SAILED. Steamship Java, for Liverpool; Colorado, do. Shipping Notes. ‘The steamboat America. of the Scnuyler line—the second of the season—will be sent to Albany to-night with a- large tow. ‘The steamer Russia was detained at Quarantine yesterday. Among her passengers the Healtn Ofiicer discovered small- pox—s sufficient reason for detention. ‘There is a cry in shipping circles that but few able-bodied seamen can be obtained for our mercantile marine. The reason given is that the usua) annual emigration of sailors from Eastern seaports to the Western lakes and rivers is following the opening of navigation in those waters, and thus that shipmasters are experiencing much diffoulty in making up their crews. Of course the seamen, badgered and kicked about asa football on the ocean, in many cases by captains whose hearts are barder than flint, catch at better ‘wages and lighter work whenever presented, and in many cases accept lesser sums rather than submit to arduous du- ties and the storms of the ocean, We are informed that sev- eral masters have been compelled to send to Boston within the past fortnight for seamen to complete their quotas, and during this time two or more ships have been detained in the bay for the same reason. The Fourth and Seventh wards of this city, where the greater number of seamen’s boarding houses are to be found, are now almost deserted by mari- ners. With the exception of steamboat hands and coasting men few sailors are to be found in their usual haunts, The ‘wages at this port for seamen are as follows:—To all ports to the eastward of the Cape of Good Hope, $28 per month, and two months advance; to the westward of Cape Horn, the same; to the Mediterranean, South America and West In- dies, $25 per month, and $80 advance; to Europe, &c. $30 per month, and one month’s advance; foreign vessels, $35 Per month; coasting voyages, $85 to $40 per month and no advance. This is a slight advance over previous rates, tho Increate baving taken place during the present scarcity. Marine Disasters. Suir HuDsoN.—The iron ship Hudson, (Br) Richardson, which left this portfor New Orleans on friday last, was found on Tuesday last almost a wreck, by the steamer Ash- land, off Chincoteague Bay.
