THE NEW YORK CENTRAL RAILROAD SEIZ- URE IN ROCHESTER. {From the Rochester Democrat, April 18.) A few days ago Sheriff Campbell levied on twenty- four locomotives and other stock in the round houses and machine shops of the New York Central Ratlroad at Brown street. For a day or so this rafl- road embargo did not materially interfere with the operations of the company, but yesterday it was found necessary to use the locomotives, either for the trains or to make repaira on them. and the levy stood in the way, As the result of this condition of afairs numerous despatches were sent to and from headquarters, and it is reported that Mr. Gould, master mechanic of the shops, received orders about one o'clock yesterday afternoon to break the locks in deflauce of the Sheriff. The matter went so far as that one of the mechanics was about procuring his toois for the work. The Sherif naturally became alarmed, and prepared to summon his posse comi. taius to resist the proceeding, Before the crisis came am order countermanding the previous one was issued, and all was again quiet. Sheriff Camp- bell took three members 0. the police force with him to theshops about five o’clock to assist him in the performance of his duty. Jatior Beckwith ba tables aud deputy sherits were there also, guarding the property. The Sheriff had placed a chain and lock on the machinery by which the turn tables are moved, and every locomotive in the two round | houses e unable to move. One of the locomo- lives, ” was on the straight track, and, fearing that some adventurous railroader would undertake to ran the “machine’’ off, the wheels were chained and locked to tue framework. Of course, It Was not the slight links of chain that held the trop horse in place; for one might as eastiy tie a thunderbolt with a’kite string as to resist the movements of the ponderous | puter with such a trinket. Law, however, must prevail over inanimate tiungs, as well as such a live corporation as the Central, and the chains and locks were mere shadows of the’ authority bebind them. After consultation with George J. Whitney, a di- rector Of the road, and Edward Harris, the attorney, the Sheri? consented that three passenger engines | shoaid go out of the shops, with the understanding that their places would be taken by three oth and those that were let free on returning to houses couid not be moved again without the order of the Sherif, It ig due to Mr. Whitney and Mr, Harris to say that they assured the sheriff that ne Woald not be interfered with in the exercise of his anthority until a settlement was had. It was stated the other day that Sherif’ Campbell had received security from the road; but we are in- formed that the security was merely nominal, and, im truth, worthless, He proposes now to held the property until he shall have recelved amp): arity in Fh ag bonds or cash to the amount of the Judginents, of suffalo, and other raflroad Mr. Torrance, efiicials were im town Just night, and it 13 said that they propose to secure the Shertif without delay. Thursday is advertised as the day of sale, when, if the difficulty is not settled so far as the county omeer is concerned, the locomotives will be seid uider the lamimer to the highest biader. Tue question is often asked why the ratlroad pro- perty In Buffalo was not levied on. The answer 1s that the Sheriff of Erie county 1s a pariner of Mr, Lanning, the attorney for the Central in that cit: and be would not te just the man to seize the pro- perty of the company. A severe thunderstorm, accompanied by heavy rain aud terrific gusts of wing Ried this district and raged with much violence from 4 till 6 this PM. With the exception of demo.ishing a few ciate shanties and levelling some trecs it did not cause any serious damage. They will probably proceed at r ight to-morrow, BELOW. Ship Aurora (Br), Uttey, from Hamburg (by pilot boat J W Elweil, No 7). Wiad at sunset N, light. Shipping Notes. ‘Phe Twenty-third street ferry vridge at Greenpoint is un- dergoing repairs, which it greatly needs, The iron ferryboat Fulton, deaigned for the Union Ferry Company and to be run on the Fuiton ferry, will be launched from the yard of her builder, Mr T F Rowland, Greenpoint May 10. The sister bot, Farragut, not quite #0 far advancod, ‘will be sent into the water about two weeks later. Mesre Laurence & Foulks, shipbuilder, have removed thetr business from the foot of North Firth street, Willtams- burg, to the foot of Noble street, Greenpoint, and are putting everything in pleasant order about the new place. The tug- boat intended to replace the Phoenix, destroyed in the lowez bay by the eavlustun uf Ler botler, te fast going up under the direction of this firm. She is in frame and will be pushed forward to speedy completion. She will be very strong, very able, and, hopes are entertained, very fast. The new boat is £6 feet length’ of keel, 100 feet overall, 21 fect breadth of beam and 10 feet depth of hold, The slips preparatory to building bridges, driving piling, &c, for the accommodation of the Roosevelt street ferry, are being dredged. The work o! removing the present houses will be commenced as soon as practicable, that the East Raver Bridge Company may begin excavating for the sinking of the New York caisson. Pier No 21 East river is being repaired, not pler Nol, as erroneously avnounced. The latter needs rebuilding. The undoubted success of the Suez Canal has served to make the world dissatistied with all the existing channels of commerce which are out of a straight line. It has acted as the spur to our government to connect the Pacific and At, Jantic Oceans by means of a ehtp canal across the Isthmus of Darien, which, it is to be hoped, will be commenced #0 soon as practicable after the surveying party now on the ground shall have decided upon a route, Other ship canal projects have been inspired by the success of the Suez Canal. One that may be prominently mentioned fs the opening of a continuous waterway from the Gulf of Lyons to the Bay of Biscay—a distance of 235 miles, Another enterprise of simi- lar nature is worthy of reference. It is for the severance of the Isthmus of Corinth, between the Guifs of Egina and Le- panto, to open a more cirect route for the trade of the Black Sea, Turkey, Asia Minor and the Grecian Archipelago, with the Mediterranean coast and Southern Europe, as well as for that portion of ft seeking other countries through the Straits of Gibraltar, shortening the distance to these points by seve- ral hundred miles. There is also another work of this kind spoken of, that being to connect the Baltic Sea with the German Ocean, with the view of escaping the risk of disns- ter attending the passage of vessels through the Skdger Rack and Cattezat, Marine Disnsters.
