DROORATION DAY, An effort was made in the Stock and Gold Dx- ehanges to procure an adjournment over Toesday, out of respect to the cer emonies of Decoration Day, but the proposition was not agreod ta TH NEW LOAN, A telegram from Washington states that the Seere Naty of the Treasvry bas not as yet accepted, ana probasly will not accept, the recent oter of New York bankers to take $130,090,000 of the new Joan, the conditions attached to the offer belag deemed Mncompatible with the public interests, The sub- scriptions to the new loan reporied to-day amount to $202,000, MONEY THREE TO FOUR PER CENT. The money market was a shade more active, aud &@ jarge namber of loans were made at four per cent, particularly among the stock houses, The Dusiness of the day must be qvoted as done at three Yo four per cent on miscellaneous securities and at Urree per cent on governments ‘There isa steady in jutry for first class paper, and strictly prime gia are current at five discount, wih 4) percent as the range of quo- ms for all that comes within the designation of ‘prume.”? We think the policy of selling a larger amount of gold 4n proportion to bond purchases a step in the right direction, particularly at this season, Mr. Boutwell ‘will doudtiess see the correctness of the theory that the snccess of the new loan depends more upon the obliteration of the gold premium than upon the ab- normal process of advancing government bonds by forced parchases of them in the open market. The programme as announced in detail from the Sub- ‘Treasury 18 as follows:— BIDS FOR GOLD, + $2,000,000 + 1,000,000 000,000 1,000,000 1,000,000 + $7,000,000 « $1,000,000 1,000,000 1,000,000 1,000,000 seseeeeeeee $4,000,000 GOLD DULL—111 §¢ A 11175. ‘The gold market was unsettled ona light amount of business, tne speculative sentiment being at fault as to the effect of the Treasury programme for June, By a very inverse process of reasonimg it was at first argued that the smaller purchases of bonds would ‘ccasion a decline in them abroad and bring some of them howe. On this idea gold opened at Thursday, Weanesday, June 7. Weds rere 111%, but declined to Jit. reacting finally 90 111%. As may be inferred, the bulk of business Was at ill. The higher price since Saturday is also attributable to an apprehension of more active mouey tn London, now that the civil war iu France Seems coming toanend. The stock market was, uuu! alter midday, much of a repetition of its career tora week past—that fs, three or four principal stocks were strong and Duoyant, the rest being irregular and generaily weak. Lake Sho: Reading and Rock Island Steadily advanced to the highest prices of the sea- fon, buteverytidng was subjected to a sudden and sharp decline in the afternoon by a Washington telegram, stating that Mr. Boutwell had taken the question of the tax on the »ew York Central scrip dividend into hts own hands and ordered its mme- miate collection. The outsiders began to sell upon this tutelligence, and, as the brokers were generally Glled with “stop” orders, the “break” was tntenst- fea by the further suics originating in this way. The cliques, who are not in a posi- tion to permit the market to adrift in fo a panic, rushed to the rescue and fallied their specialities back to about the best points Of the day. Rock Isiand tumbled from 1214; to 119%, but was carried up to 121% again. Reading, in the fame period, fell from 119%; to 117%, and was ral- lied nearly one per cent before the close of the day. Lake Shore, which bad gone aloug quite swim- Wingly to 115, was also overtaken by the shower, @nd dropped to 1135;, but recovered to 114. Pitts- ‘burg had been weak from the beginning, and at one time declined to 119. Westeru Union was steadily forced down to 67%; before the general decline com- menced, but held its own afterwards. New York Central faltered, but was taken in hand, probably by the Commodore's orders, with a view to defeat those who speculated upon the Washington Gespatch. Coroner Young yesterday hela an inquest at 661 Ninth avenue over the remains of Mr. Joseph Cc, Egbert, who committed suicide on Sunday afier- nocn. Deceased had been subject to fits of melan- choiy for two months past, owing to disappoint- ments in business matters, On Sunday a friend called to see deceased, who excused nimself by saying he would 0 to his room on tho tnird floor and dress, Socn afterwards two pistol shots were heard, and Isaac L, Egbert running up stairs found his brother lying on the floor, with blood issuing from a woun-. in the right temple and also from another wonnd in the leit breast, His brother asked Joseph why he did it, when he replied, “I Will not stand it any longer,”’ and in a few minutes aiterwards he expired. Deceased had held an im- portant position ina large commercial house, but leaving it, accepted w situation ina bank. He was twenty-six years of age and a native of New York. POISONOUS PRATTLERS, For two or three yeors past Mrs, Mary A. Hand- such, a very respectable woman, forty years of age and a native of this city, has been in poor health, and at intervals paritally delirious, On Saturday she died suddenly, at No, 224 West Twenty-fourth street, after which two foolish and perhaps ma. Helous tenement house women circulated a re- rt to the effect that Mrs. Handsuch had een poisoued by one of her relatives. These idle tattlers even went to the Sixteenth precinct Police station and made a circumstantial report of vhe Pricene poisoning, which was subsequently sent to Coroner Keenan, who repaired to the house and made an lnvestigaiion, It was then learned that the lady had died of congestion of the brakn, and that there was not the most remote reason for the circulation of a groundless and cruel report, calculated to deeply wound the feelings of mourn- ing relatives and friends. KU KLUX WANTED IN WESTCHESTER, A journeyman baker named Thomas Holt was ar- raigned before Police Justice Ferguson, at Mount ‘Vernon, Westchester county, yesterday, on a charge of having perpetrated a gross outrage on the person of Sarah Connover, a little colored girl eleven years ola, Both the ee and the accused, tt seems, were employed at the same place and occupied rooms under one roof, According to the testimony Holt entered the girl's sleening apartment, where he bra- tally committed the oifence charged, and which was fully aia y medical testimony. The ac- cused was committed to the county jail to await ihe action of the Grand Jury. CiTY GOVERNMENT. OFFICIAL.
