KU KLUX KLAN. ~ Fresh Outrages by the Craft in North Carolina. A Farmer Wounded and Eis Wify Killed in Cleveland Coun‘y—4 Man Whipped—An Old Nogro Riddled Wath Bullets—His Step- Gaughter Inhumanly Whipped-An- ether Negro Beatsa and His Arm Broken —Great Excitiment Among the Citizens. The counties of Cleveland and Rutherford have recently been the geene of some of the most barbarous deeds yet chronicled as heving been perpetrated by nese moss troopers and midnight assassins. In Cleveland, not ten days since, a party wearing the characteristic and hideous disguise of the klan, Which consists of a flowing white rove reaching nearly to the ankies, surmounted by a headdress of aspiral shape from the shoulders ypwards, terml- nating in a large, waving plume, with projecting dark colored horus on each side in front, a monster nose of agiariug hue, eyeholes marked with flery Innes and a mouth extending across the whole mask, dusplaying an enormous rew of teeth, appeared at the house of a farmer. ‘ihe door was knocked at, and ina sepulcural tone of voive he was ordered to come forth. Soon he appeared, followed by bis wife and daughter, when a volley was fired by the Klan, WoUndiuig the farmer, “a KILLING HIS WIFR, but fortunately missing his aaughter, About the same line another farmer was cruelly whipped, and tue members of the Klan engaged im this operation were identified by his daughter, and have since been arrested and held to bati for trial, It is alleged by some that these outrages were committed by pare ties from South Carolina, on which State the coun- Ues OF Cieveland aud Rutherford border; but this 4s hnmaterial, so long as the outrages continue, for whey are certainly perpetrated by and with ; the consent of te members of the orgamza- Vien living in the immediate neighborhood, Mf not by thetr actual decree and instracior Later iniormation from the counties ef FE nett, Chatham and Cumberland go to show the Ku Kiux are as active and Garg there as ever. No later than Lhursday last a large deiachment of Shem, wearing the usual regajia and insignia of the order, Went to wwe cavin of an aged negro named George Mathews, Without any superfiuous cere- mony the coluied patriarch—ior Mathews was over fiity years oli—was ordered to leave nis bed, and wath still less ceremony was dragged from his bat aud was fired upon, FIT BT BULLETS entering his body, whicn was thoroughly riddled, and he was lelt a corpse at ils own door. Not con- wt with this demoniacal outrage the incarnate nds then took Reila Mathews, tie step-dgughter ol the murdered man, and cruelly . WHIPPED for what cause ts not known, These latter facts have been tesiifled to befure United states Comn . sioner Shaffer, of this city, together with still anothe ouirage by the same band, Wiliam McLean, another negro, was INHUMANLY BEATEN the night following that upon weich Mathews was murdered, and his stepdaugliter whippea. McLean, when nearly half dead, managed to escape from the gang, one of his arms betng broken. None of these Parties have been arrested, their disguise being so complete as to batile recognition and subsequent ddentification. The citizens of the neighboriood, of all Classes and colors, have united to huntdown aud suinmarily punish tie murderers and outlaws, BOARD OF EDUCATION. Final Meetinz—Transfer of Old Stock to the New Department of Public Instruction. The King is dead: lye the King, The Board of Education is no more. It breathed Us last yesterday calmly and peacefully, and in the full possession of all its faculites to the last. But we Will not sing tts requiem, for on Saturday next It will rise again, renewed in vigor and reciothed in the garb of the “Department of Public Instruction of the City of New York,’’ as authorized by an act of ‘te Legislature, passed just before tts adjournment, All the members of the old Board were present at the meeting yesterday except Messrs, Brennan aud Palmer, Mr. Bernard Smyth, Chairman. After an | examination of the minutes of the previous meeting they were read and approved. The call for tins special meeting was also read and approved. Com- munications from trustees of several wards and others were read and referred to weir appropriate committees. Mr. Lewis then offered the following:— Resolved, That all resolutions, <order: school ofiicers, teachers, and communicatic ters of actlon or injury in an} power to the several standing i and they are hei d to the Department of Public Inatroction, with the same authority in respect thereto as if originated in that department. A report, which is to be-pre- sented to the Mayor, Was aunounced but not read, and could not be madé public until after its pre- fentation to that official. The business of the mecting having been fintshea Mr. Smyth arose aud said that the period of their existence as a Board of Education had expired. He returned thanks to his associates for thelr unl- form kindness, and said he would always cherish the remembrance 02 their courtesy toward hin. Judge Lane yesterday rendered a decision in the now notorious case of Murphy vas. Oliver, in which the Coliector, as president of the Griswold and Cor- nell Campaign Club, was sued by Brother Oliver for @ little bill of $250, on account of some printing done during the campaign of 186 The Judge decidea tn favor of the defendant, Murphy, on the grouna that the club was @ simple Suli—Judgo partnership and did not cone unde the legal provisions of the fet of 18% That act evidently contemplated joint stock and other unincorp orated associations owulng pro perty. Such associations could sue and be sued. But this club, though there had been an iugenioas attempt to show that the bills and gutter sulpes It possessed endowed it with the dignity of @ property owuer, Could not properly be said to livid Property, and was, therefore, beyond the meaning of the act, Jt nad also been proved that one of the plaintiffs, Mr. Oliver, Sr., was a member of the club; and there was conflicting testimovy as to whelher the other plaintif, Mr. Oliver, Jr., Was not @ member also. The case, therefore, fell ovtside the jurisdiction of the District Court, and became a case nity. Under these circumstances Judge Lane devided for the defendant, THE MACOMG'S DAM BRIDGE.
