Prines would have @ pleasant tour in America, and, #0 far as they were conecrned, noth- ing should vecur to mar Ainerican hospitality to tie royal visitor, though feeling perfeclly tudierent | ab nt the Ozar and his family. H These sentiuients prevailed amon the Polanders { with whom the reporter conversed, and he as- sured were Je't by all oltizens of Polish vir now in | New York, 80 that the rumored conspiracy agatnot the Grand Duke Alexis seems to bave no fonndanon | and may be disunissed as ant t Mginary evil.
