Sarurpay, pirat kit ae ! The downtown early closing movement for Sacur- day afternoons has exiended to the Gold and Stock Exchanges, which were closed promptly at three o’clock this afternoon, im pursuance of resolutions Previously adopted, Amati group of brokers con- Unued dealings on the street and In the Goid alley afierwards; but no transactions of unportince occurred subsequent to the boards, the excessive heat driving many of the leading operators out of the street early in the day. FORKIGN EXCHANGE STROM AND ACTIVE. The foreign exchanges were stronger and active, large sales occurring soon after the departure of the steamers. It seems that the firmness in the price of governments, as compared with gold, hes pre- sented the temptation of a small profit on sales of bonds heid abroad, and hence some of the foreign bankers were seiling five-twenties, intending to hor- row for delivery until the arrival’of the bonis ordered from Europe, and for which they will pay with bills of exchange bought to-day. The sudden export of nearly $600,000 specie by to-lay's steamers aiso shows that the decline in goid drought in a number of mercantile buyers, Who found it safer to c.ver their remittances at the present price of gold than run the risk, remote as it may be, of such an accitent as occurred last: suin- Mer, When the Fisk party put gold to 165, to the great oss of hundreds of our merchants, The result of this activity was an advance of an eighth per cent in sterling. The final quotations were as follows:—Ster- ling, sixty days, commercial, 109 a 109}¢; good to prime bankers’, 109% a 109%; short sight, 110'¢ a 11014; Paris, sixty days, 5.20 a 5.164; short sigitt, 5.1654 & 5.13%; Antwerp, 5.20 a 5.164; Switzerland, 5.20 a 5.1654; Hamburg, 35% & 3634; Amsterdam, 405; 8 40; Frankfort, 40}¢ a 40%; Bremen, 15)y @ 79; Prussian thalers, 707 a 7 GOLD STRONG AND ST2ADY. The gold market has been firmer to-day, although the carliest price was 111, tne lowest since March, The opportunity to cover outstanding speculative gales has been taken advantage of by many who had been “bears” since the turn of the market from 116, while the merchants have also bought largely to remit to Europe. MONEY EASY, The money market was without change, and easy at three to five per cent on call loans. The prevail- ing rate on governments was three per cent and on stocks four. Commercial paper was reported a tule ‘firmer for the longer dates, which are likely to over- lap the interval to the advent of active money tn the fall. THE BANK STATEMBNT. The weekly statement of the associated banks shows a loss in reserve of a million and a half of dollars, including a decrease of avout @ million legal tenders. The deposits have fallen off two and a hai millions, so that the surplus reserve has decreasod less than a million. The banks have increased their Joans about three hundred thousand dollars, It would seem, from the statements of the past few weeks, that the banks have passed the climax of their strength of reserve, and that the slow move- ment which 1 now making of the old grain crop, together with the prospective Gemand for money in connection with the new one, will entail a steady drain of irreguiar and varying proportions upon their resorces until tue-crop movement ceases. ‘The statement compares with its predecessor as ‘fol- lows:— Zune une 35. The stock market was extremely dull. At the opening it was heavy and prices declined. The rally in goid exerted a sympathetic influence and prices recovered and closed steady. Wabash advanced to S57 onthe discovery that the new shares will be re- tained by the company and used as the con- sideration in payment for the contemplated equipment of the Decatur extension. New Jersey Central rose to 1093¢ (from 107%) and closed at 109%. Atlantic Mail declined to 31% Panama sold at 130.
