Experiences on the Camp Ground—Brother Jcnes in Search of a Bed—A Camp Meeting Character. MbrrioK, L, I., Angust 14, 1871. Religious gatherings are not without their quaint and amusing experiences and ludicrous characters. The camp ground at Merrick is no exception, and one of the most remarkable characters seen on the ground this season is an eccentric Brooklynite famiharly known as “Uncle John.’? Uncle John, otherwise Brother Simpson, 1s a member of the Simpson Methodist Episcopal Church, and one of its wealthiest members. He 1s a genuine “charac. ter’? wherever he goes, and furnishes more fun for the children by tue oddity of his attire and the quaintness of his gait than a travelliag circus could give. Uncle John’s clothes hang loosely on his person and his cravat is generally ander his ear, something like that of the philosopher of printing House Square. His shirt bosom (usually a “dickie’’) jets out from either side of his shabby, careless worn vest, and many a better hat than his hangs as a sign outside the hat stores of New York. Oncle John carries peaches and cakes and such nice things in his hat, on the top of nis head, and when he wishes to treat an acquaintance he takes off his hat and allows fhe friend to dip in and help himself. When he goes to his meals in the restaurant tent he lays his hat conventently before him on the table and helps himself therefrom. Knives and forks he uses nominally, and as he believes that ‘fingers were made before forks’’ ne WALL STRERT, } Monpay, August 14, 187L. GOLD 112}s' A 112%. Gold made a further advance to-day, reaching 112% at about the period of closing the room and remaining firm to the close of business, In the pre= vious part of the day the premium vibrated between 112% and 1125. The immediate cause of the ad- vance Was the pressure brought to bear upon the shorts by the high rates demanded for the use of cash gold, compelling them to cover their contracts. The loaning rate during the day and before noon ranged from 1-16 to % Of 1 per cent for borrowing, which fell of at the close gio 1-82 of 1 per cent. The dealings in the market were mostly confined to loans, and the gales were of small amount until late in the day. fhe operations of the Gold Exchange Bank were as follows:—Gross clear- mgs, $44,577,000; gold balances, $1,274,503; cur- rency balances, $1,554,742. GOVERNMENTS UNSETTLED, The government list was unsettled and irregular to-day, under the conflicting influence of a decline in bonds abroad—presumably referable to the pres- sure of the new 5 per cents upon the London and Frankfort markets by mem- bers of the syndicate—and the firmness of the gold premium here. The market opened withasharp advance in the long sixes of 1881 to 117% bid, and an advance of }¢ in the fives twenties of 1864, The new 65's sold at 113, while the rest of the list were sicady. At noon the 1's sold at 117% and 117%, old 60s at 11434 and 68's at 114, Ten-forties went of 3s. Currency sixes were firm. The entire business of the day was mode- rate. The market closed strong at the following prices:—United States currency sixes, 115 @ 115%; do., 1881, registered, 117% @ 118; do, do., coupon, 118 011834; do. five-twenties, registered, May and No- vember, 114 a 11434; do. do., 1862, coupon, do., 1143¢ @ 114%; do. do., 1864, do. do., 114a 11434; do. do., 1805, do. do., 114% a 11424; do, do, registered, January and July, 11274 @ 11334; do. do,, 1865, cou- Pon, do,, 112% & 11334; do. do. 1867, do. do., 113% & 11334; do. do,, 1868, do. do,, 114.a 11444; do, ten- forties, registered, 1093g a 10934; do, do., coupon, 11356 @ 113%. STOCKS DULL AND HEAVY. The stock market opeued with a weak feeling, and prices soon run of fromthe closing figures of Saturday night, Western Union, Union Pacific and Pacific Mail were the features, and after these North- west and Erle. The course of the market during the day was irregular; but, excepting in the stocks mentioned, no very wide fluctuations were recorded. In the afternoon the market rallied from the lowest point of depression, but seemed without much sup- port, In Erie the only interest was a sudden break from 3034 to 28%, which was followed by a partial rally. The market at the close was quiet and steady mostly between the extremes of the day. THE EXTREMES. ‘The following were the highest and lowest prices of stocks during the day:— Highest, tenes New York Central and Hudson con'd. 983g gives them the first chance. Uncle Jonn does not believe in rabbing the enamel off his hands and face by the too free use of soap and water, and hence he always looks more or less interesting and makes a reasonabiy good subject for the mosquitoes to ex- periment upon. Sometimes the mischievous young ones get behind Uncle Jonn and up his hat off nis head, and as the contents roll about the ground they 8cal x off, laughing heartily at the old saint’s predicament. But ne takes it in good part, believ- ing that through much tribulation the saints must euter the kingdom. Uncle Jolin appears to be, reli- giously, very happy, and he gocs about the camp ground during hie spare hours singing lustily, I'm ba ap-py, EY bi A Tin 01 ae 0 bine PY: 1'm ba-ap-py, Pin heap, I'm on my journey home. Occasionally he stands at @ tent door and sings some familiar hymn from @ little pocket hymn book which he carries with him. He often feels the “‘bap- tism of the Holy Gnost,”? and is fond of telling to others around what a@dear Saviour he has found. About a year ago Uncle John married.a wife whom he woed and won in New York, and thus brought nis batchelor lite to & close. He has nefther busi- ness nor occupation, but lives retired on his mean: his only purpose now being, as le says, to work ant live for the Lord. And in this work he seems to be active and earnest according to the measure of ability and grace given unto him. He ts a regular visitor every year at the camp meetings in the vicinity of New York. The Pavilion is a wooden structure about twenty- five feet wide and forty feet deep and two stories high. Tne ground foor is used as a dining hall, kitchen, pantries, &c., and the second floor a sleep- ing room for men, and the top floor is the ladies’ dormitory. Single beds are charged for at the rate of fifty cents a night and double beds seventy-five cents, It is sometimes amusing, sometimes serious, to witness the ludicrous mistakes made in the letting of these beds. Each bed 1s numbered, and the visi- tor pays his money, but does not always get his choice, nor even the bed he thinks be has paid for. For instance, Brother Jones leaves the prayer mect- Ing tent at @ quarter past ten o'clock P. M. and repairs to the Pavilion, expecting to rest serenely iné ved No. 18, but he enters to find that Brother Smith hag been assigned to the same bed, and has already preempted his claim and is in quiet occupancy of the same.
