In tue orief statements herein given of the powers and duties of this Board it wil be seen that the Commissioners cole more closely iu coutact with the great body of taxpayers than does any otuer ve- partment. Witn the closing of the vovxa, and the final action of the Comumuis- sioners upon Wwe applications, the Board consiver their responsibility for assessments, except in che cases Wiere remonstrance has been formally made, as pracucally atanend, For four montbs tie work is open to public inspection, and at the end of that riod so much of the Work as has not been objecred jo has, in eifect and in fact, been ratilied and con- firmed by the public. At the date of this report it ts !mpracticable to state the results of the assessments Jor 1871, inas- much as the books Were not ciosed until tae 40th of April, und several nuudred applications for revision mude during the last week yet remain to be cou- sidered by the Board, This ay is reudered more onerous for the present year by the fact that tie number of uainea upon the personal rolls has been materully increased. The strawberry crop, which was almost a failure from the drouth, has improved wonderiully since Saturday's rains and will yleld fairly, Prices can- Not, however, go as low a3 they have done in pre- vious years. Raspberries will be abundant and cheap this year. They can be grown for halt the price per quart that strawberries cost, and while sirawberries have for years been sold too low for profit raspberries have been quite high enough. We expect to seea change now and have cheap raspberries for a series of years, white strawberries will be dearer. The raspberry crop is much surer ina dry season than strawber- tiles, aud this year will be very abundant. — Cherries are generally a light crop m and around Rochester, though some trees are quite full, and there wili probably be enough for @ moderate’ con- sumption. Blackberries have never been so plenty and cheap in this market as they will be this year. The tender varieties, such as the Lawton, were not injured by the winter, and there are many plantations of Kil- lauuy and eavy Wilson which are never injured by the severest cold weather, There will be very few apples. The abundant blooming on some Orchards has been followed by no fratt, and the crop will be very hight. The May raius washed the polien of the biows at the time the fruit should ser, Some varieties of pears were injured in the same Way, While otners have set very abuadanily, Tne pear crop generally pro- muses well, We do not hear of any peaches, Tho trees west of the river which blossomed partially seem vo have set littie or no fruit. Quinces have set the heaviest crop we have ever seen, and quinces and pears will partly take the Place of our missing apple and peach crops, WAVAL INTELLIGENCE.
