lett f Kutais. of my arrival tothe upper olags of Kutais. was ent, of course. Bat before aa) was to bave bogua I Resenonea myself before Count and Countess. ‘as I standing before Emperor and Empress of all the Russias? The gapremely grand iuclination of her body, the ; @mperd li o her head, the royel look that beamed ¢ from her eyes will make me tl ink forever that by {@ome mistake or another only was she Countess Levaschoff. ARISTOCRACY. { The collection of well dressed gentlemen and flounced ladies was something remarkable, When first aaw Kutais after passing the tollgate I said to ‘ myself, “Oh, a second rate town, military station, . perhaps; shall only stop for to-day.” How was itl nd such an assemblage of aristocratic society at Kutais? Had the Emperor chosen the choicest of St. Petersburg and sent them to garrison a town ov the highway to Tiflis so that strangers should see and note it well to the good of Russia ? “No. Only Thad underestimated Russia and the ‘Russians. Thad classed her people only a little superior to the Turks, because of their mariolatry and servility. Henceforth conscience demands ‘that T place the Russians themselves, as a people, im the ame rank as the French, Not in the same rank as America, England or Prussia, because that is impossible as yet. Ah, republic entlemen, is a wonderful analeptic for a peop! hen the Russians shall have drank of its doc- trines they will change the face of Europe. T was quite astonished atthe number of princes and princesses present at the soiree. Onc princess gang a native song of the Caucasus, That mative song I have heard it every- where; heard it from the camel driver ft Asssoguan; heard it from a poor old women who mourned her husband at the statlon of Goom-Gooma, in Abyssinia; heard it often from the frail fair of Cairo; heard it at a wedding feast in Jerusalem; hoard it at the Grand Mosque of Damascus; heard it in La Mancha and Andelu- @ia; heard it at Auli Rumeli, in Cretje heard it from all the southern nations, from those people of the dark eyes and sallow faces, and I know I ehall hear it in Persia and India whither I wend. And yet it isa native song in Georgia, “It isa gong of the country,” said the Count to me in ex- planation. Why is it we neve hear this song in America, in England, in Ireland, Scotland, Ger- many, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, R a, or in any land of light skins and blue eyes. It is not to be heard in Circaseia but it is heard south of the ‘Caucasus in Georgia and Armenia, A prince helped the princess with a deep, deep voice, and a young princess sustained her part with a very thin, girlish voice. Everybody clapped their hands, and the two princesves hid their faces with their fans. The ladies were dressed like the natives of the country—a small, round turban cap, made of fine straw, bordered round with artificial flowers, and a veil thrown over. it, is the head- dress. The other portions of the dresses are inuch 0 intricate for me, but 1 saw expansive panta- isons of red silk,a bodice of blue cloth, richly embroidored and sect off with pieces of lace, where- ever a bit could be hung. After this trio had entered the two children of the Governor walked up to the platform to play their part. The boy had quite a Young America air about him; the girl-tail for her age—was modesty and missy. The performance of the children—well done—was heartily applauded, so hearti'y, indeed, that I saw the regal mother bend to blush and smile. There were a number of pieces played, songs and gices sung, of sufficient length, excellence and varioty to please the most fastidl- ous. Kui though only a town of 12,000 inhabit- ants, and with nothing in its modern aspect or sin the two or three Georgian ruins in the viciuity vof sufficient interest or importance to detain the traveller, is celebrated for being the place where Medea was born. 1 found no traces of the Col- chlan magician who formed the subject of the tragedy written by Euripides. The town was anciently called Cyta, afterwards Cyteis, hence the word Kutais. y Of my residence in Kutais, of all the scores of thiogs with which I became necessarily ac- qualated; of the English eogineers, who spend much time at t e Hotel de France instead of at their work; of the two famous monasteries which are to be found near the vicinity; of the excellent farmer, named Lenabi, about whom Count —_ Levaschoff especially enthu- siastic, I have noth of snfficient impor- tance to intercalate here, unless I had in view an unnecessary extension of my letter. EASTER SERVICES. I must, however, not omit mentioning that when I reached Kutais the whole town was ina zealous frame of mind for the celebration of the ood old days of Easter according to the ortho- lox mode. This is by keeping up a continual tintinabulation with all bells, great and small. The ringers were soidiers, who relieved each other every other hour. Another is by eating tall plum cakes, notable for the beggarly sca: y of plums found therein. The inhabitants also’ in- vested much money iu new clothes, new hats, new shoes and ornaments for the gentler sex, 80 that Easter Sunday was nshered in with great éclat at Kutais, plum cakes, colored eggs, new clothes and din of clamoring bells much con- ducing thereto. “Christ is risen,” said everybody in Kui they kissed each other on the cheek. “Chr risen,” said the little boys, saluting their young friends with the profound gravity of — their seniors. “Christ is rifen,’’ said the women and the girls, and they also kissed with hearty enthu- siasm the cheeks of their friends, neighbors and relatives. A great many people went about the street fifing away with mournful vigor, accompanied by others playing upon a one-stringed violin, creat- ing such music as Pan did with his syrinx in the words of Arcadia. Others celebrated the day with thrumming ona shallow tambour, and added to this was the well known strect organ. I watched with a strange curiosity a party of Georgians di rting with the agility of Fauns upon a green ill, It was very like the dog dance of the ,Cheyennes. There were also many voices lifted in the streets late at night, in much the same style—and J am certain from the same cause—as fast young men when they sing at unreasonable hours, “We won't go home till morning.” ‘There were tho usual resorts of the rising generation to whilo away the holiday hours, such as flying kites, playing marbles and revolving in cradles, and riding wooden horses round a_ circle. The women of Imeritia were out in the quiet aud most retired streets, moving their limbs to the ‘heavy fantastic dance of their country. I saw much better dancing in Lomali Land; the Ghazeeyah of Beni-Looct and the nautch girls of India are infinitely their superiors in this clap- hand and heave-the-limh dance, This pastime of the Imeritia females is a very tame business, and a stranger would not waste more than a moment to Jook upon it, were the languor of the movewent and stupidly heavy style not reiieved by the pure complexion, the voluptuous forms and wonderful eyes of the dancers. It was with clink of castanets, ringing of bells, blowing of fifes and bugles, roll of tambours, laughter of people re- turving home from the merri-makes, music and gongs, that each day of Easter week died at Kutais. CITY SIGHTS. HAPPY. When I left Kutais I advanced to the region which is only one of the many boasts of the Cau- casus. The first hour of the journey developed a new scene to me. Miles upon miles of land sloping up and down; green knolls truncated stood to the right and left as far as the eye could see, and between cach knoll there wi lovely little hollowa, flowery and verdant enough to de- asked my com- panion, M. ing, of the Imperial Life Guaids, of me. This oficer and myself had en- gaged a tarautasse—a springless vi ternal appe like an ordi tween us to con us as far as Ti sO as to re- duce a trifle the heavy expense which every one must incur who travels in the Caucasus. “Yes,” Ta arereg, it is a land where Tearless, qiiet eyes, Wrapt in etcrnul silence, farre from enymien. And so it was, and one felt it from the inner- Most recesses of the heart. No house marred the contour of the waving ground, no sound disturbed the silence that fore reigns over the wide, wide cea of swelling upland. And you felt, as the passing cloud above darkened the light green of the hollows and hillsides and lightly rested above the young groves—-and you were fain to catch views of sky and land together—that this must be a happy land to live in. It long distauce to Titiis from Kutaiz—more than 240 yer-ts, equal to 160 miles. You pass quickly through various scenery. There is a sud- den transition from the uninhabited upland near Kutais to a populous district, chiefly inhabited by Tartars, Upland and meadow, wide and waving corn fields, rocky slopes, fertile river bank and gray, bare crags, deep defiles, picturesque passes, and the eternal Caucasus always in sight, are wlint the scenery chiefly consists in. Then there are the white stations of the government, which are provided for those travellers who have obtained ® prodorojna,.or permit, from the authorities to travel; the Tartar villages, of which there are @ great number and always interesting; the castled and ruins of Georgian fortresses; the roaring, inop vi Sol Rion; the ploughmen at their work, with their patient oxen; the long, long cara- vans of camels which you frequently pass; the queer little donkeys and their submissive drivers; Cossack couriers and constant waves of tra- vellers, are sights that astonish, amuse and while the tedium of the journey.
