[From the Syracuse Courier, May 13.] A Hebrew named Edward Kartschake, of Mil- waukee, converted his property into money in that city with the imtention of changing his base of Ps mgt and going into business in this city. For his property he received a letter of credit, given by Marshal & lisley, of Milwaukee, for $10,000 in gold. He also had £400 in greenbacks, a note for $800 in Prussian money, and another note of 809 marks banco, Hamburg money. These were all placed together in a pocket on the inside of his vest, where it would naturally be supposed they would be safe, He came, accompanted by his daughter, by way of Suspension Bridge, and when they reached Kochester they saw five men of sus- piclous appearance come in the car, and they re- Inalned there until just as the tram reached’ this ctly (about eight last evening), when they made a pretence of iooking for their baggage, as thongh they Wished to get off here, They first crowded around the daughter, but of course did not find their Daggage, for they probably had none, when they went to the seat where the father was sitting and crowded around him, They insisted on his rising so that they might find their baggage, and then immediately decamped, Soon alter the old gentieman found they had cut a button from his vest, and taken the pack- age from the inside pocket where it had been stowed, A despatch was immediately sent off stop- Pp Dg payment on the letter of credii. On the train on Which this man and his daughter were passen- gers (the 8:15 P. M. train), a large number of roughs were returning to New York irom the Mace-Copurn fizzie, and these men were undoubtedly among that gang. The total amount taken would be nearly $15,000 In. greenbacks. A despatch was sent to Utica by Chief Davis to the chief of potice in that city, giving the facts and requesting the arrest of the parties, About twelve this morning a despatch was received from the chief of peice in Utica, say- ing:—‘*Have got your man; will hold him subject to your order,’? . A Party Wrecked in the Lake. The Buffalo Courier relates the following interesi- Ing episode in connection with the prize ight that didn’t come off:—Some time during Wednesi night the steam tug Shoecrait left for the scene of the conflict with a party of about fifty on board, How mauy of the crowd hailed from this city, and how many there were from abroad, we have no means of knowing at our present writing; but we incline to the opinion that there were not many Builalo men in the party, There was whiskey enough among the crowd to keep them in the best Of animal spirits through the night and far into the morning, and it was freely used. When oft Port Maitland, Canada, the yacht was swamped and the party came near meeting a watery grave. The story of their rescue has not come to ‘us circumstantially, \it they got ashore alive and walked to Dunvilte, where they learned that tae fight had suddenly come to a close, ‘They waited for the Grand Trunk watn for this city and got aboard as it came along. The conductor in due time demanded their iares, and the response from the crowd came in the shape of a number of re- voivers, Which were placed in uncomfortable prox imity to the conductor's face, some of the crowd saying, “Oh, yes; we'll pay our fares.” The mob next proceeded to take possession of the entire train, causing much {right among the passengers and de- meaning themselves as disagrecably as possible. ‘The conductor was powerless, and had no discretion but to carry the riotous crew to this cliy, where they arrived last evening. It would a pleasant task tochronicie the arrest and punishment of every rough who was brought bitner on the train. The Shoecralt was seized by the revenue oMecrs at Vort Maitland on suspicion of being a smuggler. How the Party Amused Themselves After th Fight Was Over. {From the Buflalo Courier, May 13.) The scenes while the rougls were embarking after the fight bad been broken up are worthy of an ex- tended description. At least a thousaud “fellows of the baser sort’? ape the greater part of the afternoon at the mouth of Hay Creek. This empties into the lake tbrorgh a gulley, the banks on each side being about forty feet high, and it can be ima- gined by those who have any acquaintance with the class of gentry congregated there, that considerable roughness was mduiged in, It took the form of “skylarking,” mainly, but the play was of a nature approaching the serious. A number of Kegs of lager beer, Which some enterprising geniuses had carried to the scene of the fight, were brought back to this spot. When they reached the top of the path leading down the ully they were set rolling, and acquired Considerable velocity be- fore they reached the bottom, As they came spin- ning through the crowd many a man was bowled down unawares, but such litte accidents as these were cousidered part of the fun, and, in fact, it be. came so funny tha, alter the contents of bome of the kegs had got into the heads of the leading Troughs, other Kegs were carried up the side hull and sent down for sport into the crowd, Late in tne aiternoon tt was necessary to keep a sharp eye out for these projectiies. Colonel Tisdale was bowled down by one of them, and while down reheved of some of his portable property, and the melanchot, part of the story is that 1t was done on purpose, still worse indignity thau this was putupon him by one of the roughs, Who snatched his swora from ity scabbard and threw it into the lake, where this sym- bol of the authority which put a stop vo the fight now reposes, We learn that during the passage back to Erlo the majority of those outside the Ulteves’ rings were gone through will THE TREATY AND THE FISHERMEN.—The Cape Ann (Mass.) Advertiser comes out very stronwiy agalust the treaty, on the grounds that the fishing interests are sacrificed. Jt says:—Ky providing a free market for the provincial fishermen we simply transfer the fishivg business to the haus of loreigners, and punish our own fishermen for com- plaiing when they have been maltreated by Cana- dian omciais, Whatever may be the interests of fish speculators, the producing element will be, vy such a treaty, sacrificed. The expense of materiais in the construction of vessels, of manning and fitting them, costs far more on the American than on the Canadian side of the line, caused tn a great degree by protective tarid¥; consequentiy, instead of fishermen flocking from the maritime provinces tu man our vessels and become citizens, we shail nnd American capital employing these men at their own ports, and gradualiy sapping tue foundations of the American lishing business, The provincial fisherman, in his soit wood schooner, but at jess than one-half the cost of the American; the iish at his own doors, with light taxation and tree salt and the great Americau market free, will have such decided advantages as to defy competition. ‘That the United States will abandon her marine interests and that England will by every means foster hers is apparent in case this treaty ts adopted, 4 COPARTNERSHIeS.
