WALL STREET FINANCIERING. and Injured Innocence. ‘The report which appeared in yesterday’s HERALD éetailing the swindiing operations of a certain J. H. Richardson caused great excitement on the street. That two such well known houses as Vermilye & Co., of 16 Nassau street, and Maxwell & Graves, of 85 Cedar street, should have been victimized in such simple manner excited much surprise among the fultiated. In order to obtain faller particulars about ‘tals mysterious affair, the account of wich we re- eeived ata late hour on Monday night, a HERALD reporter called yesterday at the banking house of Maxwell & Graves. In reply to some questions as to the nature of their business transactions with the absconding Richardson, the reporter was quietly informed that the frm knew no such individual as Richardson, and were in utter ignorance of bis al- Jeged swindling operations, Much surprised at this intelligence the Teporser went to Vermilye’s bank in Nassau street, where he was informed that the house did not deal in Pacifle bonds, and so Jar from having sutlered any joss at the hands of Mr. Rich- ardson they never bad any connection with bim, and, in fact, were profoundly ignorant of his ex: Sstence on the street, Mystified by these statements the reporier determined io leave no sione unturned bo out the facts of the case. On calliug at the Post Office he found that a Mr. J. HB. Richardson had box 3,392, giving as hhis_address 41 Wall street, and yestel there were a few papers C9 letters directed to lying in tus box. From it quiries at 41 Wali street it appeared thata pantie manly individual, who gave his name as J. H. Ric! ) hired a sinall office from Mr. T. 2 anal a broker, in the middle of April last, aud hung ot a shingie with the following inscription:— J, H. RICHARDSON, BANKER, He did not seem todo very much business, and there were no evidences, In the shape of books or papers, that he transacted any book! busuness whatever. In tact, bis movements were siugwiar, if not mysterious, 80 much so as to excite the atten- uon of Mr. Artault and other gentlemen in the same building. He used io come to the odice about eleven ‘clock in the morning, and never remained more than an how. With the exception of a corn bere] dressed in most fashionable style, ie person call on him while he was baa there. md there was an air of pectablty and | apparent honesty aboat him while disarmed Hed ion, aud no person imagined that he was engaged 4m any unlawiul occupation. He remained only one month at No. 41 Wail street, and since that ume has not been seen by any of the inmates of that build- tug. From the fact of his still keeping a box at the Post Office i would appear that he used that address as a bdiind m order the more successfully to carry on nis swindling operations, Beyond these facts nothing at present can be ascerialned. Wall street brokers are proverbially reucent when any of their number has been taken tp, and it is not to be wondered at that they disclaim ai! knowledge of Kichardsou, and wouid even wish the publie to understand that ho such Individual existed, How loug Richardson parried on nis little game, who were his accom- plices, who suifered from his schemes, and how great was the amount of the “swag” realized must remain among the undiscovered mysteries which Are so common in Wall street, and which make That classic locality so dangerous to the unwary, who, in their anxiety to make money, ran risks Which, 1f known, would destroy their reputation as safe business men.
