The Meetings of the Irish tallors were heid to protest tenant ‘overed ,- a thet +y* against this action of the employers, anda strike was resolved upon atonce, Accordingly yesterday afternoon the Irish tailors stopped work, and col- ected in crowds in the streets. Soon afterwards rioting began. The “strikers” attacked the shops of the obnoxious employers, many of which were damaged and some sacked. The police charged the rioters repeatedly, and after a vigourous use of their clubs succeeded in re- storing order. A number of citizens who volunteered to aid the police were stabbed. So closely contested was the race’ between the Bella and Tiger, full particulars of which were given 10 yesterday's HERALD, that the owners of the latter yacht, hardly satisiied with the result, issued 2 sec- ond challenge, which was manfully accepted. Hibervians at a Picnic-The Rowdies Fight Each Other, Beat the Potive and Rescue a Prison A picnic of the Ancient Order of Hibernians was held at Mount Pleasant Park, Jersey City, yesterday. This organization 1s composed of some of the most respectable and prominent Irishmen in the city, and during the forenvon and part of the afternoon the greatest order prevailed. The Board of Police held a secret session yester- day, all the members being present. By resolution of the Board what is known as the “Ordinance Police Squad’? was organized, the object being w give Mayor Hall a body of picked men to enforve the city ordinance, Twenty men were detailed for this espectal duty. They are to form a part of the Twenty-sixth (City Hall )precinct, and are to make daily reports. Their especial duty 18 to assist the Mayor in enforcing the ordinances, and reports will be made to Supertn- tendent Jourdan and Mayor Hall. Mr. ‘Wallach offered # resolution providing that hereafter three members, instead of five, shall constitute a quorum for all standing committees. He explained the necessity for such s change, stating that It was impossible fo get five members of any of the com- mittees together during the warm weather. He said that the Castle Garden committee had attempted to hoid three mectings recently, but failed each ime because they could not yet the requisite number to make aquorum. There was considerable opposi- ton to this proposition, several of the Commission- ers intimating that they did not consider it exactiy the thing to-allow three members of a committee of eight to transact all the business.
