The Alleged Perjury of Naval Officer Laflin. Working Into an All-Night Session—A Lawyer Skulking Away—Cantankerous Witnesses and a Wearied Judge—Acquittal of Laflin. Herainr, N, Y., July 9, 1871. At ten minutes past six o'clock last night the triab | of A. H. Latin, Naval OMicer of the port of New | York, for alleged perjury, was called on in the Herki- mer County Court of Oyer and ‘erminer, in this town, beiore Justice Dooilttie and associates. In, my despatch of friday last sent the geveral facta as clatmed by tue parttsans of both sides of the | affair, embracing also a sketeh of the nature of thes case, which revealed a very much mixed state of facts or assertious, The case was taken up at the | late hour above stated in consequence of the delayy occasioned by the closing of a murder trial which had preceded tt, and partly with a view to finishing! | up at once the business of the term, no other case} | remaining to be tried at this sitttag. In my previous despatch I stated that three of the attorueys who had defeuded the civil eatt brought by Byrom Lafiin against the Hartmans, for the recovery of the North Carolina bond, which was the origin, of this mudule, bad appeared before the Grand Jury and testifled, and that upon their evidence the indictment against A. A. Ladin, charging the com~ mission of perjury, Was mainly based, These three; attorneys wero J. A. and A. B. Steele and Morrig Fikes, When the case was called District Attorney Mills asked that the name of Josiah A. Steele should be. called, he having been airealy summoned as & wit ness. Due proclamation was at once made by the: | erter, but Josiah did nu: respond, and tne Court or- | dered an attachinent to issue against him. It is but Proper tosay that J. A. Steae had for hours pre« vious been searched for and couid not be foand, and now loomed up the probability of a fizzle in the prosecution. Steele had oeea the prominent wit- | ness belore the Grana Jury; he wasa lawyer also, | and knew the value of prompt attendance of wit | nesses, but was nowhere to be fouud., He was evi« dently sk lking away, and merited all the abuse which his absence evoked. District Attorney Mills then arose and made a very brief opening address, stating that the case was an unusual one, required careful consideration, and it | struck him thatit would be well fur tae jury to con- { siaer what they had todo, He hoped that all inti- Mations or intimdations thruwa out upon elther side would prove futue and void, aid he propused, so (ar as he was able, to do his duty m a candid and tmpartial manuer., He desired all extraneous Mata ters aud opinions to be laid aside, und that the jury’ would do tnetr duty stric dy accordiog to their ouths. He then gave # brief resus of the lacts as alieged, | aud which he intended to prove, und ussed leave Wo introduce as documentary evideuce the judgment roll in the civil action tor the recovery of "he bonds The evidence Was adinited, aud Morris Fikes was culied as tho firat witness.
