i oad FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. WALL STRERT, } Tunspay, June 27—6 P. M. On 'Change to-day wheat was steady. The cotton market was lower unul toward the close, when it rallied slightly and closed firm. THE FOURTH OF JULY HOLIDAY. The Stock Exchange, by a vote of 297 to 38, de- cided to make Monday next, the 8d of July, a holl- day, and ordered an adjournment of business trom Saturday to the Wednesday following. The Gold Exchange adopted a similar resolution, and busi- ness in Wall street outside of the banks will there- fore be suspended during the interval between July 1 and July 5 This early action in the mat- ter was taken in order that the brokers May meantime conduct their transactions so that contracts shall mature before or after the holiday Aaterval. The banks and private bankers will be ‘under the necessity of remaining open on the 8d of July in order vo meet demands upon them in the or- ainary course of their business. The double holiday 1s well recetved, especially as the increasing dul- ness of the street leaves little rooth tor complaint on the score of prejudice to business needs. MONEY EASY, ‘The money market was easier, and among the brokers business was quite evenly distributed at ‘three to four per cent until towards the close, when there was a pressnre of balances at three per cent. ‘The government houses were fully supplied at two to three per cent. Prime commercial paper was quoted 4%¢ a 6 per cent discount. ADVANCE IN FOREIGN EXCHANGE, The diminishea supply of bills drawn against ex- ports of domestic produce, as well as the further scarcity of gold coim capable of profitable shipment Anduced a further advance in the rates for foreign ex- change. Double eagles now command a premtum ©f % per cent over fhesmaticr denominations of gold coin, known on the street as ‘chicken feed.” The fol- lowing are the quotations of bills on Europe accora- ng to the new basis of rates:—Sterling, sixty days, commercial, 110 a 11034; good to prime bankers’, 110% a 110%; short sight, 1107; a 11144; Paris, sixty days, 5.1644 a 5.15; short sight, 5.1134 a 6.10; Antwerp, 5.20 a 5.15; Switzerland, 5.1735 a 5.143% Hamburg, 36 a S644; Amsterdam, 40% a 4135; Frankfort, 40% a 413,; Bremen, 79a 7934; Prussian thalers, 715; a 72. It will be observed that Gnancial mtercourse with Paris has been resumed and that short and long bills may now be had by those wishing to remit to he French capital. GOLD STRONG—112#¢ A 112%. The advance in foreign exchange and the compar- alively large snipment of specie to-day induced a firmer feeling in the gold market, but led to very little activity. The market simply advanced an eighth per cent and there hed its own. ‘The govern- ment disbursements on account of July interest on the public dent have produced as yet no effect. Tne payments to-day amounted to $1,337,000, making a total for the two days of $5,337,000. The course of ry market is shown in tne table: AM. 118% 2 P.M 12% 20 A.
