Tor the past ten days a dense fog has enveloped the Atlan- tic, from Cape Hatteras to Halifax, proving a source of the greatest annoyance and danger to the fleets whose routes of service have called them within such Jatitudes. The scores of vessels bound to New York which within the time referred to have approached the coast, fell in with this, to them, great enemy, and, consequently, were detained to an extent beyond precedent. The officers of steamsh!ps and satlng craft alike bear testimony to this, and say that the fog is the worst they have experienced for yeara, and it is so dense that it settles upon the rigging and drops therefrom like rain. It has caused a partial interruption to the business of this port, inasmuch as a fleet of vessels ready to go to sea have been and are now detained at anchorage off Staten Island and thence to Sandy Hook, awaiting the lifting of the un- welcome visitant before they can depart, as there is also a fleet of iuward bound craft anxious to reach this port, and de- tained outside by the same cause. Fortunately, but one acel- dent has as yet been reported as resulting from this cause, that being of @ slight nature. ‘The schooner Carleton, from Eleuthera, when eight miles from the lightship off Sandy Hook, was run into by an unknown steamship, carrying away her foretopmast and jibboom, besides doing other slightdamage. Last evening the fog penetrated farther in- land, and after shutting out Staten Island and Governor's Island from the river side observers, settled upon the North and East rivers, making navigation by the ferryboats de- cidedly unpleasant to the pilots and dangerous to passengers. At the present writing, however, no accident from the latter source has, fortunately, been reported.
