SARATOGA RACES. FIRST DAY OF THE AUGUST MEETING A Brilliant Assemblage—Fine Racing—Splen- did Time and a Glorions Day’s Sport in General. _ Banter & Traver’s Two-Year-Oid Colt Beats Cameron’s Filly in the $10,000 Match, Harry Bassett Wins the Kenner Stakes, Hamburg the Summer Handicap and Or- tolan the Three-Quar- ters of a Mile Dash, SARATOGA, August 16, 1871. ‘This hae been a great day at Saratoga for he Borsemen and fashion votaries. The magnificent muccess of the first of the races has astonished everybody and set-the village agog. In every hotel, from the palatial structures on Broadway to the less pretentious on side streets, and from every sweet eottage, embowered in groves of silver maples, to every Jowly hut on the outskirts, there were tokens @f preparation and din of a gathering ofthe forces hat aNerward were seen on the course and stands. ‘Mind you, it 1s-often experienced in this retreat that your want-to-ve-odd people, who stay away from the ‘track, are very numerous. * They afiect contrariness, @ud once say race horse to them and they’il tell you they would rather enter a lunatic asylum than go through ihe ordeal of dressing for the din and con- fusion of a drive and a race. But to-day there is a revolution in this respect, Big anc little, lazy and active alike made up their wnlnds to give the meeting a huge send-off, and they ave done 1t gorgeously and splendidly. Icould see ‘they meant It last night, and just after twilight had ushered in the night and the stars of heaven en- @eavored Ineflectually to outshine the brilliant ten Wousand lgdts pendant from balconies and piazzas, the great crowds of visitors began to promenade ‘end talk of the contesis of to-day. Honr after bour ‘She jargon Of voices went on, and, while the streets echoed the pleasurable expectancy of the several @troggies, awey back in rear builidings and Gown im basements tbe venturesomo were assem- bled to Jay thelr dollars on favorites, 1n all my pre- ‘ious experience at this gay watering place the scene Of lust night excelied, in beauty and variety, every other occasion. It seemed like a picture in fairyland, and, in the words of a young lady waik- Sug with & wan famous for his mammoth side whis- kers and lemonade expression, in front of tne Grand Union, must declare “it was ev’nly.” Not alone was Broadway, from the Mar- vin to the Clarendon Hotel, crowded witb eli that is higu-toued in man and “ev’niy” am woman kind, but the quiet nooks, the exquisite litie cottages, were surrounded by their wn peuple, and the night alrin these streeta—at times like unto the stillness of deatn—was exqui- sitely broken by the strains of music bidden to rise ‘Dy jewelled hands, Atnine o’ciock I jeft the army 1 promenaders and Mirters in the ceutre of the vil- Jage, and, like a spook, walked about the quiet ave. ®ues to breathe more treeiy and get away for a ume Srom the excitement and bustle of thousands. Five mivutes’ walk and I found myself listening to She grand symphony of sacred music which ne household thought better ww indulge ap than that of the lighter notes of the aance and ecntimental song. On the next block the scene whavged. A brick cottage glowing with @ score of Aights stood back in the yard, and from parior ot Nazza gused rippling iaugbter and cheery musi it Was ho troubie ip a glancing look to note pret ‘woinan with stately forms in the wide parlors, an uu aimost had the Impertinence to stop und listen the unctious rendering of that oid nigger song:. He bugg'd me, he kiss’! me, He bugz'd me, be kiss'd me- and tux me by de ban’ He bugg'd me, he kiss'd mo, and tuk me by de ta And aaid I was de'nicest, pootiest tie girt in ali the lan’, Aus den I was gove, dewd gone, ciean gone. Who can doubt they were not happy? And Sara- toga last nigit, one and all, expressed by voice and ction just such unity of sentiment and con- miality of soul, Une could vot grow morose un- jer 1ts intiuences. Along the Lake Road this morning I counted scores of private equipages tn all the ey, of their trappings and bhammercijoths, with footmen and vach wen giorious in color and faming with biaz- ang buttons. hen came bascet phaetons, ba- roocues, farm wagons, carryalis and every other ‘Bort of vehicle under heaven, conveying loads of pecious humanity to the track. Arrival of the New York Yacht Squadron at Newport. tee: ann com Sha Pte Expectations of the Inhabitants—The Citizens’ Cup~A Grand Thee for a4 achts. the coming oF the —-z Newport, R L, August 16, 1871. ‘The interest manifested here in the arrival of the New York Yacht Squadron is increasing, and the coming races are awaited by the citizens with plea- sant anticipations owing to the several new vessels that have been adaed to the flect since last year. That the resluents of this old bistoric ¢lty fully ap- preciate the honor of the visit of the squadron is evi- dent from the handsome cup which they generously offer for competition among the yachts in are- gatta to come of durmng the week. This prize 1s Known as the Citizens’ Cup, and is valued at $500, The course will be left to the selection of a regatta committee: but, in all probability, the race will take place over the old ground, from Fort Adams to and around the buoy off Block Island and return, or it may be a triangular contest. In any event, the distinction attached to the winning of this cup is highly prized by yacht owners, as it is the gift of a city that all yachtsmen like to visit and with which their pleasantest recollections of hearty weicome are associated. . Beyond all doubt, then, this race will create a con- siderable amount of pleasuraple excitement and will be witnessed by all who have the ume and opportu- nity todoso. Itis thought that over twenty schooner yachts will enter for the Citizens’ Cup. Following this event, or perhaps preceding it, will be some regattas for subscription cups, but no definite pro- gramme will be arranged until a sufficient repre- sentation of the feet has arrived, when a meeting wili be held on board the flagship and the arrange- ments completed. Several of the vessels came to anchor in the harbor this afternoon, salutes an- nouncing to the inhabitants the welcome tidings. The new schooner yacht Resolute, A. 8, Haten, arrived here at four this afternoon from Greenport. The Rambler, James K. Banker, left Nantasket Roads at eigut o’clock on Monday night, and came to anchor in Vineyard Haven at two o’clock yester- day. Four hours later she weighed anchor, and after | @ capital ran came in here at three o'clock this afternoon. She looked exceedingly trim and neat, and her pretty lines and beartiful proportions were much aamired by the numerous visitors that came out from the wharves in smail boats to look at her, The schooner Madgie, R. F. Loper, arrived from Stonington avout two o’clock, having left that Jocality shortly after eleven O'clock. Mr. Louis Lorillard’s yacht Wanderer put in an appear- ance this evening at seven o’clock, having Jelt Vineyard Haven this morning. The Sappho, Vice Commodore Douglas, left Nantasket Roads at half-past 81x o’clock Jast night, touched at Vineyard Haven and arrived here at hall-past five o'clock. She had a very fine run, with the wind on her quar- ter from the southeast, from Vineyard Haven, al- though the weather was thick and heavy. The yachts in Vineyard Haven upou her arrival there Were the Halcyon, Tidal Wave, Dreadnaught, Wan- derer, and sioop Vindex. The remainder of the squadron will be here to-night or in the morning. roughout the day the wind was pretty fresh, with @ heavy sea outside the harbor. No accidents have CI yet been reported. A gala seasun is expected ere. a SIMPSON, THE SCUITLE THIEF, A Noterious Burglar Arrested in the Nine- teenth Ward with oa Uag ef Stelon Jewelry. For some time past the citizens of the Nineteenth ‘ward have been ropbed by two young men, wno represented themselves as painters having been sent to the houses by the landiords to patnt and repair the roofs. Gaining admission to the roofs they would visit the adjoining houses, and, raising the scuttles, would visit the inside of the houses and = ransack them of all valuables they could stow away. Wednesday afternoon last the young men, having tn thelr possession paint pots, vrushes and other tools used by painters, visited the house of Captain Car! Klein, 167 East sixtieth street, ; and represented to Mrs, Kieiu that they uad becn- sent by the Jandiord TO REPAIR AND PAINT THE ROOF, They were let into the house and eucceeded In car- ee of about eight hundred doliars’ worin of jewelry, Yesterday afternoon they visited the house of Thomas Stevenson, at 56 West Filtieth street, and requested permission to go on the roof, as they had been sent to repair the rou! of the adjoining house, the occupants of which were in the country. Omoer Tully, of the Ninéteenth precinct, who was on post in Filtieth street, seeing one of them poke his head over the cornice of the house adjoining, surmised all was not right, and wevt to make an investigation, As he was nearing the place one of them shouted through the scuttle, “Bill, get out your pistol and shout the damned son of a v—.'? ‘The officer chased them into the basement, and, afier a desperate struggie, in which he was com- pelled to use his club rather freely, succeeded in capturing one of them, who gave his name as James Simpson, nineteen years of age, residing at the corner of Forty-second street and Fourth avenue, Siuipsou’s accomplice succeeded In making his escape by JUMPING THROUGH A BASEMENT WINDOW. In their possession was found a satchel containing about $2,000 worth of jewelry and a Dumber of burgiars’ tools. Tne officer, upon making # further examination, founda they had ransacked the houses Dos. 62 and 54 West Fittieth street, aud packed all the jewelry and valuables they could Ond.
