4 BOXED UP BODY. The Remains of a Woman Found in a Trunk. Checked te Chicago by the Hudson River Railroad. A HORRIBLE BAGGAGE REVELATION. The Supposed Victim of Abortion. Tt was growing dark at seven o'clock last even- tng when four persons, three of whom were repre- sentatives of ‘the press, entered a low shed, little | more than six feet high, within the enclosure of the | Hudson River Railroad at Thirtieth street. The lamp was brought, Mr. Van- @ervort, the baggage master of the road, supplied askeleton key, by whict the trunk was opened, and then there was ceriainly presented a spectacle which few people in sane heaith would caré to look at twice. The lamp illumined a small Portion of tie Jow shed in which a few old trunks and odds.and ends of ropes and rusty iron tackles seemed to be deposited. The light wasa dull yellow giare that made gloomy the whole surroundings. A gentieman of the party, of tron nerve, whose ex- perience in the war embraced the handling of dead bodies with a pitckfork, undertook the task of raising the lid off the ill-fated trunk which stood im the corner. It was an ordinary trunk, of the character one may see in front of most trunk makers’ sheps on the Bowery, labelled three dollars @ pieos, and with rivets of peculiar style, following ‘@ recent patent, which pretends to more ornament than utility. He unlocked the trunk with a skeleton key, and for a moment taere was a thrill of painful m O’Brien sald, ‘Gentlemen, Jet the doors be ‘closed, for there is @ crowd outside and they want tocome anyhow.” The respouse was, “Al, no! letthe doors be left wide open or the smell will stife us to death.” A policeman on tne outside, whose distinguished name it was impossible to se- oure as he flited soon afier the sued was opened, exclaimed just at the same time “G' wan Out a that, will ye. A young Woman, rather meanly dressed, stepped from. out ibe coupé and passed up the side- walk a few yards to where tue driver of the furniture wagon was preparing to it the trunk, which composed the only, irerght he bad, down to the curbstone. The sharp liitle newsvoy, every ready to turn @ penny, stepped in when be saw the truckman had more than ne could do to carry the trunk ip by Himsels, and said, *‘1’1i heip If you give me ten cents.” She replied, “i will give you ten cents. 1am doing ‘unis for a friend of une.” The trunk was taken in between the boy and the furniture wagon men; and, the way, the hame on the wagon, as the boy wards stated, was “Tripp.” ‘The trunk was brought in, amd, by the voluntary aid of the woman herself, was lifted up on the counter of tie baggage office. The little boy Potts remarked, “You had verter have @ strap around that baggage of yourn.” She said she had Bo objection. While the alarm at the approach of pestilence has stirred up the Inhabitants uf New York and impelled the Sanitary Commission to adopt strict precau- tons the authorities of Jersey City are slumbering. | Only a few days ago the HeRratp directed attention to certain localities and even to certain houses that cated for immediate inspection, Nothing whatever bas since been done in these cases, A HERALD reporter paid a visit to the localities | complained of and then called on the Health In- spector, AN APPOINTEE OF THB POLICE COMMISSIONERS, named Cannon. But he could notoe found. Sev- eral calls were made, and at last the oficial turned up. The reporter pointed out the localities which would become THE HABITATIONS OF DEATH should pestilence break out, Certain houses in South Eighth street were particularly adverted to, They have a respectable exterlor, but when & person enters the premises the obnoxious oders are at once detected. In one of these houses (No, 213) @ lady has been suffering for months from complaints whicn the highest medical authority in the city ascribes to noxious gases arising from neglected cellars and filthy water closets. Descending tuto the cellar the reporter found @ hydrant without any channel for the water to escupe, save througn @ wide chink used by the teariug up of a board in the floor. Into this opening one of the occupants of the house was in tue habit of depositing filth, woich should render him AMENABLE TO THR GRAND JURY. Sometimes tue festering matter would find its wa, through the soit clay beneath the floor, while at other mes the deposit resved there quite visiple for days, And yet three families are continually inhaling the euiuvla arising trom this improvised cesspool. The former seems to consider only his rights, and IGNORES ALL DUTIES to his tenants. This ts only asample of numerous cases, And if this be the case tn a comparative respectable locality, what must be the CONDITION OF THE SLUMS? The case at once commenied itself to the atten- tion of Mr. Cannon, who sent the usual notloe to the landiord. Yesterday aiternoon the agent of the proverty had an interview with the inspector, who inigrmed wie HeRalp reporter soon after that he was sausfled there was nothing objectionaole in the premises. This conciusion he arrived at on the mere (pse dizi! of the agent and without making any Investigation. He declared that he would take | no steps In the matter. Everything, it seems, had been perfectly understood between him and the agent. Tue case will now be reported to the Street Commissioner, Benjamin Van Keuren, and the conductof the Health Inspector will be, doubtless, laid before the Police Commissioners, who are entrusted by the city charter with the sanitary condition of the city. If the Commission- ers act ag promptly aud justly as they didin the case of Mahon, they will make some REPARATION POR TH’ MULTITUDE OF INIQUITIES which Ue atthe doors of the Commission. Something must be done, and done promptly, else Jersey City will become A FERTILE PLAGUE SPOT. All tue vigilance and activity of the slumbering authorities waich will in such a case be aroused vi an Indiguant people will then come too late. L—All Sorts of Sperts—Generous Aid from Professionals A Cbance for Amateurs, It 1s oftea complained that the orphans of our soldiers who died during the war are left compara tively unprotected, and that national institutions, such as are to be found in European countries, do not here exist, Private beneficence, however, has done much to soften this stigma, and among other noble institutions for the care of the soldiers’ orphans ts the Union Home and School, located in Eleventh avenue, between 150th apd 165lst streets, which now appeais to the public for aid. This insutution has long been+ doing its charita- ble work at the expense of several ladies of this city, who have generously supported it by thelr private donations, but owing to the constantly in- creasing uumber of applicants and the inadequate accommodations of the building now in ase hun- dreds of children have to be turned away, left to whatever chance the world may afford them, At present tne building can accommodate about 200, but there are fully 100 more receiving the protec- tion of the institution, The ladies in charge of the Home have, therefore, resolved to enlist public sympathy in behalr of the little ones, and to this end are avoul getting up a “grand muiutary festival and fee champeire,” which 1s to commence on Monday, | October 2.
