It was in vain that I tried 10 tmagine [ heard a laugh from some group which looked leas disconsolate than another, out case the laughter f thought 1 heard turved out to be a of anguish, My pen al- mosi refuses to write furt! of this terribie evidence of what the disaster had done in one of its phases -of how 1t seemed to have stabned to the heart without actually putting out of life each one of the hundreds that were within calling distance of My Voice, yet every one of whom seemed as full of physical health as could be. I wandered about among the crowds that were walking in little groups and TALKING IN LOW TONES together, feeltug as though I were the only person wiih life and thonght in me, and that all wuo passed me, heediess how I knecked against them or got in their way, were so many automatons, with power of sorrowful specch only. It would be a futile task for me to attempt to describe the many Uttle scenes that were so m- timately interwoven with the main scene of the encampment, and which made it she mournful gathering 1t was. To the right and left—no matter wi way I turned or how anxiunsly ! tricd to peer ‘ond the groups fora vacant space—my searching eyes Were met with little knots Of inen, women aud chilaren, some sitting, some standing, some lying on the ground, and ali, even to the litte prattling ones, wearing a look of such sopreme sadness that my beart bled as T gazed and continued to gaze, fascinated ia @ strange way by the sorrow and angursh depicted upon every coontenance. Did you ever look upon the face of a man who escapes from a shipwreck and gets to the shore, Knowing that his wife ana little ones had gone down, down UNDER THR VITILESS WAVES never to rise? Did you ever notice how, if he be & j man of wiil, he says not a word: how his face, paie as the whitest marhle, seeingto you paler every time hiseye meets the pitifal glare of his neighbor; how the lips tighter ana the hands clench, and he thik al! the while he is concealing his :reat sore } row within bis own breyst? Such was the look of | about every man i came across tn this { FIELD OF WOR for they tad, every one of them, it is true, escaped a danger that was past; Dut how many, on, how ; Many. as they wandered about witn that agonizing ; look upon their faces and turned their eyes toward ! the black clouds that hovered over where their homes | Were once, were thinking of those loved and dear | ones who had tried to escape when they did and who. | Bre now---God knows where? Yetin it we saw reficcted all the suffer- ing, all the losses, all the heartbreakings, all the ‘wials endured elsewhere and stili to be endured, and that was what made it seem to me, and what would have made 1t seem to any ene who beheld it, THE SADDEST SCENE Of all the sad scenes witnessed during the wreck of desolation, I had scarcely the heart as 1 went sbout among the people to say & word to any one I met. 1t was no place for words of pity, and ex- pressions of sympachy would have been HORRID MOCKERY, yet occasionaliy 1 plucked up courage enough to Apeak to 4 few of the nen and women, caretul all the while to speak feelingly of tne great misfortune that had befalien the pm Without lor @ moment making my sympathy look like pity for thar own particular desolations; for, strange a8 it may seem, the more I wandered among these unfortunate, brave-nearted refngees, the more did I become impressed thal they felt their own sorruw so deeply that a third person who dared to express sorrow for them in particular would have been treated to a qwek rebum. | sat down beside one young man and his wife ip the Park and PARSOOK OF THE OOD with snem which the mau had procored, | believe, from the place’ where me xehef Committee had sent food for distribution, 1 could not but pity the poor young wife as she sat with her beaad upon her husband's knees, and her face covered with ier hands, while she cried oh go bitterly! The dealers im art works are confident that the comleg season will be the most brilliant which has ever beeu in this city. Under this im- pression they are uraking considerable ventures to place really good Works within the reach of intend- ing purchasers, SCRAUS’ GALLERY is enriched by the addition of Hugues Merie’s “MARGURRITE,"? ‘The artast has selected the moment when Martha exhibits the casket of jewels given her by Mephis- wpheles, and Marguerite, with womanly vanity, decks herself in the tempung trinkets. Martna is in a Kneeling posture on the left, with her face turned With a satisfied expression towards the mawen. In tae leaning over the oid fashioned chair, from which Marguerite nas risen, ‘we see the arch tempter, evidenUy delighted at the success of his rose, ‘The composition of the gronp expresses fully the Incidcat, and is forcible and efigctive without affectation, Naturaliy ihe mam interest centres in the maiden, and the artist has exerted bts power successfully to prodace an ideal Margoenve, The maiden is atthat delightiul period of iife when the girl passes intotne woman, and seems for an Istaut to anize the charms of both Dbases of existence, Her form is gracefui snd slender, but round and well formed, and. the pose easy, natural, and expressive. In her right hand she holds a small carved ivory mirror, in which spe look# with quiet complacency. Something of impassiveness has been given to the expression of the face, which is unrailed vy one anholy thonght, No idea of evil hea ever entered the Mind of the artist’s Margneiite, and even while sie evidently finds her beauty heightened by tne rich adornment of the jewels her's 1s the innocent co- quetry of unstained girlhood. Me painting of the face reveals at once a depth of tenderness and power of treatment seldom witnessed in modern art, Warmtn bas been imparted to the flesh with- out destroying a sentiment of cold parity which breathes from her face, The cdlor of the dresses 1s weil harmonized and in keeping with the general weatment. In the same gallery we noticed one of Verbockhoven’s older works, which merits atten- ton. 1tls a painting of A MAD BULL leaping a fence. The action of the enraged animal js forcible, and danger threatens from the flaming eyes, 1018 an excellent study of aulimat Ite; good in color and well modelled, Great care has been «is- ploved in painting the texture of the hide, which seems periectiy natural. GOULIES GALLERY Gives evidence of considerable activity, and presents ever-changing features of intcrest. Puoiy’s “Qneen Catoerine,’’ and Carl Becker's “Bishop of Bemburg” bave disappeared and been replaced by two works of more real value, “THE ANTE-CNAMBER,” by Becker, exibits @ decided improvement on his “Bishop of Bemburg,” Wough 16 displays tne same Weakness of perspective. The expression on the lgces of the differeat figures waiting at tne door of the great man are well imagined and skilfully avd cacetully treated, but the figure drawing might be improved, Becker displays considerable power over color, gud bis treatinen: of the textares of the Gresses and hapgings of the room is remarkably Hue, His Mesh coloring is not so good. ‘The compo- sition and intention Of the groups in this picture are Narmonious and appropriate, The ‘“Aute-cham- ber” is & work thas. with many vistbie defects, pos- Sesses good qualities of no ordinary kind. “A MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE,)? by Achenboch presents @ View Oj @ spur of moun- tain, With an oja, fortalice-looking builamg m the right middie distance and the low country exvend- Ing away to the left, The paintung 1s forcible and the composition good, but tie jabor is raw and somewhat peculiar. A patch of vegetation in the Tight foreground has been painted with great care, aud the artist has striven with # good deal of suc- cess to gel the leaves into high relief, but tue form of the leaves bas not been sufficiently attended to, A group of peasants carrying burdens on the road is well composed, We notice here the first result of the autumn labors of our native artists in a charm- ing little lake ecene by W. Hart. Delicate tuts of yellow, brown and crimson have replaced 1ne vernal foliage of the trees, and the scene seems to g.ow With colors of @ subdued briliancy, which contrast Pleasantly with the calm, cool waters of the lake. These sleep in andisturthed etill- bess, with @ warm haze, rendering the distant view indistinct. The composition of the scene js quite charming and the colors are well iiar- moutzea, but it strikes us that the foliage of the trees in the foreground is too glowing. From France we have a splendid picture by Gustave Brion, of Paris—-its subject, A FUNERAL IN VENICE. On one of the sombre canals of the Queen of the Adriatic a gondola oats silently along, bearing its sad burden to the last resting place. fu the centre of the gondola @& group of four inen, dressed in acariel, bearing lglted torches, accompany the dead, The composition of this strange group of mourners is excellent, and reveals rare power in the artist. A vy beaulif! effect 1s produced by the hight falling on the scarlet robes of the assist ants, Without losing any of its solemnity the scene is deprived by the introduction of u rich colors of its repulsivencass, and Jt Js possible to look on cue riously at this painliny a8 au art work Without feel- ing any of the disgust or repuision which the com- Yemplation of death usually inspires. Full of dignity and cal, the figures of the assistants impress ‘Us With the importance of the occasion, but there is noUnng Iuzubrious in the expression of thelr faces, which are Weli studied and paintea with great care and Success. Indeed, the artist seems to have Worked conscientiously on every inch of bis canvas. He has produced a picture periéct in tone and fall of dramatic interest, in which the accessories have deen subordinates, withont peing sucrificea to the general effect. A VIRGIN AND CHILD, by Muller, of Dusscidort, recalla us ‘to the religious art of the thirteenth cencury, both im the manner of treatmeut and the feeling underlying it, Tne Virgin holds the infant Jesus ou her knees where he stands With arms outstretched, An expression of dignified Tepose 1s given to the Virgin, which is well 1m keep- ii with her sacred character. Quiet, subdued colors have been chosen for the garments and acces- sory drapery, but we cannot admire the pecuitar nucners selected by the artist. Wonderful mmutie has been displayed in the painting of ihe foreground, which is covered with flowers and grasses, and eacil blade and leaf has been faithfully renderea, MURDER OF THE INNOCENT.
