The Newark Turnpike Free Bri Successful. For two years past a movement has been kept alive in Newark having for its object the abolish- ment of tolls on the bridge crossing the Passaic river between Newark and Kearny township. At the last session of the Legislature a measure was passed providing for the appointment of a set of commissioners with power to purchase the said bridge in behalf of the two counties of Hudson ana Passaic. The price asked for the bridge by the owners, the Camden and Amboy monopoly that was, was $106,000. The Commissioners regarded this ag an extravagant price. bat it was not till the holding of one the purchase was effected, The Reach Vanderpool, Nehemiah Pert s Wagenen, A. L. Dennis, Thomas b. Bray, c Martin aA. je Movement Scudder, Witiam H. McClave and Howell. Mr. Jonn Van Vorst, one of the commissioners, was absent. Mr. Van Wagenen, announced that the price agreed to be paid was only $70,000, ‘his Was agreed to, and all that is now to be done ts to get a deed from the monopoly owners. This accomplished the oridge will pass Into possession of the two counties and be made free forever. The counties will equally share the cost some $10,000 has been expended repairing th bridge. The incoine from it was about $15,000 per annum, Accoraing to this the comnussionors made a close bargain. ATTEMPTED ROBBERY AT WEEHAWKEN, N. J. Two of the Thieves Captored. On Saturday afternoon a youth, named Spencer Green, accompanied by his brother, crossed on the Weehawken terryboat from New York, and were wandering through Weehawken, when three noto- rious characters, named John Bogardus, Joha Shaw and Paddy Murphy, accosted them, and proceeded to pull the gold buttons from their breasts, Green drew forth @ pistol to defend himself, but Murphy wrested it from him. At tnis juncture Constable Donahoe — arrived, and arrested Bogardus and Shaw, whom he handeufed. He then pursued Murphy, when the latter opened fire on him with the pistol, but the bullets missed their aim. Donahoe also fired, but without effect, vothat Marphy escaped. The other two robbers were taken neiore a justice of the peace and com- mitted to qwait trial. Murphy is a well known des- perado, who has speut most of his time in Jersey prisons. DRY GOODS MARKET. The dry goods market has been fairly active during the past week, the advance in coiton goods not pre- venting a very general distribution, For woollen goods there has only been mocerate inquiry, many buyers believing that there will be lower prices as the season advances, a belief not shared in by manu- facturers and agents. COTTON GOODS. The market 1s firm, with no surplus in agents’ hands and @ good trade doing by jobbers. Fine grades of bleached sheetings and shirtings are tn fair movement, but are not as active asthe lower grades, many of these being very scarce. Waut STREPT, Sunpay, June 18, 1871, THE TRADE OF THR CITY. The summer dulness has set in upon most depart- ments of city trade, although peculiar circumstances | have occasioned considerable activity in some branches, as for instance in the cotton market, Which has been the scene of pretty large transac- tions, based upon the anticipated shortness of the growing crop. So far as trade in general 1s con- cerned it seems as if it were undergoing & process of concentration at particular seasons. In olden times, before the telegraph and railroads gave us prompt communication, business was spun out over the whole twetve months, Bus now the buyers all come in a crowd tn the spring and tn the fall, make their purchases and go home. Their goods are forwarded after them, the merchants have afew months of intense activity, the packing of goods often extending far into the night, and then all is over until the next season, Something Of this is also beginning to be a regular thing tn THR WALL STREET MARKETS. In the spring there 1s a general demand for stocks. The season is one in which people buy, When all the purchases are made the stock market becomes dull, With the advent of fall, when money is re- quired for moving the Southern and Western crops and for active use in mercantile pursuits gen- erally, the idie capital employed at the Stock Exchango 1s withdrawn, and the selling period for stocks arrives, Doubtless the community are to be congratulated for tits flood and ebb tide in business, ‘The division of the seasons makes the summer a holiday, which can be beneficially avatied of for the recruitment of the health of those who, with the peculiar zeal of American business men, Would toil incessantly were their business enough to keep them constantly engaged. The week on the Stock Exchange and tn Wall street generally has been one of great dulness, the natural tendency to inactivity being assisted by the withdrawal of many dealers to the series of races at Jerome Park, Many brokers complain that the dulness was as great as they have ever experienced. Prices, as a result of this lack of interest in the market, gradually weakened, and the decline in some instances was quite marked. Taking the active speculative list the decline ranged from one to four per cent. The course of the market tempted operators on the short side of the account, but these were conducted with great timidity, owing to the unusual ease and abundance of money ant the reputed power of the combinations interested on the “hull’? side. In fact, the “short? interest betrayed its anxiety at the close ol the week, when, under a general demand for stock to cover contracts for de- livery, prices rose one-half to one and a half per cent, The gold market, after a faint prosecution of the “bull” movement alluded to last week, relapsed tnto duiness also, and is now without any speculative interest beyoud what exists on mercantile account, the “twisting” of which was avowedly the object of the recent “bull’ effort. Government bonds showed considerable animation toward the close, on account of the approach of in- terest day. Many European investors make it @ rule to convert their coupons into bonds, and each | Interest perlod shows, therefore, a good inquiry for this Investment, The Southern State bonds were active ana higher in the Tennessees, which advanced to 73, but were otherwise only steady, but strong. Money was easy, in face of a large demand from the rural districts, in connection with the market- ing of the “wool clip.’? The market for comme: cial paper was quiet, with prime names quoted 4}; a 6 per cent discount, ‘The early manipulation of the gold market un- settled and lowered the foreign exchanges; but, on the disappearance of this influence, sterling ad- vanced and closed 110% @ 110% for prime bankers’ sixty day bills, and 110%, a 110% for sight. THE BANK STATEMENT. The weekly statement of the assoctated banks proves quite favorable, thanks to the pool in the Gold Room, who, by repressing the shipment of specie the past week, leit the banks with a good exhibit in the way of reserve, The gain in legat tenders and specie amounts to about $2,000,000, and as the set-off to this is only twenty-five per cent of an increase of about $1,300,000 1n liabilities, the surplus reserve of the banks is increased $1,716,404, leaving them with & total of $16,684,312 In excess of the reserve requirea by ‘aw to be kept on hand. ‘The statement compares with its predecessor as fol- June 10, June 13,810, ns $203,134, ssa Specie 12,716,153 Circulation. 0,740,411 Deposits + 241,894,336 Legal ter 70,410,441 The variations from last week were as follow: rease In deposits, Increase in legal tendet LATEST PRICES OF GOVERNMES The following were the closing street prices of government bonds on Saturday evening;— United States currency sixes, 115% @ 115%; do. do., 1881, registered, 1143 @ 114%; do. do, coupon, 117}, @ 117%; do, five-twenties, regis- tered, May and November, llz% @ 112%; do. do., 1862, coupon, d 1124 @ 11234; do. do, tes do. do., 11244 a 112 do. do., 1865, do, do., N26 112%; do. do., registered, January and July, ice a 111%} do. do., 1865, conpon, do, 143% a 114%; do. do., 1867, do, do., 1Lis @ 114%{; do. do., 1868, do. do., 114% & 114%; do, ten-forties, registered, 1097 & 1110's; do. do., coupon, 11014 a 110%.
