Democratic State Convention im Ohio Junel, in Columbus, Louisville, Ky., 1s putting ina claim for the next Democratic Nationa! Convention. The Clevelana Herald asserts itto be a fact that a teaspoonful of salt taken in water and the same qnanitiy deposited in each stocking, next the vare feet, just as the chillis coming on, will effectually cure the fever and ague. It does not cost much to try the experiment, at any rate; but we think Con- gress ought to take the duty off salt, there will be such @ demand for the article in certain suburban localities. ‘The right of women to vote is soon te be tested in a United States court. Ex-Governor Denison (republican), of Onio, is out in favor of universal amnesty, The Chicago Republican wants every gambler in America to come to Chicago and ply his vocation. Perfect security and large profits guarauteed, New York can spare a few. General Thomas Ewing, Jr., says that he will not accept the democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor of Ohio, but will support the ticket. The Baltimore Amertcan states, on the authority of an intimate friend of Andrew Johnson, that the ex-rresident has gone back on the democratic party and declares himself a subscriber to the republican policy, and wants to bo taken into the party in fall standing. ‘The Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle very ‘properly thinks that the appointment by Congress of a committee to investigate the political and social condition of affairs in the South, to act during the summer vaca- tion, and to report daring the next session, cannot prove detrimentai to Southern interests and charac- ter, The Chronicle adds:—If the investigations are to be conducted with fairness, with the single de- sign of bringing out the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but tie truth, and free frem political proju- dice, with an eye solely to benefit the country by a frank, candid exposition, we ought to congratulate ourselves that at length a fair opportunity is afforaed Southerners to display the outrages—the enormous outrages—which have been perpetrated upon the people of the South, under and by virtuo of recon- struction and in the name of “loyalty,” LATEST PROM FRANCE. During the latter part of last week a rumer was circulated in the city to the effact that the Town- send’s Savings Bank, @ well established bank in the city, had become embarrassed and was about to sus- pend. Sy Saturday afternoon the rumor had guined a wide circulation, and yesterday morning the effect of it was to send @ large numoer of working men and servant girls to the bank at an early hour, The bank, which is in the best condition, immediately placarded a notice that it would remain open tillsundown to “receive and pay deposits.” Notwithstanding this reassuring notice many of the poorer depositors called for their money and received it, Fathers O’Brien and Hart called at the bank and assured many of their parishioners of the sound condition of the bank and deterred many from taking out their deposits. Others could not be persuaded. The bank remained open until sundown and paid ail who called for thetr funds. During the day Mr, Townsend, the president, received nuwer- ous offers Of assistance, all of which he declined. TELEGRAMS TO THE KEW YORK HERALD. ~~Toxpos, April 17, 1871. The subject matter of the proceedings and probable resulis and international {afuences of the Joint High Commission in Washiugton is canvassed still more earnestly by the people daily. The public press treats it as essential matter for Parliamentary consideration after the recess. The London Times to-day has a leading editorial upon the report as to the result of the labors of the High Commission, It says:—‘The case of the Ala- bama has always created a feeling of insecurity in England and has demoralized American politics. We hall the possible settlement, and’think that the arbitrators will acquit England of responsibility for the deeds of the Alabama,’’ The Times writer adds that the Alabama wes “partially fitted out at the Azores, and hence Portugal 1s liable to our expert- ence;” but the 7imes ts evidently not sanguine of an immediate settlement of the question, for it warns the British public that “it 1s very uncertain whether a treaty will be ratified by the American Senate." ‘avor—Movement sla eds.” LONDON, April 17, 1871. The public demonstration in Hyde Park yesterday, which was made after a due share of placarding on the dead waiis of the city in favor of the Paris in- surgents, was a failure in all the materials of an outdoor meeting—numbers, imdusivy, wealth and Freneh Kadicalism Out of ot the Li 2 had been notified to the people under the tile of “A Great Republican Demonstra- lion, to be held in Hyde Park on Sunday, April 16, in Honor of the French Commune.” A proces- sion, with bands aud banners, was to leave Fins- bury square at haif-past two o’ciock via Old street, Clerkenwell Green, Pall Mal and Piccadilly. Osborne in the chair. ‘The chair. | man, after speaking of the “lamentable state of France,” which be said “had been brought about by the determiuation of tyrants to crush the people in their struggle for fair representation and liberty,” dwelt on tie ciforts being made to stop the republi- can movement in England. He satd that “since Mr. Bentinck had m the House of Commons called attention to the movement there had been a system. of terrorism practised by the police towards the proprictors of houses where republican mectings had been held, The police had patd domictifary visits to these houses, and told the landiords that if they per- mitted the meetings fn future they would lose their licenses.” The speaker went on to say that there was “a determination oa the part of the people not to submit to tis iyranuy.’” The Weaiher—Proay 4 for the Tinrvest.
