8 ANOTHER ATMOSPHERIC PHENOMENON. Nosru 1pame, Mass, Wnson House, Oct, 24, 1870. Yo THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD:— ‘The twelve days’ wonder concerning the Chinese mhoemakersin this town 1s pretty much over; but we had 4 new wonder this morning, and up to this afternoon have received no explanation of the phenomenon, Everybody heard it, Dut it would seem only a few persons saw it, At ten minutes be- fore seven o'clock two loud and very heavy explo- mons occurred, of about equal force, one Immedi- ately following the other, each of which shook the large house in which we were. It was supposed by some that the nitro-giycerine magazine at this end of the tunnel Was the scene of the ng peeypen and en this failed it was supposed to ‘been at the other end of the tunnel, but Mr. Shandly, one of the contractors, who is here, says there Is not enough uitro-glycerine at that int to make any such explosions. These suppositions were at once put at rest, Soon after eight o'clock we had the statement of a gentleman who saw the whole thin; He says his attention was first called by the appear- ance of a renege light seen through his window, which could not be produced by the sun, He rushed out of doors, and beheld a AO peculiar appearance m the heavens, a8 of anroral clouds approaching each other in a kind of gyrating motion, and when they met the violent explosions followed, which ahook the earth, and in an instant the sI ain perfectly clear, This is about all we know of the phenomenon, We are asked from Pittstield, by tele- graph, tf we heard the reports, and can only answer that we did hear them, but are wholly in the dark a8 to the cause of them, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS.
