A Store iu Bingbawten Entered by Three Boergivre—Vespurate Encounter with Two Clerks—One Clerk Killed and the Othor Wounded, BINGHAMYON, N. Y., August 17, 1870, The store of D. M. and E, G. Halbert was entered at thee o'clock this morning by three burglars. The noise awoke two clerks, Who habitually slept in the store, aud who attacked the burglars, beating one Of them very severely and capturing him, whale the others mude thelr escape. But while the clerks were preparing to secure their captive lis compan- long -returued to rescue htin, and shot one of the clerks th ough the head, Killing him instaptiy, His name Was Frederick A. Meriick. Thecierks haa a revolver, bat it missed fire. Die burglars fired tive shots altogether, and evidently supposed they had kitled poth the clerss. The name of the surviving clerk is Gtivert Burrows. He is but sluzutly wound- , Rewards are oneren for the capture of the mur- derer as fo.lows:—By the city, $2,600; by the county, Faye, close ty You, will uot enable you to-cateh ibs | $2590; by the Messrs, Haibert, $1,000, oe cepig gro Vvoion wenge nagd mere : is Wi ‘. or ary Conversa! ate AUADER, Uflen drops into a Veli of humor, and exthncts << froin you. Hecan aiways lea you te topics, | To rng Epivor OF THE TLERALD:— hoi you ou them at pleasure, and thea Mamlss As the result thus far of the most careful search and inquiry, by both police authorities and Coroner’s jury, only two facts seem to be fairly extablished—viz., that doath was caused by the manrderous use of the “iron dog,” and that said “dog” Is a peculiar object—a peculiar or unusual object, because no one of all who have seen it, or of those who were examined by the jury, appear to have ever seen its exact coun- terpart before. I imagine that the importance of this fact is felt by all those who are ‘on the search;"? but why do they not make @ proper we of it? The “dog” has no doubt been seen and handled by others in this city besides the mur- derer before the murder was committed, and yet they may not be able to recognize or identify it from the mere verbw description we have had of the inswrument.. Very few, even of the educated, can form a proper conception of the actual appearance of it, even from a good description of it. How much more improbable would it be that an unlettered person could recognize it from euch description, And yet that very person might have handled it or kicked it avound many a tine and not have knowu that it was even a “ship carpenter's dog.” Let the auth have photographs taken of it, or, better still, as near as posaiblo, fuc similies made of wood or other meterial, and haye these exposed in fifty different prominent places in the city. Let the original ‘dog’? be exposed to the public also, where all may eee it who desire to, and then when it is thus bronght before the people in a manner such a3 that even a child night recognize it if he had seen it before, and with the fact that a reward is publicly offered to any one who will positively identify it, I feel confident that the effort will not be altogether barren of results. It is not too late to have it done now. Let it not be seid that in less than three weeks after one of the foulest murders that has stained the annals of our city the murderer defiantly walks the strects of the great city safely and fearlessly, because the officers of justice are asleep and the murder is {| already forgotton by tho poosll, whose sensibili- ties were terribly sliocked so recently.
