eee Their Progress in Shoemaking--Efforts Towards Baueation and Cbristianity—Their General Demeanor and Popularity Among the Citizens—Toe Crispin Organization Disorganized and Demolished, ‘ NontH Apams, Mass., August 22, 1870. ‘Phe Oriental aboemakers in this town, about which there bas been an almost national commotion, have Ablength cease: to be onjects of wonder or curiosity. Bvery one of them are now fully employed, and Mr. Bampsun asserts that his business is getting along fay more saNsiactorily than ever at did wefore, and the Bumerous doudty which have prevatled coneerning weir quallfcations 4o learn a mechanical trade need no longer exist, They have now beep at work two months, and not only their abitizx put thelr willing- ness to become industrious and useft has been tlearly demonstrated, The mectdents of the arrival of these Chinamen here have already been given in the HERALD, together with subsequent accounts of their beginning and their progress in the intricate business of manufacturing shoes by machiuery; but Unce my last letter there have been Dumerous events connected with their presence which are not only Interesting i shemeelves, bus which go to show most conclusively that John Chinaman {8 en- dowed with suficient natural imielligence and papapie of mastering an education which should elevate bim to that level of any other “man and brother’ now recognized by the American people or the American constitution ae recently amended, THEIR SKILL AS WORKMEN. It iano exaggeration of the facts to claim tirat these Asiatic workmen, notwithstandiog the brief me they havé been employed, are this day making far better shoes than the average of Crispings who have given nearly a whole life to the business, The faculty of the Chinaman for imitation Is renowned the world over, and it 1s, therefore, not singular that they take readily to anything in any line of business in which they may engage. I have heard it related ofan American once travelling in tho “Flowery Kingdom” who wished a pair of pants made. Ho took his cloth to a Chinese tailor, and aiso a pair of old pants to gulde him in getting up the garment, ‘There was a large patch on the Knee of the old palr, andwhen the new ones “were finished the Chinaman, true to his instinct of imita- ton, had a similar pateh on them also, I would never have believed’ this story, but for an incident which happexed in Sampson's ehop the other day. One of the men engaged in teaching the Orientals, while teaching ove of them Uo drive the nails into the heels of the shoes, by ac- cident got hold of tnrce or four crooked naiis i suc- cession, and when he struck them with the hammer broke them short of, the point remating in the lea- ther heel, Of course he put in straight natls imme- Giately after, allowing the stub of the broken one aisotoremain, Then, leaving his Chinese pupil to By Dishanu at the business, he was somewhat amused aud surprised on his return Lo discover that John had broken of precisely thewame number of haus in the heei of every shoe that he had been at Work upon. It is hardly necessary to add that the Uselessiiess Of following the exampie of the Lastruc- tor #0 Closely was at opce explained. ‘ibis, incredible as it may seem, ts an absolute faci, and Waen such mien us these are cinploycd ina business whose per- fection in every deiall is required, it ie casy to comprehend their useiulness, over some men Wuo cClatm superiority of intelligence as well as of race. ‘The Chinamen are not so rapld workmen as the An- Glo-Saxous, but thelr industry, faituiulness and Close application Lo business are more than an evea Offset to what they lack: ed, they are contramted: forined tie: im spe 3 p With the Class of workiuvn, Who ion Ja iis town, to they price only excel to eac even to excel their own former inai- iG COMMUNITY. ‘ ve their arrival se. then the respect wa hole community. Rumors and reports reach us from Binghamton that the third and last participant in the late brutal murder iu that city was arrested on Satur- day at Union, a small village some eight or ten miles west of Binghamton. The remarkabte statement is made that the party arrested proves to be no other than ihe notorious Ruioif, who was several times tried at ithaca some years since for the murder of hia wife. Those of our readers who are familiar with the circumstances attending the Ithaca murder snd the trials which followed will recollect that the fact of the murder was proved beyond a peradventure, and that Ruloff was the perpetrator of the crime. From the circumstance that the body of the murdered victim was thrown into Cayuga Lake and never recovered, the mur- derer never felt the halter draw—a fate which his great crimo richly merited—but he was sen- tenced to Auburn State Prison for a long term of years. His sentence. expired some time since, and from that time to the present he has rematued in obscurity, except an occasional mention as to bis whereabouts, The circum- stauces connecting the arrested party with the murder are said to be of a very convincing charac- ter, one of which is that the tracks where the murderers entered the river, from which two of them never emerged alive, are of a peculiar description, and that the shoes of the arrested amity fit the track made by the person not Towed, one of whose feet is what is known as a “clump foot.’ Another fact is that upon the ereon of the arr d party is found a railroad icket from New York to Batavia, corresponding in date and other particulars with the tickets for and from the same places found upon, the persons drowned. All the tickets had been rode on from New York to Binghainton, and were endorsed as good from that point by the same conductor. We understand that he was identified as Ruloff, by Judge Balcolm as soon as he saw him, and we be- lieve that Judge Halcom presided at one of the trials of Raloff for the murder of his wife, and would, therefore, be ry likely to remember his im.
