NEW YORK HERALD, SUNDAY, THE CRYSTAL PALACE. amusements of the People—A Sydenham Palace for Now York—What is Pro- Posed to Do and How to Do It— Intere:ting Particulars. It is no new thing to say that people must have amusement. A probtem most diMeult of solution, frequently presented to despotic rulers in the States of Europe, 1s, how to afford rational amu ement to the middie and jower classes at a cheap rite, Which, while being harmless in its character, will serve to elevate the standard of popular taste and thereby linprove tue people. Our ¢ tizens resent such gov- ernmental interference ; but as it Is a cha’ acteristic of men prejudiced against a ays em Lo reject any- thiny, good as well as evil, connected therewith, the many excellent pomts m the local governments of Europea i countries are altogether discarded by us. We are making rapid strides in advance, however, and are beginning to undersrand that every mog not purely native in its origin 15 net Becessarily un- Worthy of iiniiation, The people will seek amusement, and from the bumunitanian endeavor to properly guide tis uni- versal desire come our Academies of Design, our Young ,Men’s Christian Associations and our Park. It is not easy tu estimate the good which hus been done by tie last, or by the establishment of such meritorious institutions as the Sydennar Palace or tie Kensington Gardens toa gre t cry like London. How many young men have speat Ulere the siniitugs and toe hours they miagat ciher wise have given to wine and lewd women’ How Many young womei have fount, i tue eutertam- ments there obtaiwed, that relaxation and sumulus, the physical and mental needs of which might oiler: wise have sent them to the bady Louis Napoleon keeps the Tuileries by giving the poopio five theatres; the English government has mate no more effective provision for the prevention of crime aud the preservation of public order than by is pu. chases for the Kensingtoa Museum. THE BUYDENHAM PALACE was bu'it in 1853-4 at great cost. it is located at Norwood, accessible by raii trom London bridge every hour, .n tfteen minutes’ tha. Excursion Uckets are issued, including adimission io the Pa ace, for two siutings and six pence aud two shillings, for first and second classes respectively. The build- ing 1s constructed mataly of glass and iroa, and when built was about 1,200 feet long by 700 w.de. Surrounding it are exteusive grounds, beautifully laid out, with waiks, groves, streams, fountains and wil those useful ormameatations which hive proved wo satisfactory In our own Park, Tha bu DEO ig and iis contents are worthy long and special study. is various departments are con- siructed and filled with a view to educa- tion as well as entertainment. Tius the Egyptian, the Grecian, the Roman, the Italian, the German, the Assyrian and the Byzantine courts not only cou- tain origina's or copies of the most notable statuary emanating from those countries, but the are.it ture employed 10 their construction ts strictly ac: cording to the several national styles. Museums, conservatories, galleries and refreshinent saloons abound, and not only one day, but many, may be pleasantly and profitably spent witulu the palace walls. A corresponient, Who writes of a visit to this ghanmuing Spot, SAys;— he day of dur visit wis the occasion of the For- Tesier’s Fete, aud we atterwards warncd from the Papers that no less than 64,000 visitors were at tie Dalace that day, Except in a few of the departinenis the buliding Was not uncoutorianly crowded, and over the grouuds one coud find many walks 2s uict asa Canad.an'woodand, The 4,000 poopi¢ UCN, Cricseung, running, racing With veloel- Pease and playing all the outdoor games inveuted, Yet lueve Was Toomn it the shaded Walks and groves for secinsion and rest, where not even the voices of the crowd coud reach you, and only an occastonat gust of wind, Waiting scvains ivom some enrhusiastic brass band, waiting strains from some enthusiastic brass baud, remimded you of the Immeuse Wrong w.thiu the enclosure. ‘There is too muci to be seen at tie Sydeuham Crystal Palace. One’s limbs and eyes aré weary before one-hall 1s seen, and we leave With 2 contused idea of a mammoth crystal balding, and statuary and plants from ail climes, and singiug buds and groves as beautiful as nature's own, and muniature 8 and terraces and flowers, and crowds of hwnan faces, a very Babel of sights and sounds. Th are but hints of what the Suydenham Palace embraces, Under its broad spreading roof concerts have been heid at which 3,000 children dave sung to an audience of 30,000 people. Lastrn- Mental concerts Lave vbeca given, anniversary diu- mers and meetings held, circuses have drawn by their neyer-fading fascinations thousagds of chil- dien with lier parents, and, in short, it has been to Lonuon # grand and unexceptionable place of re- fined amusement, THE PARK AS A PLACE OF RESORT. Sometuing of this sori we want in New York, Wat ave we, except the Park, for generai aimuse- ment aad recreation’ ‘theatres, ike churches, are tor menial instruction and entertamment: but uney are no places for young cuildren, hor for the Labor. ing Classes, WhO Canuol afford the necessary expen- dituie. Take away the Park and what remains? Absolutely iotning that can be recommended as a pace of popuiar resort. But the Park, beautiful aia tastesuiasit is, is Dot complete, As # play- ground, a dri a& promenade und a place for outoor concerts, it is all that can be desired, pans gives New York what ihe Suyders ad gronnds give to Loudon, More ever, for jour months m the year the Park ts brown aud sere and tie beak winds sweep the Man and the ‘Terrace, WHAT WH NKED IN NEW YORK. We need for New York an institution where a mugiificent caifice, In the midst of elegantsurround- dns, Sha combine Within ttoelf all forms of reasona- be entertainment and give a perpetual stimutus to it snouid have galleries of the nd statuary; # museum of alt that is Tare Aha Curious iM art, sclence and manutuc- St a bureau Where May be placed on exhibition aud sale every pew invention which Brother Jona- than or any of his Iriends from over the sea may de- vise; a inechanical workshop, where every variety of the appucation of steam, eectricity or oiher mo- tive power may ve seen in constant practical illus- wation; agricultural and horucultural aepartments, where all attainable products of our own or other ries may be Kept on exhibition, with persons we Who can intelligently auswer all the mul dasious quesions which visitors, espectaiy from tne ratal distiets, Wl naturally ask; a grand hall Jor instramente: concerts (these to be given ev day when the hall is not otherwise occupie operatic vccusions, Monster Musical jubiiecs or draiuatic annive sor commenorative periorm- ances und any great public gathewngs; suialier dais Where agriculture and sclence could be made popular by a jude: Jecuon of lectures; the whole to be under managers, Who would de iiberal in arranging the schedtle of prices for ex- hibition or admission SO as To Make It emphatically ihe people’s exchange, In addition to the above where should be @ system of prizes, medals and Aonors, ior Which exhibitors could compete, and last, ‘but by no Means least, We structure should be docated in tae most accessible and salabrious spot to be obtained, even if it had to be largely paid tor, THR PROPOSED INDUSTRIAL PALACE. Can suci & broad and comprehensible plan be earned out here? or, rather, is it likely to ber for anything can be done here which kas been or can be done elsewhere, ft 18 satisfactory to know that ahe project 15 not oniy feasible, but provable, A charter has been granied by the Legisiature which conters suiicient power upon an “industrial Oom- pany” to enabie them to carry out sometiung sucha programme a3 We have here sketcoed, The charter is for fity years, “and thereafter, uniess repealed,’? and the capital 18 $7,000,000. It remains to be seen wuetier (he iucorporators have any adeqate idea of what is due from them to tie city of New York (and AO! tus city alone, but the whole country, of which tunis is the metropolis) in return for such ample authority, These incoporators are to hold their first elecuon of officers in a few days. Will they be wise enough to choose men of oroud views, of quick apprebension of the public needs, a strct integrity and of skillul energy, who will be vigorous im executing the pro- visions of their charter? There has never been @ moce splendid opportuntty for any body of men to make thetuselves beueluctors of the city than this. Not even the conception and execution of the #ark plan was more promising of beneficial re- stuls, provided always that the men in charge have tue experience, the tact and the nerve to improve uhe opportunity, As to the fnanctal success of any such besser an this city Chere can be no quest on, No people spend mouvy move ireely for what is really good ihan our own. AS We exceed even the Parisians thewselves m our expenditure for eircap and hold no tighter io adolac than the A ae do to a: shilling, we can make of the Industrial Exnibition a more bril- iiant Gnancial success than even the Worid’s Fair of idl, or the Paris Exhibition of 1867, This part of the question we propose to treat more at length at at another time, Having been, as usual, the tirst newspaper to give to the public the text of the charter, and now the first to show New Yorkers how they may surpass the attractions of the great cities of the Old Worid, the H&RALD will Keep its readers aivised of the progress of this great enterprise, and show our business men how their interest hes in urging it to saccessiul fraivon, "HAVAL, INTELLIGENCE. The earlier tian actions of the day at the Stock Exchange were on a very large seale, and the deal- ings in Lake shore continued exeited, the price ad- Vaneing to 101g. Here ib became evident that ihe stock was without the support of the cliques, and it deciined agam to 1003¢, at which 1t was heavy when the sr et market left oi this evening. The early en- thusiasim was due w a loreknowledge of the bank statement. After the actual publication of the exhibit prices dcolined, tae eligues in Lake Shore having sold on the buoyancy produced by its expected very javorabie ‘eatures. The rest of the market reacted with Lake Suore and y.elded @ quarter (to one per cent ivem the highest prices, the market at c.osing giving the impiession that most of the cliques are se. king to realize, and that next week will wituess a@ general realization on thew part, There will be many justances where the oMques, who are strongly entrenched on some stocks, Will doubtless take ad- Yauiage of tue chance w buy all the “shorv” stock that is offered in the forthcoming “break” 10 Lake Sior.
