Business on the East river, with its numerous nteamboats ‘and other vessels for the transportation of passengers and freight, deserves like prominence ‘with the North river fleets, already referred to in this colump, Could Fulton, whose first trip by steam upon the Hudson was ridiculed asa silly whim, return, as did Rip Van Win- Kle, to sympathize with living ideas a century after his time, he might point to the grandeur of that practicality which his whim has assumed in fifty or more years, and wreak satis- faction in exulting over the memory of short-sighted contem- poraries, The pulf'of the stenmship or steamboat may now be heard every moment of the day upon the winding waters of the East and North rivers, over which sixty-three years agoasingle curiously fashioned craft feebly demonstrated the practicability of steam navigation, On these rivers the invention of Fulton still does and will maintain its supremacy. ‘On no waters in the world have steamboats become such indispensable adjuncts of commercial trafic as hereabouts, Luxury with safety combine in many of the floating palaces that daily shoot from a scere of piers that encircle the city to make the opportunity of travelling on the water eagerly embraced. Many of the East river fleet are devoted to the transporta- tion of freight alone, but they frequently ran in lines also devoted to carrying passengers. No“new boats have been built for efther service on the river, #0 far as ascertained, and owners, agents and captains, alike with their brethren on the North river, do not anticipate a heavy business gencraliy during the season. The Red, White and Blue tine of barges, piers Nos 4 and 5, run this season to and from Athens eighteon barges the W A Summer, J W Wilson, Saginaw, M Barnes, Hubbard, War- ren, Oregon, Globe, Suydam, Puritan, Columbus, Towa, Hereules, Indiana, Abbott, Nonsuch, Devine Burtis Jr, Six Sisters—employing the five towboats comprising Schuyler’s line, viz:—America, Niagara, Cayuga, Belle, Anna. The transportation of freight by these barges reaches an enor- mous figure, as it controls all that is brought to Athens o the New York Central Railroad. The towboats above named are also engaged in the Alvany towing business, which ia quite extensive. C A Vore is th nt of the barge line. Austin’s line, pier No 5, run a Jarge number of barges, em- ploying four towboats—the Syracuse, Ohio, Austin, and MeDonald—forming a daily line between New York and Al- bany. Freight transportation exclusively. The barges Roberts, Burton, Sands, Haeket, and Baxter leave Coenties slip dally with freight for the New York Central Railroad, which is shipped at the foot of Thirty- second street, North mver. The business done in this wise fe often quite extensive. The Hudson River Transportation Company in former vears employed elght or ten Umrges for the carrying of freight, but these have been disposed of and canal hoats used instead. These are numerous and do | fair business Briggs’ Swiftsure Line have eontro! o: ‘en meamboats—the Comstock, Phillips, Pierrepont, Massey, Utley, Fairchild, Walker, Monitor, Frank, and Fannie—one of which leaves pier No 10 at five o'clock PM daily for Philadelphia. ‘They run through the Delaware and Raritan canal. ‘The propellers Acushnet, and Wamsutta, of the New Bod- ford and New York Steam Propeller Company, form a pas- songer and freight line to Now Bedford, running on Wednes- day and Saturday of each week, leaving pier No 13. ‘The Express Steamboat Company, possessing seven ateam- boate—the Aan Eliza, A © Stimers, Chester, Beverly, Bristol, Mayflower, and © Biddle—form 2s daily line via Delaware and Raritan canal to Philadelphia, leaving pler No 15 at four o'clock PM.
