FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, | & emeeraian ane WALL STREET, } Sunpay, May 16, 1870, TAR WERK IN WALL STREET. 7 The salient feature of the street during the week ‘Was tiie sudden culmination of the bull movement in several of the leading speculative shares, From re- liable indications it has since been made manifest that the principal operators were not harmonious in this realization of the profts derived’ from the en- hanced prices of stocks as compared with the figures at whioh the movement started, and hence we find an irregular speculation toward the close ofthe week, But that the movement for realiza- ion has commenced in all the speculative shares, and ts only temporarily delayed in order that it may ‘be more effectually carried out for those which have Qot yet participated in it, is the impression con- veyed to any one who impartially studied the situation om Saturday. The specu- lative’ combinations are generally narmo- nious when in distress. Like politicians, they quarrel only when the spoils are at hand. In essay- ing the spring campaign for a rise in stocks they were very friendly in their relations to each other. Only one set of operators attacked them on the “bear” side, the onset being confined to the North- weat shares, but even they turned round with She general current and became “bulls.” Now that the cliques have succeeded in advanc- ing prices ten to twenty per cent mutual distrust and fear pervade their councils, They are suspicious of each other and dread treachery in the temptation to make good tne fruits of the campaign. Eaoh clique 1s afraid of belng left the last to sell out. The Lake Shore party got out of the market very quietly. Then followed the Ohio and Missis- sippi combination—the unloading 1m the latter stock being an instance in poimt of the fear of treaohery—aond realization has taken place in other shares, but not to so great an extent, the market having been too ‘soft’? tore. celve large sales. The Central clique were afraid of outside demoralization among the public and threw themselves into the breach when the “break” of ‘Thursday occurred. The effect of the events of the week has been to render the market dull and to put all fresh operations rather on the “bearish” side of speculation. ‘The gold market was duli until taken hold of by a clique for an upward turn this summer, their plans being based upon the falling off in the cotton re- ceipts for the balance of tne season. They are ma- nipulating the market for a short interest as a foun- dation for the movement, and have already tempted large speculative sales, the feeling being confidently entertained that when we are so near specie pay- ments the government will not suffer any sharp ad- vance in gold, particularly as the Treasury is so abundantly supplied with facilities for frustrating ‘the design. The government market was lower in its general movement, prices having fallen off with the re- Versed course of speculation at the Stock Exchange. ‘The money market was easy at the close at three to five per cent, Prime commerciai paper was in re- quest at six to seven percent discount. Foreign exchange closed strong on the basis of 1093¢ for prime bankers’ sixty day and 1103; for sight sterling bills. THE BANK STATEMENT. ‘The weekly statement of the associated banks was again favorable. The gain in the surplus over the legal reserve is about a million and a half of dollars, due'to an increase of nearly three millions in legal tenders and specle combined, against an increase of only five millions in deposits. ‘The last two state- Menta, with the differences in detail, are shown as follows:— Loans. nib aiein $278, meee rt Sarr es z INC. $3,185,843, oP a sostooo *'Sed6s008 Ine.” "aoe oot ecle . jation.. 83,444,641 33,2, S598 Dee. 160,661 vse 217, 362,218 222,442,319 Inc. 5,080,101" Legal tend’s. 66,108,922 57,947,006.
