10 SAENGERFEST.| Opening Concert at the Acad- emy of Music. MONSTER REHEARS\L AT THE RINK, Grand Reception at Liederkranz Hall Last Night. ‘The twelfth nattonal Sxengerfest of the Northeast ern Saengerbund opened formally last night with @ grand reception voncert, given by the very crome de ja créme of New York siuging societies, the Lieder- kranz and Sing Acafem'e and New York Saenger- bund, consisting of e ght hundred voices. A very large audience was present, the parquet and bal- wony being compietely fed and the greater num- Der of the boxes. THE PROGRAMME consisted of Mendelssoun’s “Hymn of Pratse,” soli by Mune. Lichtway, Mme, Becker and Mr. Wiliam Candidus, and tne chorus (maie and female) by the Laeaerkranz aud Sing Academie; coucerto for weln (opus 61, first movement), Beethoven, played by Dr. Leopold Damrosch; the “Batue iymn” from Wagner's “Rienzi,” sung by Mr. Can- @iiusand (he maie choras of the New York Saen- gerbund, and Lindpatnter’s Test Overture. A better performance of Mendelssohn's great work has never been given in this city, and tats was ac- @omplished in the face of the most serious obstacles, ‘Which, unhappily, had been overlooked by the Com- mittee of Arrangemeuts., The usual additional stage which Is erected On great occasions, when the ordl- mary Academy stage canuot accommodate the re- ~guired number of periormers, Was on hand, and from the foot of the proscentam arch to the edge of abis stage a large space was left occupied by empty benches alone, Lustead of closing the sides and the top of the sp: allotted to the singers and the Orenesira, as is aways done at Phitharmonic con- eeris, the co/isses Were drawa back and hea’ borders Ict down, as tf for an ordinary stage “set.” The orchestra was then massed AN FRONT OF THE CHORUS, many of the latier singing from behind the scenes. The eifect of this queer arrapgewent was that more | than half the volume of voice disappeared in the rezions above, where the scenic artist and the car- penters are supposed to dwell: another portion went into the various dressing rooms, and a very small proportion reached the audience. Even this was diluted still farther in Parsing trough the orches Were it not for the admirable skull of the conductor, » and the unerring me thorough musical training of the caorus, the conse- quences might have been disastrous to Mendels- COLA PAUR, soln and Wa orchestra, about forty in momber, aid its il, and gaye the intro- @uction with all spirit, expression aud nicety possible.
