These enthusiasts have never paused to conside once dispel their delusions and confute their fables, The case now before us OUgit to serve as a lesson of the folty ane fatuity of this habit of trusting to idle Lraditt’ avd the inventions of imaginative and designing concoctors of sensational stories, rather tian to the authentic facts of his- wry. If the believers in the hidden treasure of Laiitte had taken the trouble to consult these facts, which have been established by judicial investiga- ons and are attested by old residents contemporary of the events and characters referred to, they would have jearned that neither Lafitte nor the men asso- ciated in his enterpriseiwere ever pirates, or that they ever accumulated any treasures which they found it necessary to bury. They will find by ex- amining the records of the United States Court in this city that in 1$12, after a full and fatr trial, Jean Lafitte and his associates were acquitted of all pirauical acts or purposes, and that it was shown Liat they were engaged only in the legitimate busi- hess of capturing on the high seas’ the vessels of Spanish citizens, under a commission and let- ters of marque from the repuolie of Colom- bia, then at War with Spain. They were not pirates m auy sense, and Jean Lafitte himself was not even as:alaring man, but an illiterate blacksmith, who kept lis Jorge at the commer ol Bourvon and st. Ann streets. li is further Known that all the property nequired by Whe ugsoclation of which Lafitte was the city agent, was seized by the United States and con- sumed during the military operations in ine defence Of this city in 1814 and 1815, The men engaged with Lativte were marched fromthe prison to Jacksou’s lines to man the batteries, and these ren- dered most valuable services, When the war Was over they were released, with the thanks and commendation of Generat Jackson, of course, belug now free, they would have repaired to the secret deposits ot their spoils amd recovered the same, If any such existed. Jean Lafitte himself, aiver the war, having lost everything, engaged iu a littie shipping business tn the gulf, and was drowned at sea im the wreck ofa small vessel of which he was a super- cargo. Others of his associzies remained nere in — humble positions, and = were always poor.
