Dawes’ Exposure of Republican Extravagance, WasuInoTon, July 8, 1870. The New York Collectorship. ‘The friends of Mr. Murphy have been remarkably quiet all day, confident In their success to-morrow. ‘The hearing of te opposite sides on this question ‘will take place to-morrow morning before the Com- mittee on Commerce. Fenton now seems disposed ‘@ set out on an eatirely new tack, and will make an edort to retain Merritt in the Naval Office. This course, if Carried out, will leave Murphy almost Withont oppositions The New Attorney General, Mr. Ackerman this mor1Mg t0oK the oath of oMce as Attorney General betore Associate Justice Wiley, of the Supreme Court of the Drstriet of Columbia, He afterwards rece!ved a large nun™er Of visitors athis office, At twelve o'clock he s4endgd the Executiyg taslon. Ing Dill had a long discussion to-day, the principal @isagreement being the rate of interest, the House Commitiee insisting on four per cent and that of the Senate arguing that there could ba no negotla tions at that rate. Tne Senate Committee want fore.gn agencies, ana exhibit a letter from the Sec- Tesary of the Treasury in favor of them. They also Gisagreed as Wo the gold clause of the bill. Dacotah. New Mexico- Wasbington Ter ‘was calicd up in the Senate to-day and after some d@epate was referred to a Conference Committee. ‘This was rather unexpected; but the iriends of the Dill profess to be satisfied, inasmuch as it will fare Detter there than it would have done in the Senate. 4m that body 1t would have given rise to debate, and Probabiy some amendments would have been adopted Which would not have been accepted by the House. Ben Butler says the House will insist upon the original bili, or rather the bill that passed that body, and (hat any attempt to alter it by the Senate Wil be met by resistance, It is thought the Confer- ence Commitiee will report the House bill, which seems to be salisfactory to all parties. ‘The Army Appropriation Bill ‘will be called up to-morrow after the morning hour. tis the intention of Senator Wilson to offer the main feature of the bill to reorganize the army which was defeated inthe Senate last night as an amendment to the Army Appropriation bill. He will keep out the section relating vo the pay of the general and lieutenant general, and probably the section relative to brevet rank. It is thought the feeling is so strong against the bill that it will be defeated, even as an outrider to the Army Appro- prigtion bill. The Treasury Balance. At the close of business today the currency balance in the Treasury was $29,(55, coin, $116,011,723; of Which $36,283,500 18 tn coln certifi- @ates, leaving an actual available cola balance of 879,728,228, The McoGarrahan Land Claim. THE INDIANS. si scm (dem.) 3 ind,, moved to jay the bil! ob the Conference of the Indian Delegations with Commissioner Parker. WASHINGTON, July 8, 1870, The Indian delegations, representing the Sans Arc, ‘Winne, Conjourus and Two Kettle Sioux, had a coun- cil with Commissioner Parker to-day. The council ‘was opened by the Commissioner expressing regrets that all the Indians could not have been here at the time Red Cloud and Spotted Tall were In Washing- ton, He also explained to them that Spotted fail had, while here, promised to keep peace, and Red Cloud, while making no positive promises, would keep on his reserve, The general tenor of the Com- missioner’s remarks was simtiar to those conveyed to the delegations which have recently been here, asserting the aesire of the government to have them at peace with the whites and the determination to use properly the appropriations made by Congress for the benefit of the Indians, Little Swan, responding, said he came right aw: when he was calied here to see his Great Father, He thought that what the government waited was good, but said his peopie all had not hearts like his own and sometimes would not agree. The usual complaints about the waites taking their land and ‘the establishment of railroads in the country were made. In response to a question from Senator Corbett, who was present, Little Swan said his people would return to their reservation after their summer hunt; and tothe question whether they had gone out to hunt or commit depredations he said they did not go out for a war, but I suppose they will war walle they areout. He wants three or four stores on the reser- vation, 80 they can buy goods cheaper, Running Bull, Red Feather and others made speeches, all expressing iriendship for the whites and asking for more traders. They aiso want pre- sents to take home to their families. They desire to have General Stanley and Major Randall remaio among them. Red Feather said he was very poor and wanted to go back well dressed. He wanted a Wagon, oxen and cows, and desired the Great Father to take care of the hali-breeds among the tribes, The Comnmasioner made another specch afier the Indians had concluded, saying he was glad to hear they were well disposed and frieadly, and hoped they would so continue, and that they would keep their young men friendly and not let them go out to fight, Alluding to the traders he said their agent can appoint as many good traders, as be chooses. Alltne government desires is that they get good nen. These Indians will start back to thelr homes to- Hight, and they wiil be given presents for their fam- ilies, They will visit Puiladelpbia and New York en route. During the interview Commissioner Parker asked Little Swan whether his chiets and young braves would agree with him as to peace and have good nearts, The chief remarked that he had visited Con gress and found the members there disagreeing. It was the same way with his people at home, The question was asked how he became a great chief. He replied, by his deeds in battle. Some one sug- gested, “By killing people?” “Yes,” he quickly re- sponded, “the same as the Great Father in the White House.” The Broles of Dacotah Talk Fight—They Or- der the Troops to Leave the Country. WASHINGTON, July 8, 1870, An official report, forwarded here from the Lower Brole Agency, Dacotah, datei the 19th of June, mentions that on that date the Indians located thers visited the camp of Brevet Major Kranz, of the Fourteenth infantry, and at a council which they desired informed him that they represented the fighting portion of that population. They stated that the land had been given them and their chil- dren by the government, and that the whites there were trespassers, using their wood, water and grass, They demanded pay for everything of that kind which had been used. They said the soldiers there had better go back where they came from, which remark was reiteraied by several of the Indians, Major Kranz repiled, in etfect, that they had been sent there, apd intended 10 stay and build houses; that thelr claims for pay must come through their mre and tha: he would seitie with them only that way. In order, however, to show that they came on peaceable d_he ‘offered to give them some- thiug to eat. They replied, after the “rations” had been brought out, that they must be paid for the grass, &c., before night. The Indians talked as if they preferred | colng to War to remaining at peace, “HIRE AT MORRISANIA, Shortly after one o'clock yesterday morning the dwelling of @ German, nained Francis Hopper, in Denman strect, Melrose, Westchester county, caught fire and was destroyed, together with two adjoining houses.
