Ner was Western Union overlooked, the price of that stock being ad- vanced to 60%, which price they were willing tO pay at the very close of street business. The “bulls” in Union Pacific were also delighted by favorable reports trom the Senate committees, one of which concedes the right of the road to with- hold its interest on its bonds beyoad the filty per cent of goverument busiuess ana the dive per cent on the uet earnings, whtle the other advises the government to give ali its transpertatien to the Pacific railways. The former report emanates from the Judiciary Commitice, who seem to have been @itided by the legal rather than the equitable con- straction of the law which subsidized the Pacific roads. This reversal of the oplaton of the Attorney General communicated so much buoyancy to the stock as vo advance its price to 24. in fact, the the upward movement carried prices up about one per cont for almost ali the leading active stocks, the only exceptions being Erie and Reading, which were flat and negiected. In the miscellaneous shares Pacific Mail advanced to 45%, on a renewal of rumors that @ plan of co-operation with the Cen- tral Pacific Ratlread had been agreed upon, and only awaited the signatures of the contracting par- ‘ties to go into effect. The “bulls” seem to have waited for the signal of peace in Europe, the edect of which they count upen most confidently torestore the stock market to at least the position trom which At declined last summer on the outbreak of hostili- ties between France and Prussia. Criminal Carelessness of a Board of Health Employe—A Woman Poisoned by Ualabelled Carbolic Acid—Frightfat Death Pangs—Ad. journment of the Inquest. For some time past the little son, three and a half years of age, of Bridget May, ate of No. 28 New Chambers street, has been sick with scarlet fover, and died on Tuesday last. ‘The funeral was attended on Thursday, and, after the return of the relatives to their desolate home a representative of the'Board of Health called at the house with some conce: trated carbolic acid to disinfect the clothes of the ceceased child and the premises generally. This dis- Infectant | was placed in a pint bottle, in which Mrs, May had kept brandy for medicinal purposes; but the entleman from the Health Board carelessiy omitted to label the bottle as eontaining poison, and left, stating how the disinfectant was to be used. This bottle was placed on the window sill, with some other ones, and late in the afternoon Mra. May, according to fnstrucyions from Dr. Fredericks, in attendance upon her baby, also ill with scarlet fever, fet about making a milk punch tor the child, Not being aware that carbolic acid nad been Ieft in the window, Mrs. May took the bottle which she thought contained brandy ‘and poured three or four teaspoontuls Into a cup and made her milk punch, ‘Thiuking the liquor very strong and not fancying the odor arising from it, Mrs. May thought to take ‘a. dose herself before giving the medicine to the babe. Ac- cordingly she drank the whole of the mixture, which tasted so strangely as to remind her of the carbolic acid, and cailingto ler husband at work up stairs, asked him where it was, He replied that it was in a bottle standing on the window. May then exclaimed that she had drank @ dose of it; r which she was seized with burning paing in her mouth and stomach, which increased in violence. Mr. May, becoming alarmed, sent for Dr. Fredericks, who instantly responded to the call, but on reaching the house found the woman insensible and in spasms. Learning what Mrs. May Had taken Dr. Fredericks administered antidotes, but with- fons success, as she grew rapidly worse and died in about forty minutes after swallowing the poison. Captain Allaire, of the Fourth precinct, was informed of the oveurrence, and yesterday morning Sergeant Kelly no- tiled Coroner Young (o hold an inquest over the remains. POBT-NOBTEM EXAMINATION, Deputy Coroners Marsh and Cushman a equently made ‘post-mortem examination on the body, and found all the fnternal organs, except the stomach, in’s healtay condition ; the stomach was intensely inflamed, and emitted a strong odor of carbolic acid. Tu the opiufon of the medical gentle- men death resulted from acute gastritis, caused by awallow- ing a quantity of carbolte acid used for disinfecting purposes, & oner Young empanneiled a jury, and after viewing the body adjourned the further investigation of the case till Ww jay next, when the man from the Board of Health who left the poison at the houre ina bottle without © label, Dr, Fredericks and other witnesses will be examined. Mr. May was nearly frantic with grief at the loss of his wife and child, and he has serious fears that his only remain- ing child—cangerously fll with scarlet fever—will be also taken from him. is great blame on the Health Board for leavin, uaok ee ihie‘house without properly labelling it, nd BILLIARDS.
