A New Method of Reform for Young Crimi- nale-How They Can Become Serviceable to Their Country—An Incorrigible Young Thiet. For several months past there has been a discus. sion among .several public bodies in New Jersey whether some cheaper and at the same time more effectual provisions can be made for juvenile offenders than those furnished in the State Reform School, the admission to which is attended with some difficulty at present, owing to the crowded state of the institution. The Board of Chosen Freeholders of Hudson county have struck on @ system which is likely to answer the purpose fully as well as the reform school, and be attended with less expense. ‘they appointed a com- mittee to inquire into the subject, and when the Board met yesterday for the last time—their term of office having expired—at the Hudson City Court no the committee reported that they had visited the schoolship at ‘Brooklyn, abd made numerous in- quiries in other quarters. tid arrived at the con- clusion that the system good one oe oak , that a suitable vessel can be penne eine tart $30, 1 hat the expenditure for fifty for the first pon 2 feo be about $60,000 and itterwards about $10,000 ~ The Teport was referred to the new Board of Free- no, ‘ders, and there is little doubt that it will be ace |] |. Allen 4s a]so in as Ane condition as possible and will weigh about 180 pounds—about twenty pounde more than Mace, Notwithstanding this discrepancy of weight andthe difference between the ages of the men Mace is still the favorite at 100 to 70. Fifty police oMficers have been detailed by the Chief of Police to presérve order and protect the apecta- tors from the violence of the rowdy-element which will be present at the Metairie Course to-morrow. Pool Selling on the Fight—Mace the Fa- vorite. | Last night there was @ small gathering at Riley’s for the Mace and Allen fight, which comes off to- day. Infact it was im most’ respects ‘a failure, as ttle interest seemed to be shown. On the first pool Mace was chosen at $30 and Allen went to $24. Several pools were sold at Mace $24 to Allen $15, Outside bets were more plentiful and seemed to create more interest. The largest one was $125 to $75. Bets of to $35 were freely offered but none taken up. len’s friends seemed to expect fully one-half before they cared to wager money. The pool seller seemed most anxious to urge betth va in spite of well-meant endeavors he could not life into it. Generally there seemed to be tittle doubt as to Mace’s winning, though the fact that Allen 1s a younger man by ten years than his opponent was used 8-8 reason for his possible triumph. PERILS OF PRIZE FIGHTING IN CRUSETTS. mAssa- Arrest of George Seddons in St. Louis by Bostoa Authorities for Indulging in a Prize Fight Over Two Years Ago—His Arrival in Massachusetts. Boston, May 9, 1870, The professional pugilists have begun to find out, much to their sorrow, that Massachusetts is an in- secure place for them to indulge in thetr favorite and disreputabie pastime. Ned 0’ Baldwin, the Irish Giant, 1s already serving a sentence in the Salem jail for entering the ring with Joe Wormald, and the lat- ter has his liberty only so long as he keeps his whereabouts @ secret. Over two years ago George Seddons, a well known pugilist of this city and New. York, engaged in a mill with Tom Kelly on “Smutty Nose Island,” one of the numerous isles off Ports. mouth (N, H.) harbor, ana he was afterwards con- victed of leaving Massachusetts to engage in a prize fight, but pending the sentence of the court he stepped out on his bondsman. He went first to Canada and distinguished himself by punishing a Montreal pugiitst, after which he went to Iilinole and en, in a fight with @ fellow named Lafferty, whom he also whipped. A subsequent match was then made between them, and Seddons went into anne at@ place known as ‘‘Wash House,” some two miles outside of St. Louis, and where Tom Allen is training for the coming encounter with Jem Mace. His whereabouts having been ascertained, detective Stone, of the State police, was provided ‘with a Gov- ernor’s requisition and sent to arrest him. The ofiver had no age in finding Seddons, and little in arresting him. He was brought to Boston on Sat- uiday, and to-morrow he will probably be brought up for sentence. First Play on the St. George’s Grounds— Splendid Innings ot Young Carpenter. With a fine day and a good wicket there is gen- eratly no obstacle to a good game of cricket, which idea was fully realized yesterday ou the St. George’s Ground at Hudson City. The match was between the married and single of the club, both sides pihy- ing strong as regards science, but both being numeri- cally weak. ‘The single men were the first to take the bat, opposed by the bowling of the two club pro- fessionals, Norley and Doyle. The innings footed up to 114, of which Carpenter got the top score of 58, made by some really fine play. His ‘‘cuts” and “on drives” were fine indeed, showing that his father’s tuition had not been thrown away. Against such bowling as Norley’s a score like this is no mean feat to accomplish, ‘0 others obtained double figures, Mr. Cooper’s 23 being Lect well got, ‘some of his hits being greatiy applaud In his innings Norley’s bowling was vey effective, taking five wickets, The Benedicks, although playing a strong team, did not manage to reach their opponents’ score, the total of their innings amounting to seventy-one only. Of this number the two profes- sionals got more than half, Norley de’ending his wicket opstinate.y till he succumbed to a “ripper? fom Carpenter. J., what St. Alban’s is to New York—the grand local Mecca of High Churchmen and sight-seers. Yesterday after- noon, between five and six o’clock, @ fashionable wedding came off at the former edifice, and was a de- cided novelty in Jersey weddings. The cards of invitation set forth that the marriage of “Mr. and Mrs. A. Courtland Munn, née Mary Sandford” would take place, and long before the arrival of the bridal party the church was crowded to over- flowimg whh tashionably attired ladies and a very few gentlemen, Soon after the appomnted hour there emerged from the vestry room to the north of the chancel the clergy and choristers, in full vestments and white robes, These, numbering about filteen or sixteen, formed a procession, and, preceded by a surpliced boy, bearing on high a gilt cross, marched to the entrance and awaited tne coming of the bride and groom and attendauts. Arrived, they proceeded to the altar, and the ceremony of marital consolida- ton was carried out 1n accordance with the Church ritual. Rev. Dr. J. S. B. Hodges officiated. The bride, a splendid looking brunette, was magnifi- cently attired in white satin en tram. She was auended by five bridesmaids, as follows:—Miss Saidee yon, Miss Abbic Corey, Miss Emma Possmore, and. a Misses Emma and’ Josie Stucky, During the ceremony the fashionably attired females the assemblage manifested a disgraceful anxiety to see everything by climbing on the seats and tops of the pews.
