IN MEMORIAM. ‘A Superb Monument to General Delavan, the Revolutionary Hero of Westchester, ITS DEDICATION YESTERDAY Yesterday will long be remembered by the rest- Gents of the hills and valleys that line the eastern ‘bank of the Hudson near Tarrytown ag the consum- mation of an event that ts destined to commemorate (the virtues of the dead so jong as the hills absorb the nectar from the lips of the clouds and the grand old river flows musically seaward past their base, treceiving fresh accessions continually from the bub- ‘Ditng ril!s that skip out in uncheckea gladness from the cliffs and rugged border. The day witnessed the dedication of, perhaps, the ‘Most costly, if not the most beautifully designed,. monument in the United States, that has just been erected in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery by Mr. Charles Hi. Delavan in memery of his fatner, General Dantel Delavan, who, with nine brothers, under Washing- ‘ton, “carried their ves upon their sleeves” in de- fence of tne cause of the patriots. While it ts more Antended to perpetuate the memory of a patriot and ‘devoted parcnt, 1t 1s also a monument to all the de- ceased and living descendants of the General, At ten o'clock the trim little steamer Thomas Collyer, which had been specially chartered for the conveyance of invited guests, arrived at the Thirty- fourth street pier, when a large number of guests and friends of the family embarked, Among the gentlemen present on the boat, and subsequently at ‘the dedication, were Colenel Fred. A. Conkling, J. L. Douglas, of the Merchants’ Insurance Company; Adjutant General Storms, James M. Cross, ex-Com- ‘Missioner Wiliam %. Cobb, Justin A. Bliss, William. Pease, Captain Gardner, Colonel George W. McLean, of Harlem; Dr. F. E. Bailey, George W. Lent, N. 8. Bates and Ed. L. Driggs. PORM BY GEORGE P, MORRIS, The following lines, by tue late General George P. Morris, upon the death of his friend, General Danie! Velavan, after lis death, are beautifully ap- propriate aud touching:— Let not a tear be shed, Of urier give not a woken, Although the silver thread ‘And golden bowl be broken A warrior lived—a Chrissian died; Sorrow's forgotten in our pride. Go, bring his battte blade, His heitnet and his plume, And be lis trophies latd Beside him sa the tomb, Where tiles of time-marised veterans come With martial tramp and mutifed drum. Give to the earth his frame ‘To moulder and decay; But not bis deat! ‘That canot pass 2 In youth, in manboee nd in age He diguilied his country’s page. Green be the willow bough Above the swelling mound Wher er In Thy epitaph, oh | Delavan, “God's nobiest work ah honest man!” Arriving at the dock, carriages conveyed the par ‘to the cemetery, away up among te hills, render memorabie by the peu aud sacred by the dust of America’s noblest son, Washington Irving. THE MONUMENT Bands on a high point of ground in the new ceme- tery, about one hundred feev north of Irving's modest tomb, and can be seen from the river very distinctly. The monument proper—irrespective of has four statues in Lhe angles of the enclosure, which ve been added recently, for the purpose of Increas- the general eifect of the main design—is a oo umn, of the Tuscan order. {ts proportions are simular to those ancieut exumples wuick were erect- ed during the earliest and most glorious period of the Romanempire. Coumensing trom the ground line, there are tirce massive granite bases (the entire mounwnent is granite), and resting on them 15 the p'inth The next feature 1s the Pedestal, or dit, in which there is a deviation | drom rule in the shape vi pilasters on each angie, ‘with eigat inverted burehes, to mark, no doubt, the Mortuary or uiemotial character of the design. § It 18 a very significant feature, characteristic and Dold. dn treatment and adnuradie in effect. On each of faces of the pedestal are raised shields, shed surfaces, contaming the inscriptions, one Lo the deceased General and the others to mem- uly. The cornice over the pedestal ts and remarkably eifective; In its draw. us, tnd yet in excellent proportion, The columi next ciaims attention, There the sculptor has revived @ pethou, that Was in use by such masters as Vignola and Ciambers, of plac- ing at intervals up the shaft cinctures, a band or Met encircltug the cotumm, In this pose appears to wood and most certatmly gives that air of Bondaty und weight which in an isolated column 1s generally found wanting. ‘Tho capital ts strictly in Accordance with the column. But to proceed to THE GREAT POINT OF ATTRACTION, that part which gives mdiviluality to the whole | structure, without which it 1s butan arehtitectural | effort. ‘lic eye rests in admiration of {he statue. Hewn out of an enormous block of white marble, and elevated filty feet above tue earth on the sum- mit of the column stands a majestic Hzare of Hope, asping the anchor (that eternal eublem of our fre, w& noble, powerful face, head weil poised on a graceful bust, standing in # firm, reliant Manner—itt (act the very beau ideal of Hope—visinie for miles up and down the Hudson—a very Pharos for the mariners of our grand river. The design and execttiou of the monument and sane is by John M, Momt, a well Known sculptor of this city. Messrs. Casont & Isola made in Italy tho four Deautuul life-size statues of Hope, Faith, Memory and Resurreciton that surround the moutument like guardian angels of te revered ashes that rest ve- neath. Messrs. Fisher & Bird execute. all the mar- Die and granite Work, of the finest workmanship, as | weilas Lie 8iX Combs that contain members of the Delavan tamity. The cost of the work was about thirty-five thousand dollars. In the cemetery near by is the Memorial Daich Reformed charch, erected An 1699, stl in a good state of preservation, to the pool of Wilch ur. INANE AND CONHURCLL, Wns seer, Wepnespay, June 28—6 P. | On ’Change to-day wheat opened steady, if not firm, but was unsettled toward the close, The cot+ tov market was Ormer and a fraction higher, MONEY EASY. The money market was easier, and lenders had some difMiculty in getting four per cent dor balances loaned on stock collaterals, Three per cent was the general rate insuch transactions, and two to three per cent the rates on government securities. The public are steadily realizing upon their stocks, and the money thus set free goes to swell the already large amount accumulated in this city. Just now the smaller operators are selling out, under the be- lef thatthey can buy back just as cheaply after the Fourth of July recess, and meantime save 60 much interest. Prime commercial paper 1s im fair request at 544 a6 per cent, with 43¢ a 634 per cent as the ex- treme quotations for strictly first class names, Foreign exchange was nominally unonanged on the basis of 1103, a 110%{ for prime bankers’ sixty day sterling, and 111 a 1113 for sight bills; but the market was not firm, and might, perhaps, be called weak at these rates. GOLD STRONG—112% A 1134/. The bullish sentiment of the Gold Room being encouraged by the large specie shipment this week there was a further rise in the price to 113%, as against 112% a 112%, which were the figures of the first sales this morning. Tho course of the market 4s shown in tho taple:— ib: LP. M, in the gold lean market the rates ranged from one per cent for carrying to flat for borrowing. The operations of the Gold Exchange Bank were as fol- lows:— Gold cleared. $27,008,000 Goid balances. 1,218,965, Currency balances. 1,882,726 The specie shipment was indefinitely reported as ranging from $351,000 to $420,000, The sum of $400,000 1s bespoken for shipment by the Koln to- morrow. A special meeting of the Goid Exchange will be held to-morrow morning, at ten o'clock, for the pur- pose of electing a secretary, in place of Mr. Thomas P, Akers, who has been compelled in consequence of il! heaith to tender his resignation of that ofiice, to take effect July 1. GOVERNMENTS HIGHER. The governments list maintained its alliance with the gold premium and kept pace with the rise in the latter, prices this evening showing an tmprovement. of about 4 percent. The stock market opened heavy and dull, and to- ; Ward noon became weak, witn quite a serious de- cline in prices, A very uneasy feeling prevailed at the opening of the second session of the board, and @ small-sized panic seemed impending until the cliqnes renewed their almost exhausted eitorts and occasioned @ considerable rally in the subsequent course of prices. The weakest stocks to-day were among the “respectable,” dividend-paying railways, such as Lake Shore, Rock Island and Read. mg. Lake Shore dropped to 1063s; Rock Island to 10834 and Reading to 108% (ex dividend). The market was unsettled by this demorulization ana generally declined: In the coal stocks Consoll- dation fell to 35, but recovered to 3734. Later in the day the Ohio and Mississippi clique made a fresn move in their favorite, and, heedless of the fate of Rock Island, steamed the price up to 4634.
