THE MORGUE AND THE HOSPITAL Warrowing Scenes Identification. at the COMPLETE LIST OF THE DEAD, Bedside Incidents at Bellevue Renesas SLAUGHTER OF THE INNOUENTS. A Sweet Little Baby Waiting for Identification. TOUCHING SCENES AT THE MORGUE, eoney IMPORTANT GOVERNMENT ORDER. AN Ferryboats in the United States to be Reinspected, MW AND AROUND THE MORGUE, Btarting from Broadway along Twenty-sixih street ‘toward the Bellevue Hospital tue eye of the stranger ‘was grected yesterday morning with a crowd of ‘anxious persons wending their weary way toward the same place. From Fourth avenue eastward tue mumber increased until, at and around tne hospital, a mulritude thronged, and 1 required the ald of the police to keep them in order so that a long Line of mourners looking for missing friends might enter tne Morgue, one by one, to see whether any of ‘she many bodies lying there were those of the joved and missing ones, Now and again, A SHRIEK RENT THE AIR, asa father, brother, son, mother, daughter, sister or friend was recognized by the surviving relative. At was then but the work of a few moments to re- move the dead to the rear, where the body and the friends awaited the Coroner's permit for its inter- ment, And thus it was all day long, from early morn until midnight, the multitude anon increasing or diminishing as circumstances admitted or curl esity aud anxiety impelled. It was a sad and mournful sight, aud was enough to draw tears from the most callons hearts, The physicians of the Pespital and others who are used to death in all its ‘varied lorms were obliged to be grave and solemn ‘tn the midst of such # harvest as THE GHASTLY MONARCH OF CREATION had here placed at their feet. Strong men who bad passed safely through scenes of carnage on many a Dattle fleld acknowledged that they had never wit- meased anything like thie, as with abated breath hey whispered to each other and to the anxious ‘wuestioners outside their opinions and their fears and experiences. Such a scene of human desola- dion and destruction has not been witnessed in New York for many a day—if, indeed, ever—and it 1s to ve sincerely hoped may never again occur in our amide, IN THE DEADHOUSE attached to the Morgue a number of plain pine board coffins lay piled up, some occupied with Lie Dodies of victims of the explosion and some waiting Jor occupants, Among the victims that bad been recoguized una wat had cither been removed tor burial yesterday by frienas or remain there = awaiting Coroner Keenan's permit were the following named, most of Whom, We may remark, Were pubhsved in the HERALD yesterday morning, but asthe names were in many cases misspelled, aud the ages aud occupations and residences of many Were unknown or were not ascertained at the ume, we reproduce them here, with such additional Anformation as could be gleaned yesterd: Jonn £., German, 3.2 Tenth avenue, New Yors. On their faces hupe and fear, plainly marked, struggled for the mastery, “Hope, eternally springing up,” buoyed up their ANGUISH-STRICKEN HEARTS and filled them with the sweet consoling thought that mayhap those they sought escaped while others had been doomed. On the countenance of others the fear of finding thelr darlings was legtbly written, Then again, to thelr shame be ft recordea, nought but idle morbid curiosity had attracted others to this scene of horror, Into the Morgue went the crowd of old and young, gray-headed men and aged women, men in the prime of life and girls scarce past their teens, Asa friend would be recognized among the bodies loud waliings would break forth; muttered exclamations } of grief and terms of endearment would fell from the lips of a father, who exerted all bis powers of manhood to hide his grief; a broken-hearted wife or mother would give loud vent to her grief and call in agonized terms for one word in response from her darling oue, now cold and stiff in the embrace of death. As 8001 an the bodies were recognized they were removed to the dead house aud yard ana enclosed in the RUDE PINR COFFINS, bow stained with the blood which had dropped from the gaping wounds of more than one previous tenant. In this yard the seenc was harrowing tn the extreme. Friends and relatives who had not yet seen the remains, recognized already by some member of the family, sought eagerly among the collins piled up there ior the remalas of some relae uve or friend, When their tremulous hands, removing the cover, disclosed to view the familiar features of the one they had last seen in the full possession of health and vigor, the sobs of hardy men and the shrieks of women filled the air and caused strong men whose natures had become hardened by successions of sad sights to turn their heads away and wipe off the unaccustomed inoieture from their cheeks, Some of the bodies were calm and placid look- ing, seemlagly sleeping, save for the death foam unwiped from their lips, while others were fear hls scarred and burned, some almost past recog+ nition, As the two bodies of Louisa Elsasear, aged four years, and her brother George, aged fiiteen years, Were picked out from among the othera their uncle and several other relatives linng tenderly the baby, over their bodies, particularly that ot web Was sadly borned, and IN LOVING ACCENTS calied them, “Louisa, mein Loutse and then the utterance becam wrth tears, and as their frames shook with the silent, deep-seated grief, fo strongly marked upon their honest German faces, will not soon ve forgotten by those presen fently the warden, Mr. Brennan, answered all the anxious questions propounded to bim; kindly his brother, Mr. Louts T. Smith and Annie Smith, @ child of nine years or thereabouts, Pen cannot depict or convey an idea of the uncer. tainty 80 plainly to be seen upon thelr conntenances as, under the direction of some kind-hearted em- ployé, they harredly sought the hospital wards, trusting that they might there find.tne other tw In one of the wards, tox: Hn the bed, swathed in cooling bandages, found the Mitte infant of nine months, but Smith, could not se found. fh heir ancertainty ave Way to dread despair, and with “hearts bowel down by weignt of woe” they left to seck tidings of him elsewhere, Tre Coroner (Keenan) held an inquest in the morning, and, afier the jary had viewed the dead bodies, @ number of burial permits were granted, Studweli, Augt., single, No, 5 Carine street, York, tigho, Amelia, No. 6 Lewis street, New York, ‘West, Mary ©,, 164 Sackett streei, Brooklyn. At ten o’clock last night some thirteen coffins yet remained im the dead-house yard containing remains of the Vicims, which will probably be removed to- day. They had been recognized by their friends, but the permits not having been obiamed from the Coroner they could not then be removed, The scene at the Morgue and dead-bouse yester+ day—taking the testimony of the police and others whose eyes have often rested upon death in nearly every form, taking into consideration the number of bodies, their ages and the feariul manner of their heen is one of the most fearful ever witnessed the city, IN BELLEVUE HOSPITAL.
