The great.fire in the Pera district has been fully subdued and something like order reigns again, According to a careful count over seven thousand buildings of all sorts have been destroyed. Many of these were the best in the city, The loss of life has greatly exceeded the estimate made some days ago. ‘The remains of one hundred and fifty buman beings have been discovered thus far, and it is supposed this number representsg about one-half of the actual loss of life. The total losg caused by the fire is computed roughly at twenty-five million pounds sterling. Eng- lish underwriters suffer heavy Losses. The archives of the British Embassay were saved. The Church of the Immaculate Conception was on fire severa | times and is considerably damaged, but the Gobelin tapestry, the gift of the Empress Eugénia, with which the church was decorated, was saved unharmed, Scenes and Panic During the Fire—Frightu ful Loss of Life. At some points whole families were hemmed in by the Mames and perished in full view of the spec- tators, who Were unable to rescue them. The panic among the people was terrible, and Many who might have escaped lost all presence of mind and were unable to save themseives. Others in despair made no erlort to fy and were lost. Some of the Turks, in the spirit of fatalism peculiar to their race and religion, shut themselves up in their burning houses, refused assistance and “met ther fate without a murmur, LOSS OF LIFE. Paris, June 9, 1870, The Empress Eugénie has sent 10,000 francs to Constantinople for the relief of the sufferers by the great fire.
