Thirteen gas wells are now in successful operation in various parts of the city, They ure used mostly to furnish fuei and light to manufacturers. he gas is found at an ave- ay Oe of nfty-five feet, and the average yield per weil per day Is upwards of 29,000 cubic feet. Sr. Louis, Oct, 27, 1870, The express train which left here Tuesday even- ing on the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad ran through an open switch at midnight and collided with a coal train on the side track, four miles this side of Shoals station, The fireman of the express train, and a Woman and girl inthe first passenger car, Whoee names are unknown, were killed, sod avout a dozen persons injured—none serivusly. An accident occurred this afteruoon on the Port land and Kennebec Railroad, near Thompson Broo! Kast Brunswick. HUNTINGDON, Oct. 27, 1870, A locomotive on the Huntingdon and broad Top Ratiroad exploded this evening, Jerry Wertz, the engineer, Was blown to pieces, and a boy named Dauiel Heck was fatally injured. VIRGINIA. Ex-Mayor Cahoor, of Richmond, Convicted of Forgery and Sentenced to the State Prison. RICHMOND, Oct. 27, 1870, In the City Court this morning ex-Mayor George Cahoon was convicted of uttering a forgery and his punishment assessed at four years in the State prison. ‘The case was one tn which the prisoner, with others, had by a forged note deiranded the Stale of $7,000, the vaiue of an escheated estate, Cahoon was appointed to the vosition of Mayor by General Schouieid three years ago.
