The large lecture room at Plymouth church was crowded last night, and nobody was surprised when Mr. Beecher'’s subject for the evening “talk” was announced to be the terrible fire and con- seqnent suffering in Chicago, He sata:—it has become a matter of remark to those who study the interior of history that events move im cycles, In certain years there are riots, or commercial troubles, and.80 ‘it'would seem that there are years of catastrophes, and this might be called the year of fire. In the burning of town after town, of men, women and children by the scores, there would seem to be enong: to terrify us, even if it were not for the greater disaster of Chicago. This last disaster can De measured by the way in which it dwarts otter calamities. I am utterly unabie to take In the calamity of Chicago. As it is in the case of moustains when first seen, I cannot adjust my sight to take it in. It was so during the war. I. could feel only 60. much, and then I was full, but . the events went on. So with this disaster. Tne desolation of a house Is ag much as you can fecl, but take a street of houses, and then a ward, and from that to miles, ‘and tens of thousands, and filty thousand, and two hundred thousand people homeless, and it 13 wholly immeasurable, The mass and MAGNITUDE OF SUPFERING cannot be estimated, Yet, though we catinot mea- sure it and take IU in, every individual goes on suf- fering, Cbicago is not destroyed; like another Pha- nix, It will rise again, The strong will take care of themselves; but 0, for the poor, the women and chnagen the aged and the stranger, my heart goes oNext to the greatness of tne calamity is the ad- Miravleness of the sympathy. Tag whole Northern part of the nation has uprisen and streicued out its arm+and taken that great city to itsneart. We know no Catnolic, nu Protestant, no demociat no repubitcan, and the hand ot’ the charity of this nation is: like God’s hand, ti sendeth rain upon the just and the unjust. It is sublime, and when you add thatiacruss the sea the kingdom of Great Britain aad the German nation are sending their gifce it Lape how the great element of Chris- tan sympathy hag UNITIZED THR WORLD. It Is one of the auspicious signs of the times, ‘There cA one danger, ahd that 13 that our sympathy will merely extotive, and tnat ag the weary wibien i mou 3 Move On We shall get tired. Suifer- iz never gets tired. I have a letter irom Brother lett, formerly of the Elm place church of this city. He writes:— “Chicago. 25 far a3 ite busin2ss is concerned, is gw off this earth, Your heart ber suggest what do, We need money.’ Beecher added that ihe Rev. Mr. Patten’s church had been spared as well as Mr. Bartiett’s, and voth of them areL.ing used for the homeless—as good @ use as a church was ever iS to, He con- Unued:—I nave been struck with the indifference of some men to tie terrifo suffering. Some say there can’t bea devil. Inuve only to eay that if tuere isn'ta devil there ia very good material 10 make ove Of, and if God 18 too good to have @ devil in chiet He ign’t'too good to have one in deiail, Nothing can exceed the wickedness and inhumanity of those men who have taken this occasion to prey upon their fellow men. A téliei association has been formed by the Young People’s Associnvoa, and the church will be open every day this weck to receive money or clothing to be sent to the destitute in Chicago, Contributions wa considerable extent have already been seut in FOREIGY PERSONAL G;sSIP. ‘adatom Acre pad Le phebait susan te Rghense’ d recently of apoploxy while mal the ascen!
