J, was thrown into & state of feverish excitement in conse quence of tho discovery that two young women, German servant girls employed ma Teutonic board- ing house on Newark street, known as Keppler’s Hotel—tne proprictor being a man named Andrew Keppier—bad been murdered in @ manner most mysterious, ‘ ‘The victims, Rose Wittel and Frederika Koegel, the former close on thirty years of aze and the latter about twenty, took part during the early part of the preceding evening in some terpsichorean pleasures which took place in the hotel, and in which the boarders and the Keppler fatily also participated, Everything passed oif right merrily, and ata com. paratively early hour the girls, Rose and Frederika, withdrew from the dance ball aud repaired to thelr chamber. They appeared to be im the best of healin and the happiest of moods, One of them, Frederika, was especially MUght- hearted that night. She was engaged to be married soon to a nice German iad living in the game house, one Radulph Hendrick, and her buoy- ant, effervescing state of feeling was such that even- ing a3 to excite some little banter from her more intimate friends, Soor after nine o'clock tue girls retired for the night, occupymg each a separate bed, Subsequent to thelr reurement several persons be- longing to tie Louse, as will appear hereafter, had occasion to enter the giris’ sleeping apartment, but nothing transpired calculated to excite the slightest suspicion that POUL PLAY ‘Was even dreamed of. Shortly after the girls had gone to bed yo Rudolph entered the room in search of bis watch key, which it appears his sweetheart, Frederika, was ac omed to keep for him, lest | he mtvht lose it, Custom, too, had made ita mat. ter of course for him to euter the girls’ ¢ hamberon such errand s without exciting any uneasiness with them or othe rs. He remained in the room ahout ten minutes and then retired to his own apartment. An hour or so later one of Mr. Keppler’s daughters had occasion to go tuto the servants’ room, and after a short and pleasant chat she, too, retired. ‘That was the last s ve of the poor girls, In the morning, when the family began to siir, one of | the Kepplers ed to “rout out” Rose and Frede- risa, but on reaching the chamber the terrible dis- | covery was made that the spark of ilfe had fod from both. Instead of the breathing, lusty girls in rade healta who, butafew hours before, were among the gayest of the gay, there was now naught to be seen bat TWO ATIFF ED CORPSES. The bodies bore not the slightest traces of having becn subjected to violence, nor was there anything about* the room to indicate that any struggle haa taken place. There the poor corpses lay j} cum and — guiet ud perieclly — natural- like irotched at length on its separate patiet, for their most mysterious and seem- iitaneous WwKking off was simply beyond | the power of Utoge present, a3 it also proved even to \ the Coroner and his entire panel, Some there were Who could not, and, indeed, Lever have bi vinced but that foul play had been resorted to, bus by whom Was a matter avout which everybody imgiy sis had an opinion, but scarcely dared express it, | ‘The news of the horror spread like wilddre, and | hundreds rch wnat Savbath morning tuougint | agood d 1 their prayers than tie M ) of the poor German girl TERIOUS FATE The authorities were, of \ course, promptly notilied of the matter, and sieps | were a aken for the holding of a coroner juquest. ‘The next day the then Coroner, Dr. C. Sticsier, Louisa Keppler, Christian Volz, Johu Eugelhornand Drs. Witla O'Gorman and Christopher byrich, ‘The evidence given by Hendrick appears to have } becu the most important, ‘This witness deposed that he was a boarder in Keppler’s place and that he was there on Sunday night; that about hali-past upied by the Lwo girls for the purpose of winding Ms watch, as was iis habit; the girls were in separate beds; spoke to one of tiem and asked her for hts watell key: she told him it was in her dress poc the dre s was hanging on the stove; look the dress trow the stove afier striking a light with a match; the girl took the key from her pocket and gave it to him; wound op the waich and put the key on the trunk; was positive the dress from which the key was taken ‘Was on the stove; Was in tho room about ten min- ules; was epgaged tobe married to Frederika; wien bspoke to her sie seemed to bo well and in goot Spirits; there had been heid on Saturday nigat a dancing school; : FREDERIKA DANCED, but Witness did not know Uhat either of the girls had drank anything; on former occasions had observed a fire in the room, but was posilive there was none on Sunday night. Emilia Keppler swore that she went up to the room in which the giris slept about eleven o'clock for the key of the kitchen; during the nightsiie had conversed with them and believed them well in leaith. Louisa Keppler, allading to lrederika, de- clared that on Sunday night the latter appeared “anusualiy happy.” WHAT THE DOCTORS THOUGHT, Dr. O'Gorman, the then county physician, at the ose of his testimony regarding the post-mortem amination which had been made, sald he was | unbabie to state positively what caused death, “but from the appearance of the bodies viewed exter- nally, whea I first observed them, and the post- mortem appearance, upon exaniuvation, was such as corresponds with the poisouing by carponic acid gus or charcoal vapor.” Dr. Eyrich made an analytical examination of the stomach of one of tie bodies, Le tested for mor- phine and arsenic, but found none. It was his opmion, also, tuat “death resulied from inhaling carbonic or coal oxide gas.” THE VERDICT. The testimony, as shown, clearly established the fact that no fire had been in the chamber of death whue it was yet the abede of the living—that is to Say, none was in the stove, unless placed there anb- sequent to the time when the girls fell asieep. ‘Tne doctors’ testimony sustains te latver theory, and while there seemed to be litte question in the minds of individuais but that a dounle murder most font had been per- | petrate.i, still the jury felt unable to go further in the matter of a verdict than te declare that the de- ceased persons had died from causes upknown to the jury. In order to properly appreciate Mrs. Freytag as crson of veracity it is proper to explain that some time ago she made a trip to Eorope with her daughter, During her ab- sence her hustand, Andrew Freytag, had oceasion to borrow some $800, As security he gave, as ke supposed, ® mortgage on his property, worth $12,000 or $19,000, ‘The paper has since proved to have been a deed In fall, This matter came before the courts and Mr. aud Mrs, Engethorn were sworn, Their evidence was damaging to the Freytag in- terest. ‘This, added to the fact that the famulies have never been on intimate rerms, naturally in- dnces the suppositien that the friendship between thei is not great, Indeed it is thougut that Mrs. Freyiag has been solely actuated In this matter out of malice and with the desire to destroy Engle- horn’s ability to testify against thelr interests. How- ever this may be, the authorities have not thought fit to issue any process against Mr. Englehorn wp- Jess some additional evidence can be prodaced. ‘The papers are still retained, and jt would not be surprising if, after all, this mystery of mysteries should be explained, urder will ‘out,’ says the old saw, a SHIPPING NEWS. Sometimes this matter of disease becomes vapor and subtilely affects the nerves and the brain. This hostile uid to man’s existence is never absent; it was implanted with Life, but in the healthy it is divided so as not to be felt, But, | | i when from fatigue, bad diet, conduct, or coming in contact with bad smells or contagious vapors, this matter of disease Decomes aroused to activity and concentration, and seities like dew on the weakest part of the body, producing at once pain and disease, Now, there may be many medicines which will reduce this | hostile fluid; butthere is one which never falls in cases of Dizziness, Pains in the Head, Kheumatism, Costiveness and Colds; in fact, sickness 1s reinced and Gnally vanished by Pits purging with Brandreth’ , which mfallibly purify | the blood and bring the matter of disease within manageable limits.
