He kad been in the habit of | buying his cigars at the saloon where Cerf was em- ployed as barkeeper, and passing the wme the proprietor, On the occa- sion in question he visited the house for the purpose of drinking a glass of beer with a friend, This familarity was refused him, and he learned that “niggers were not allowed to | drink at that bar. On his expostulating against | such an indignity to bis cilizeuship and his man- hood he was driven out into the street with skull. We can understand what a man’s feeiings must be under such treatment. He went to his friend Brooks’ store, sat down awhile, but could not be quict under the indignity, The deceased was eminently @ peaceable man, but here was an outrage inflicted upon him which aroused all his manhood. He must return to the saloon and have a talk with the proprietor and get apology from him fer an in- jury indicted in a moment of hasty feeling. While about to enter the house with this in- fention the discharged prisoner, Ceri, fired his revolver twice at him, and his victim went away lo die, The question for a fair-minded public to deter- mine is, 1s such blood-shedding Justiflable? {tv 1s not @ question of politics or of color. ‘The deceased ) lived among us as a fellow citizen, gave the com- | munity the benefit of his industry, contributed lis fair propertion to the expense of government; all he asked in return was to be parece against in- jury by'the wgls of our laws. He gets into an alter- cation with the man Cerf on a question of social standing, and, without any color of necessity, the latter shoots him down like a dog. The jury, after hearing the evidence and duly deliberating on the case, declares him “Not guilty,” and he is turned over into society to repeat the offence wicnever he thinks right. Prospects of a Lively Cempaign—The Retirement of Governor Stearns and the Struggle for the Republican Gubernatorial Nominstion— Exciting Times in tho Congressional Distriots—Efforts to Heal the Breach in tho Democratic Party, ConconD, N. H., Dec, 24, i870, The political campaign up here in the “Oia Gra nite Btute” will be a very siguifcant and interesung que this year, Being always the firat after me gathering of Congress, tt is invariably looked upon aga sort of guiding star by the poitticians, and at this particular time, when @ Presidential contest ts not fur distant, and while serious rows are brewing in the dominant party, tho progress and result of the campaign now being inaugurated will be watched with anxious interest in all sections of the country. During the last three years the republi- cans have barely carried the day, and in the election, Just before Grant was declared the people's choice for President there was probably the most flerce Pohtical contest of any that ever took place ina Single one of all the American States, At that ume the republicans won by two or three hundred ma- Jority, and this alight victory is attributed to a local quarrel then existing among some of the leading democrats—a breach, by the way, which yet ro- mains, and which energetic efforts are being made to heal over. The election does not take place until March, bat notes of preparation are even now apparent. In the different Congressional districts matters are particularly lively, the industry displayed being wholly, of course, on the part of the republicans, who hope to prolong their political power for an- other term, Itmay be added, perhaps, tuat their chances lor succcsa, according to present indica- Uons, are more than even, Uniess the rupture be- | tween the Pearson and Butteriield wings of tho democracy 18 healed # radical triumph seems inevit- | able, utdess, perhaps, there should be @ split among the republicans themselves.” As things are going now, looking at the row between Sumner and the , President, it is not safe to presume that even the dom'nant party will get along harmoniously ungil the day of election here, The trouble between the deniocrats is of a local and petty nature, about as insignificant as the row between the actors in the theatre, in Baston, and wu it is justed: hances are almost even for # victory the republicans, even if they should have a falling out. it will therefore n that harmony on both sides 1s necessary for $3, and, ®. Only One party can Win, even then it 18 Only & matter of opsaion Which will prove victo- rious, in tho opinion of your correspondent, with united and concerted action on the part of tne republicans they will be able to carry the State against any democratic combination; and, vo the other taad, Leannot conceal the admission that, if ae shoud be a breach in the dominant party and tue troubles among te democrats are adjusted, a victory lor the iatter is positively certain, Just now the republicans are the most active, and their plan of the campaign will be settled upon tn the course of a very. few days, Onslow Stearns, who has served as Governor for the pust two years, will positively decline @ renomination. As presi- | dent and manager of nalf a dozen railroads in New Hampsiire, tue same number in Massachusetts and | one or two in Rhode Island, he thinks he will be able to tind but Mitte time for executive duties. There will be a lively race for the nomunation in bis stead when the kepublican Convention meets bere; for even at this early day there are no less than haif a dozen candidates in the fleld. The most prominent of these, and the one who seems now most likely to be adopted, is Natt. Head, of Hookseve All through the war, and ior several years beiore and since he was Adjutant Gen- eral of the State, and his administration was such that the solders will go for him toauntt. He possesses otuer winning qualities in the shape of extraordinary intellect, rare executive ability, @ wide and varied business oxperience, and fur jer more, to use & phrase more forcible than elegant, he is reckoned by the people generally “as a devil- ish good ieliow.” The only thing which the old party men oring out against him is that he isa young man, but this reputed weakness may possibly prove his actual strength When the delegates as- semble in convention. ‘the other candidates wuo will be considered are E. A, Straw, @ manufacturer in Manchester; Rev. James Pike, an ex-member of Congress, of Newmarket; John M. Brackett, Presi- dent of the Wolfhorough Bank, and Horton D. Walker, of Portsmouth. These names following Mr. Head's are im about the order of the tmpor- tance they will be regarded in the Conventton, In ajl three of the Congressional districts thero will belively campaigns. Mr. Ela paving deciinea | to run ior the place again, William D. Small, of Newmarket, has been nominated. democrats have not yet matched him, but they are seriously look: around for a man, hoping to light on oue snitictently popular to secure his elec- von. General Aaron F, Stevens, the member from the Second district, 18 not only Wilnng but anxious jor another term; but there is aloud clamor for “rota- tion,” nnd there are serious apprehensions among his irlends that the days of poliuical reward for the General's gallant services in tue eld are about at an end. Themen most anxious for his place are Austin F. Pike and James F. Briggs, both of whom are reckoned a3 eminent and able lawyers, Mr. Benton has deciined a renomination in the Thirc district, and there are more ambitious men willing to take bis place than can be found in all the other districts combined, General 5, G. Griffin ts said to have the pole in the race. He was a soldier through the war, and in 1368 and 1869 was Speaker of the House of Representatlves. Among the other candidates are Chester Pike, of Cornish; L. W. Bar. ton, of Newport, aud Jonn 5. Walker, of Claremont. In the Second and Third districts, as in the First, tne democrats have: not yet united upon any candi- dutes whom they regard a8 suflicicntly strong to carry | Victory with them. ‘There are fragments of the temperance, labor reform, and woman suirage parties of a year still existing in the State, but they are all more like- ly to come within the foids of one or other of the prin- cipal parties than they are to enter the field on weir own hook, They have severally failed 1n attempta to gather strength by independent action, and bave undountedly come to the conclusion that the peopie are not yet suiliciently éducated to accept their pe- cular plaus of governmeat. If they make any effort to obtatn influence or recognition ut will, in all prob- ability be through the Legislature, and in the choice of inembers for that body tuey will do their best for those friendly to their varlous interests, The campaign, however, will be an excesdingly lively and interesting one,’ and the result will indie cafe in no small Way the turn political affairs may take In 1872, CURIOUS PHENOMENON, The Water in Oswego River Suddeuly Lowe ers Turee Feet. [From the Oswego Commercial, Doc. 22.) Parties employed at the mitls and manufactories on either side of the river in this city were greatly astonished this morning on discovering that the good head of water flowing in the river Jast evening had been reduced during the night py some mysterious agency to less than the slack supply of mudsuinmer, and im fact the water power of the river was almost completely lost for the ime. Little or no water was descending the river, and the level above the rst dam had fallen three feet, when last evening a con- siderable body of water was pouring over the top of the dam and the mill races runmnag full. In the hurbor wnd above the bridges no movement of the water was percepuble where quite a stiff current prevailed yesterday, wad the ice commenced to form across the river. During tie forenoon the river commenced to gather again slowly, but {; issull far below the nata- rai level. No satisfactory explanation has yet been given of this rather startling occurrence, which scems to threaten the stability of the water power, which is the great element of our business prosper- ity. Some people ascribe it to a sudden freezing up ol the tribuiary streams, others ure speculating ou the probability of a quiet earthquake insome way brought about by the total eclipse of the sun whick occurred this mormng, aud which some philoso- phers have predicted would be the cause of tnusuat conyalsions of nature, But the plienomenon is sull unexplained, AN RON | HORSE. An ingenious mechanic in Auburn, N. Y., says the News of that city, for nearly a year past has been employing hus leisure hours in sindying out some plan tomuke a self-supplying chemical power to take the pla or steam, and to make it move a piece of machinery oaving the motion of a horse, He claims to have brought that also to a degree of per- fection which indicates success. That he has dis- covered # motive power in certain alkalies aud acids, wich has never been brought into practical use for agricultural 1mplements,there 18 no doubl. Whether he can make it work his machine horse over soft and uneven grouna seems to be the qnly point to be tested. He appears to be very contident himself that it will do so. We Ce his description ef the machine as he furnished it to us for public information, not to nie verlise It, but as & matter of news: The machine does not go on wheels, like an en- gine, but walks like a horse, ou four legs, watch rise cight incties ana make a torward move of eighteen, atevery revolution of a centre shaft which works them. “The shaft ls ten feet long, the length of the machine. The legy are ten feet apart; fore and aft, and sidewlse five feet apart which enables the machine to preserve its balance op uneven ground, It isso consiructed that it will go up and down a heavy grade with the greatest case, and is Cale culated to walk and draw on soft and tilled land with more case than any teain of horses. It turns round in its own length to any point needed. As to speed, it will goatany rate from three vo fifteen Miles per hour. The concern can be reversed. 18 can be employed for all the purposes that a team ot horses are useful, such as ploughing, reaping of dravelng Wagons, street Cara aud Camal Lyuts,
