, HNANOUAL, AND COMMBRCUL, WALL SrneRr, } SUNDAY, Oct. 9, 1870, ne GENERAL TRADS OF THE WEEK ‘has not been as satisfactory to the merchants as that of the eariler portion of the fall. Thero was a lull in activity and demand, which combined to induce lower prizes for most Kinds of merchandise, The decline in cotton has been the secret of the change, Country buyers and up-town tradesmen have not entirely supplied their wants, ond hence it ig thought that the Jail 1s only temporary, and not the beginning of the declining activity of the year. ‘The fall in the prico of the raw article of domestic otton goods naturally induces buyers to watt while the supply furnished from the East has been more abundant owing to the better working of the mills in that section, The flercer character of the ‘war in Europe has checked the speculation for a rise 4n cotton; but the decline while still progressing aunng the week was clocked by reports of ary weather in most of the cetion States, he consump- tion of cotton in Evrope has been so greatly arrested ‘by the war that the stocksin European and American ports are largely $n excess of the usual quantity, while the visible supply the world over is now a bundred thousand bates in excess of supply at this time last year, The One weather of the week necked business la woollens. The up-town trades- » men and retailers would, in particular, profit py the advent of cooler weather, for with the presentseason Dy there is little disposition ta lay in warmer goods, ‘The flour market has been firm and active under a good export demand for whest. In general the commercial Markets Rave Leen steady, wit 9 mode- raie amount of business, AT THY STOCK EXCHANGE the dealings have been more active than in any ‘week since the war fn Europe started so sharp a de- ¢line and the surrender of Napoleon so suddenly checked it. It will be remembered that with the latter event Wall street was disposed to enter on a rather active movement for higher prices, but was terred by fear of the approaching fall, when money has been usually so stringent, Hence the Jong dulness at the Stock Exchange which foliowed she surrender of Sedan. Since that time persons , outside the frequenters of the Long Room shave had their tine fully occupied with _ “heir legitimate businesss engagements, the | season having seen one of great prosperity in commercial circles, and were without that leisure ‘which, following success in money making, is sure to turn the speculative mind toward Wall street. The past week was one of less activity in general ‘trade, as above noted, aud hence we find a more “widespread interest in the course of prices at the Stock Exchange on the part of the general public, “with the result of a general advance in prices ana ® buoyant tone to the market. The buying disposition thus evinced has been encour- aged by the growing conviction that money 1s not \ to be stringent this fall. That the HERALD was \ prompt to foreseo a remittance of the usual activity the money market this year must be fresh in the amemory of our readers. Should the next week or two pass without any accident this expectation ‘will have been fairly consummated. When specula- tion was ao hesitaung last August that it feared this pertodieal stringency we wrote:— ‘The question, uowever, which apsorbs most inte- ‘rest, and now constaitly exercises the mind of Wall street, is the future of the money market in the in- terval to the cessation oi the fall demand trom the South and West. Attention has been parti directed to this matter by the steaay decline in the irees of the bunks, whose surplus beyond the egal reserve is confined to the sum of only ten mil- earls dellar, aa amount which experience has is easily withip the reach of speculative con. ‘raction. But the situation this fall is different trom ‘that for many years. ‘that the public may make s er Mistake in operating tor a heavy decline in tocks in the interval to the relaxation of money +" ‘very obvious, A week later we had occasion to say:— ‘The course ef prices at the Stock Exch: has . Justatied the warning given tn thie column last’ Mone aay peiaivs, that the popular anxiety to make c) lative saies in anticipation of a repetition of bans and stringency of last September might it & Very serious mistake. In the midale of September, still observing the | continued deferment of activity, we wrote:— | ee Asto Wall sireet, the continued abundance of }”\ money is a provocative to business which rarely | fails to prove operative. Itis true the past spring as an exception to this rule. but at that time the eee feeling was heid in check by the remem- rance of the eventiul previous fall and winter, At the present time the signs favor @ recurrence of the activity of 1668, based upon the abundance of money > nthe fall of thas year. Stocks seem to have their ther good years, ike the peach and blackberry ps, atid if tis indications are not very deceitful rte 0 Oba fair to be @ repetition of 1 It isa commendable feature, too, that the movement 60 far bas been highly conservative and steady. En- gagements and ivestinents have been made with prudence and caution that promise a healthy UsLNeS3. If now we turn to the record of prices at the Stock Exchange we shail find a steaty rise in valued under ‘the influence of dasy mouey and @ gradual dissipa- ‘sion of the fear of activity. We compare the prices ‘of August 29, when the frst of the above quoted ‘paragraphs was written, and the prices on Saturday last, in order to exnibit ata glance the direct effect of the continued ease in money and show how dis- astrous would have been a speculation movement for a .deciine, such as we warned our readers \against, It should be remembered that in the second column of prices in the table 4 per cent eliould be added to New York Central, stock and scrip, 234 per cent to Pittsburg and 33g per cent to Hanaibal and St. Joseph for iramediate dividends: — ———1870-—__—_, Aug, 29, Oct, 8. anton. ig Western Union.. 87% 4a 6736 9344 8534 1384 10036 9496 10834 Northwestern. THE GOLD MARK ‘was irregular and unsettled with more activity, the high borrowing rates for cash gold checking the speculation for a decline, and the prospect of a pro- tranted war in Europe giving the premium a sharp reaction toward the ciose, when, after a decline from 114 to 112%, there was an advance to 113%. ‘The upward movement lacks force, however, for the reason that each fractionat improvement in the Premium permits the fulfilment of iarge orders for exportable products, and thus supplies exchange, The sterling market was weak to the close under ‘the continued sales of bills drawn by the Canadian banks in the process of utilizing their capital in this market, GOVERNMENT BONDS. The government market was extremely steady, and, tn the middle of the week, the fcreign bankers ‘were large purchasers, to realize a little protit af- forded by a sudden advance in London, where the 62 touched 915, almost the highest European quo- ) ‘sation ever made, THR SOUTHERN STATE BONDS ‘were quiet, but firm, holders being tndisposed to under the prospect of a streng investment ae- ‘and this winter, Wien they shall have marketed ir Cotton. Actual transactions were at advanc- jog quotations. MONEY, except on one or two days, when some small houses paid seven per cent, was in steady supply at five to six percenton government and stock collaterals. The bank statement was a mystery to the street, for the reason that the week had shown no activity cor- responding with the diminution of resources, but produced no unfavorable effect, tor the reason that the operauions of the Treasury in disbursing two and a haif millions of gold (one and a half for the redeemed five per cents of 1871) and two millions of currency at the close of the week, were too late to have thelr full result appear in the average. THE BANK STATEMENT. The weekly statement of the assoclated banks is ‘unfavorable, owing toa loss of about $1,400,000 in the item of reserve, crease of $80,100 In legui tenders.
