THE OLD TONTINE SOCIETY. A Grand Old Knickerbocker Insti- tution Passing Away. Elght Lives Left Out of Two Hundred and Three—Another Death Dissolves the Fraternity—A Provident Constitu- tion—A Band of Octogena- rians — Reminiscences of the Coffee House. 1’ AMong the most remarkable of the societies estab- \ Mahed here tn the latter part of the last century was the Tontine Association, founded in 1790 and Incor- }Porated in 1794 by & company of merchants for the Purpose of providing & ceutre for tue mercantile |-community, By the plan of this association each Yghareholder selected a nominee, during whose life ‘he was to receive his equal proportion of the net pro- eeds of the establishment, but upon whose death jihis interest reverted to the owners of the surviving jMominces. The origmal shares were assigned and (held as personal estate, and the whole property was (Vested in five trustees, who were to hold the property ‘Until the number of the surviving nominees was re- “duced to seven, whea the whole was to be divided ‘among tho fortunate seven shareholders depending “wpen them, Under these regulations two hundred nd three shares were subscribed for at $200 each; and witi, this sum the assoclatiun purchased a lot of “ground, 100 feet square, on the corner of Wall and ‘Water streets, and in 1792 commenced the erection “of the Tontine Coflee House, to which, upon its com- “pletion in 1794, the Merchants’ Exchange was re- “moved from the dilapidated old building in the cen- tre of Broad, below Pearl street, where it had been Jocated since the Revolution. After the erection of athe new Excvange in Wali street, in 1825, the bulid- ‘Ang was Ict for various purposes; then in May, 1855, ‘was cewolished, to make room tor the present Ton- Wine building. ‘The original cost of the Tontine Cof- Yeo House was $42,787. The average rent up to 1823, Yuclusive, was $3,500 per year, Making an interest of nearly eight and two-thirds per cent per annum for cach share. A NINTH NOMINEB SOMEWHERE UNKNOWN. Old Knickerbockers who take an interest in the Ristory and all that concerns the Tontine Society ®ay tnat the foregoing tabie of names, which leaves It to be seen that but eight members survive, leaves , Dut one old lady, named Anna Bella Edgar, daugh- ter of William and Isabella Eagar, born March 6, 1785, and consequently in her eighty-sixth year. The ‘whereabouts of the old lady no one appears able to tell, while no positive evidence is to be found whether she bas been gathered to her fathers or not. Where are those, however, who after this notice will peek to find if the old lady is sleeping the sleep that knows no waking, or enjoying a very green old age, ‘with all her faculties unimpaired. Her father was erchant of coustderable means, and lived in a ouse Of no ordinary pretensions in his day at the Bouth side of Bowling Green. If she revisit the | ape of the moon at this the eleventh hour me expectant folks will feel a little put out. She year of our Lo: ‘THE CONS’ ‘UTION IN A NUTAHELL. Upon the death of the nominee the subscriber's interest eased, and this interest became thereby merged in the owners of the surviving nominees. The original shares wore assignable and held as personal estate, and the whole pro- iy was vosted in five trustees, who were to be continued the manner pointed out in the above constitution, and ‘who wore to hold the same until the number of such norai- Geos were reduced to seven, when the holders of the slares contingent upon these surviving nominees became entitied to @ conveyance in tec by the truntees of the entire premises, fo be equally divided between them. ‘The nominee himself did not, ag such, have an interest in fhe association, for each subscriber in naming eome per- fon—genoraily & child—looked to such as had the promise of yas Dongth of day WHAT TONTINE MEANS. The pian of the association originated from the Wcheme of Lorenzo Tonti, & Neapolitan, who intro- juced @ similar scheme into France in 1653, during ithe reign of Louis XIV., whence the word Tontine Came to designate a loan advauced by & number of NEW YORK HERALD, SUNDAY, APRIL 24, 1870.—QUADRUPLE SHEET. associated capitallsta for Ife anouities, with the beueflt of survivorahty. There is, however @ dis- tinction between the present piau and the sonewe of ‘Tonu, His intent Was the ostablisuwent of a com- pany who shoul each contribute a like amount of capital to be loaned to 4 responsibie party @t & ceriaim rate Of interest, which was to be divuled equally between the members of the same ase, but where there Was a diversity of age the elder re- ceived more and tae younger less, But im the plaa Of this Loutine Assocation tue owners of the seven surviving shares, upou a like number of lives, take the whole property in equal proportion to their surviving nominees, and as in this cave 195 of the nominees ara now dead wno represented corres- ponding iuteresis upon their selection by dierent Subscribers, tue romuning shares are NOW respoc- tively represented by depending upon eight lives, FAREWELL TO COPPER, The constitution bears date 4th of June, 1794, but the noimluations by the supseribers were not whoily completed unul March, 1795. Tae association tu their preambie named the building the Tontine Coffee House, and it Was thereby directed to be kept and used a8 a coffee house; but on the opening of the Exchange a litle higher up in Wall street, tue in- terests of the sharenolders demanding a change in this special appropriation, they applied to the Court of Chancery for poxmission to let the premises tor general purposes and by its decree of 18.4 the re- strictions were removed. Subsequeatly doubts having arisen respecting the validity of che trusts under which the trusteas took and held the property, 12 consequence of the revised statutes on the subject, the Legisiature tn 1843 passed an act confirming the same and altered the name to the ‘ioutiue Building and directed that the manage- ment of the aifairs of the concern be by ‘the com- mittee of the Lontine Building,” who receive besides their other duties the income of the establishment and divide the net proceeds on the second Tuesday im each month of May among the owners of the hares depending on the nominees alive on the pre- vious first day of the same mouth. KNICKERBOCKER LONGEVITY. This association on the 4th of June next, if one of the nominees does not expire in the meantime, will have existed seventy-six yeu. In oxamining the statistics in reference to the suc- ceasive diminution of shares by death the interesting fact 18 disciosed that the lapse of shares from year \o year ig in proportion, with sligQt variation, to ta relative number of both maies aud females. In 1 fifty-one of the Nominees were still living—a tact which, considering tue lapse of tine from the estab- lishment of the society, was admitted by compliers of annuity tavies wo ve very unusual, if not unprece- dented. But it should be recollected that the nomt- nees originally selected were children of parents in easy Circumstauces, and that these were not in gen- erai subjected to Lhe exposure and privations inct- dent to the masses, the average of whose lives forms the basis of the usual calculations on this subject. FKOM YOUTH TO AGE. At the date of the constitution in 1794 the oldest of the nominees was Gilbert Saitonstall, of the city of New York, merchant, who Wook one share aud risked his interest in ls own life at the age of forty-five. ‘The youngest of the nominees was David Augustus Clarkson, son of Thomas Streatileld Clarkson, mer- chant, of New York. STARTLING PREDICTION. A calculation made by Mr. De Peyster in 1839 of the probable existence of ninety-three nominees then In being, based upon the different tabular pre- cedents recognized here and in mneiane as authori- tative, led him totbe conclusion that this number would in or about 1874 be reduced to seven. This peaesn wouid seem to be in @ fair way of realiza- on. THE OLDEN GOLDEN AGE. ‘There are few whose age links them to the olden time when the Tontine Colee House was the chief centre of the commerctal interests, who cannot re- call scenes witain its walls “the like whereof we ne’er shall see again.”” A pablic meeting convened within its walls sent forth @ decision whica was almost uplversally respected. Asa single instance of this, forty years back, when the habit of distribu. ung expensive scarié to bearers and others at or- dinary funerals was 80 prevalent that many poor lamies were sorely pinched to provide this necessary mark of seeped: for @ departed relative, some benevolent mudividuals, geeing the evil infu - ence of such a fashion, called a meeting at the Coffee House, when nearly two hundred of those whose weight of character gave force to their decisions signed @ pledge to abstain from the custom of dis- triouting scaris except to the attendant ministers and physicians This was the deatnknell of the op- pressive fashion. In matters of more vital moment, when great public interests were at stake, a voice has gone out from tne said Coffee House which, like an echo tn alter years from Castle Garden. has been heard througnout tho Jengia and breadth of the land. Some of ane nobiest charities of tne world received their ), (4 Contributions beneath its nal- lowed roof. in only find a parallel In M: or ste London coffee houses, The gallants of the period resorted there and talked of Jove and happiness over their tankards of beer or gobjets of sherry. Men now living remember, with an enthusiastic feeling of recollection the whiskey puuches that were brewed at the Tonune. Notning like them reaches any man’s palate nowadays. Those’ who delight m reverting to this especial feature of tue ola Coffee House have snow-white bairs and full round scores ot years io show, to back up their hearty praive of these meliow-flavored punches of tne olden time, that did nobody any barm and never ralsed arow. It wada day of great excilement on the sanded floor of the Tontine, seventy odd years ago, when news was brought up from the lower bay tnat an English and French frigate were engaged in bloody coufict off Sandy Hook. Many a fervent prayer went up that the Galilc frigate would win tue light and beat the Britisher badly. Of course bettin; was big among the sporting men of the time, an many @ tankard of nut-brown ale disappeared in the excitement of the hour; 2 ‘ho originated the scheme and those aays left to their succes- ler legacy than the old Coffee House—a name Mr integrity and, probably, an ex- ample of industr¥, liberality and promise-keeping— which*cannot be too highly valued nor too warmly commended, WHERE THE TONTINE TREASURERS WILL GO. Those who are expected to secure the greater art of the property when the division comes are ir. Frederick De Peyster and Mr, Wiliam H. Aspin- wall. Sbares were bought by these gentiemea from tume to time from those of the association Who cared to dispose of them, and the result is a large accumu- lation, More especially 1 the nands of Mr. Do Pey- er. ‘The lot owned by the society 18 worth $260,000. If the jease of the fine aud expensive building does not expire before the society becomes delunct of course tue present Tontine block falls in as the property of the association. The interest 1a this regara 1s of quite an exciting Kind. ‘ihe mem- bers are wonderfuily tenacious of life and seem bent on holding fast to that which they have a little wile longer. Mr. sloratio G. Stevens, who has passed the age of ninety-three, though notin the enjoyment of all his mental faculties, preserves his physical bealth hla well, May they all live long and die appy- sors, howe’ CHESS MATTERS.
