FINANCIAL AND COMMEROIAL, vil le WALL STRE} SATURDAY, May 88—6 Pu. | ‘The fnancial situation at the close of the week 18 buoyant in answer to the very favorable character of THE BANK STATEMENT, which exhibits a gain of over a million in reserve against an increase of only a million and a half in iabilities. The gold market was unsettled, in sympathy with Mhe fuctuations in the foreign exchange market, and declined from 114% to 11434, the lower quotation being made on the showing of a full decrease of three millions of dollars in the value of the goods imported during the week as compared with the preceding weck. Subsequently there was a reaction on the announcement thai the cotton receipts of the ‘week were only 30,000 ba.es; but the tendency of the market to advance is combated by the opportunity afforded at any slight rise to ship ponds to Europe, where five-twenties have been higher for the past Sew days ana are now quoted at a figure which permits exports from this side with gold at 114% a 115 and exchange at 109%, The disposition of the room is strongly bearish, and the carrying rate toalay averaged aboutene and a half per cent. The ex- pectation is also largely indulged in that the ‘Treasury will not curtail, if ic do not enlarge, the programine of gold sales during the ensuing month, The course of the market is shown in the ‘table:— 10 A.M 1P.M. 10:38 A. M. THE GOVERNMENT PROGRAMME FOR JUN. Much speculation was done to-day with recard to the probable programme of Mr. Boutwell curing next month, As June begins on Wednesday there will be five Wednesdays and five Thursdays in which to conduct his sales of gold and purchases of bonds. Hence the street has drawn the inference that he will sell at least five millions of gold and purchase seven or eight millions of bonds. GOVERNMENTS STRADY AND QUIET. ‘The government list was quiet and, despite the lower quotation for gold, steady, the timpression ex- isting that the government will purchase largely enough next month to counteract tie influence of a ‘weaker gold market, The following were the final street prices:—United States currency sixes, 112% a 113; do, sixes, 1881, registered, 1173¢ a 11734; do. do., coupon, 1175 a 11734; do. five-twentles, registered, May and November, 111% a 111%; do. do., 1862, coupon, do., 112% a 112%; do. da., 1864, do. do., 111% @ 111%; do. do., 1865, do. do., 11134 a 111% do, do., 1865, coupon, January and July, 113% a 114; do. do., 1867, do. do., 11444 @ 11434; do. do., 1868, do. do., 114 a 114%; do. ten-forties, registered, 108 a 10814; do, do., coupon, 108 jg a 103%. MONEY EASY. ‘The money market was easy at three toxour per cent, with exceptions at five. Before the close of banking hours heavy balances were offered at three percent without regard to the class of coliateral. Commercial paper was current at six percent for prime double names. FOREIGN EXCHANGE ‘was heavy in the forenoon at 1097¢ for sixty days and 304g for sight bills, and one leading house reduced ‘the rates to 109% and 11034, at which large amounts of bills in second hands were offered on the street. The market becoming active at the lower figure the house referred to ceased drawing, aud the market closed at the original quotations, STOCKS DULL. ‘The stock market was dull and the transactions at the two boards comprised only a 1ew thousand shares, At the opening prices were heavy and de- clined about a half per cent for the leading railways, but an active speculation started up in Pacific Mail, tue price of which advancing to 43% imparted buoy- ancy and strength to the whole list. Reading and Pitsburg rose to the highest quotation of the season. Boston, Hartford and Erie was weak and broke tu 3X, but subsequently rallied with the general list on the appearance of the bank statement. Burke, daughter of the late Car. tain Alexander, of New Orleans, shows no sigus of wearying in the contest with the Gardner and Gratr families for the possession of the money and bonds of which her father was possessed at the time of his decease. The investigation was resumed yesterday by Surrogate Hutchings. Charles D. Westcott was recalled and testified that for tie three bonds received trom James W. Graft he got $2,322; Giaf’ toid him he did not want “he old folks!’ to kaow it, as they had other bonds, and if they knew he had sold these they would not be likely to let him have more; with regard to moneys patd to Graif he had a memorandum of some items which he had kept, but he had possibly given him other sums; he was not nite clear as to the amount tecelved Yor the bonds; 615 he had paid Mr. Graff in cash; he had paid the rest and more tham'the rest in printing for Mr. Grati; in fact, Graff was indebted still to him some $400; some of the ch: arges against him were long prior to the receipt of the bonds, Mr. Redfield here moved for an order requiring Mr. Westcott to deposit the proceeds of the bonds in @ trust company or give abond for the amount to await the decision of the Court. Mr. Spencer argued that such an order was be- yond the power of the Surrogate under the law, that only giving the authority to take tie property in specie. ee argued for Mr. Westcott to the same eri The Surrogate held that tne bonds having been sold he could not grant the warrant. The circum. stances uuder which the bouds came to his hands were suspicious, but the property was the only thing tq be reached under the statute. The remedy of the petitioner was by suit. John Graf was then called and testified that he first knew of his brother's having these bonds from the published accounts in the papers; in January, 1869, his brother James was just about making a living out of his printing office; none of the Gardners had told him anything about Captain Alexander's bonds, and the first he knew of them was from the public trials; he had not vislied the Gardners very much; he had seen them about twice a year; he had hardly been on visiting terms with them; quite lately he had heard that a bond had been given to his brother Adrian. The matter was then adjourned to Monday at two P.M. EMIGRATION.
