~—TNDIPRNDENGE DAT. The Celebration of the Nation's Natal Day. The Yrogramme of Observances in the Metropolis and Suburbs. Parades, Reviews, Bxcursions, Ora- tions, Salutes and Pyro- technic Displays. The Theatres, the Public Institu- tions and the Regattas. ‘rae uinety-fourth anniversary of American inde, pendence will be celebratea to-day with the usual time-honored solemnities. The small boy fraternity will, of course, do their noisiest, and our spread @agle orators, as of old, ‘‘astenish the multitude’? ‘with their trite sayings about that wonderful bird of freedom, which is popularly supposed to fy bigher and sbriek jouder on the Fourth than on any other day in the year. New York city, always foremost in everything tnat is patnotic, ‘will celebrate the day in a becoming manner, All ‘the public buildings will be closeg@, and everybody ‘who docs not go out of town will be treated with music in the parks, military parades and flreworks in the squares, all at the expense of the dear public, The indications are that the day will be done honor t© more generally throughout the country than it has been since the war, not because there may be more youngsters to expiode fireworks to-day than there were last year, but be- cause the old times before the war are slowly com- img back again, and the Fourth will navurally, in point of noise and buncombe and general patriot- jam, bea gort of repetition of the Fourth as it was known when Jem Davis hadn't seceded and the fif- teenth amendment was not dreamed of. The pre- Parations for the celebration in the cily have been made on a grand scale. The Fireworks. How the Base Ball Clubs Are to Spend the Fourth. The attractions at the ball flelds to-day are many and interesting, and the thousands who will seek them will do so for a two-fold purpose—to amuse themselves or be amused and escape the horrid din of exploding firecrackers, pistols, guns and cannon which the city walls reverberate from early morn till midnight. very bail fleld in and around the city has been engaged, and the superfluous national en- thusiasm which will be worked off in this way will be greater than in any other line, There 18° no game that ofers to our people an amusement s0 fitting to their tastes as base ball on this natal day. By asiight stretch of the imagt- natton one can perceive in it the elements of a pyro- technic display. The faces of the throng, according to thelr sympathies, are lit up or darkened—some white, some red, some blue—uaccording as the for- tunes of this side or the other sise and fall. And as fortune ever plays a fickle part in these contests, the crowd’s visage 1s constantly changing hue, ‘The ball follows the curved lines of the rocket or goes ricochetting like a hot shell upon the water. The players themselves perform gyrations that a pin- wheel might initiate with honor, while all go in, go off and go out as would so many Roman candles, DISPLAYS TO-DAY. At Brooklyn, Atlantic v8.
